ANNUAL SHAKESPEARE INTENSIVE
The Lost StudioThis 2 week workshop meets Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., the second and third weeks of August. The class includes daily work on understanding the structure of Shakespeare's writing. Within the text, we find everything we need when we learn how to look for it. His content, language, use of prose or verse, poetry, rhythm, meter, and imagery reveal everything. He instructs us as to character, motivation, circumstances, actions, where we've been, where we are, where we're going, and why. We will learn scansion, meter, what the rules are, and when Shakespeare instructs us to break them. We will do vocal work with exercises from the world's leading teachers to help free the voice. There will be extensive movement work to free and center the body, unlocking tension and physical blocks, allowing for full expression, so necessary in the use of heightened text. The class finishes with a staged performance for an invited audience the evening of the last day. This class is crucial for actors, and enormously stimulating for writers, directors, and anyone with an appetite for Shakespeare.
