My roommate became a reader on WeAudition to primarily learn and practice and I also had a stint on the platform but couldn't stand not being paid for my time. I understand actors are some of the poorest people so tips aren't expected but if someone is meeting with you and going over multiple scenes for at least 30 min and they don't charge a fee, please tip or at the very least leave a good review. I have worked with people for at least 30 minutes and they did not even have the decency to leave a review. smh. Also, we can find you online, if you're doing relatively well and you don't leave a tip that is messed up. Do not give unsolicited advice if you are a reader. Only give advice if asked. Some people rant on and on and give a 10-minute speech about their training background and I will never use them again. If I'm paying you for time, I want to spend them on my scene. Some free readers are better than readers who charge a lot. Cost doesn't necessarily mean a great reader. If reviews give specific details instead of simple feedback that person is probably a good choice for your tape. WeAudition also provided a telescopic look into the inequality of this business. The three big ones: 1. Some of these actors are not good at all and they have great representation. It completely baffles my mind. I know performance quality is based on scenes but some of these people were repeat customers and this business is absolutely not about talent. 2. Depending on the quality of representation you have, sides for the same character look different. The actors who are actually taken seriously by casting with top representation have different sides and the sides are even formatted differently than lines from say, actors access or low-tier reps. I know casting can tell who is repped by who from their sides. Also, submissions seem to be a rolling situation where serious contenders go first and then they will open casting for other people. This is unfair because I also know people who worked in casting and they absolutely do not watch all tapes, that is a lie. 3. People of color still overwhelmingly get roles that require accents and are stereotypes. The business has not changed as much as people believe.
Hi I’m a 19 year old non binary actor. I’ve been given advice that I would be more marketable presenting fem. I don’t mind this. Usually present more Masc on my free time and just get fem for set/ headshots. Anyway to do this I’ve grown out my hair. My hair is about shoulder length now no layers. I used to have an undercut (high top haircut but with super long hair) it’s grown out now and just looks like long hair. I want to get a haircut. of course I’d prefer a shorter one but I don’t want it to affect my book ability any advice?
I see lots of different ones but the ones that stand out to me are normally the happier, warmer stuff as I feel too many actors try to showcase drama but it comes across as same old same old and too grumpy.
I've heard many times that the more an actor tries to consciously access his emotions, the further they will run away, becoming unreachable. I've heard that it's hard for any actor to access their emotions, but I think it's even harder for the more intellectual, cerebral actor (such as myself). And sometimes, emotional preparation (as Meisner called it) is useful. Basically daydreaming to put yourself in an emotional state for the beginning of a scene. But I've heard that emotions cannot be accessed on command, no matter how hard we try. So for daydreaming or Meisner's emotional preparation (which I have not been trained in by the way), should I try to daydream scenarios without expectations of unlocking or feeling an emotion? I tried to daydream today to see if I can get emotional right before practicing Hamlet's first soliloquy in Act 1 scene 3. I tried to imagine that my mother committed suicide, and I kind of started to feel something, but once I focused on breathing normally again (because you know, breathing relaxes you and lets the emotions flow), the feeling and daydream left me. How can I prevent something like this from happening again during daydreaming exercises? So is it true that in order to daydream or go into emotional preparation and find results, we can't go in expecting anything, otherwise we're going to come out empty-handed? Any tips on how to fix these problems or how to emotionally prepare for a monologue or scene or reading?

31 male actor here from UK. I’ve tried so many different approaches over the last year to maybe get more of a response to anything but I’m getting nothing at all. My agent is basically useless so I’ve applied to new ones and not had one meeting, got new headshots, added new material to showreel, tweaked profiles etc but it just seems like no matter what I do I can not get through, not even called in. I don’t have many credits but if that’s what is holding me back then how the hell do I get past this if no one is willing to even see me. Acting is my passion but right now I’m at a loss.

Hi again! I just posted a couple days ago about film vs theater transitioning and the difference in prep/style, and I appreciate everyone's responses. I haven't been doing theater very long but I have noticed that I'm suddenly getting v skittish about receiving direction. It's not that I don't think direction is warranted -- I love having directors who are really willing to get into it with you and your scene partners and explore. But now whenever I get a piece of direction my first thought is "OH, duh. That sounds so obvious. I really should've figured that out on my own already and not needed it spelled out for me." which then turns into "I must be an irredeemably bad actor. wth is wrong with me, am I wasting everyone's time being here?" even tho logically I know that the only way I could really waste time is to get gunshy and stop putting myself out there and being willing to screw up. Does anyone relate? I'm sure there's a right time to be embarrassed about not having gotten something in the first place.....I just dunno when that time is. I feel like if I ever \*did\* end up getting into film I would make myself loco with a mindset like this.
I'm developing a video game in my spare time and couldn't dream of hiring proper VO actors for all of the dialogue since I'm usually broke. I already have a Pro license and a modest setup to do something similar as a DM for my D&D group, but I want to know if anyone here has experience in using something like Voicemod to do dialogue for a multitude of characters for the same project.

Hi all. While i respect actors who do sex/nudity scenes and dont think they should be dehumanized or get any hate/negativity for it, ive decided throughout my acting journey intimate scenes is something i wont be doing. Does anyone have a list or a few actors they can name who don't do intimate and nude scenes in movies and TV shows or who have talked about it openly? This is a decision I've made for myself in the current rise of constantly hearing this "If you want to be successful you have to take your clothes off." nonsense. it's really helpful and empowering to me to see actors who are great success stories who have stuck to their boundaries. Especially since I've turned down auditions here and there( like 2 or 3) that have included these scenes. Thanks!
Hi all! I live in the UK but I am a citizen of a different country, and I'm a working actor. I have supporting roles in three feature films coming out this year, and I've just had an offer from a decent US manager to rep me there. My question is - how much will this actually help me if I don't have a US visa? I did ask this, but the manager has been very laidback about it, and keeps telling me that I should concentrate on getting job offers first and then worry about that later. They seem to think that a big enough offer (for instance on a big streaming show or movie that films in the US and internationally), would merit the production company organising a visa on my behalf. However, I can't see anyone making me an offer without me having a US visa, it just wouldn't be worth their time and money, surely. I wonder if the manager is sweet-talking me, and I'm skeptical that I'm even at a high enough level for that yet. Can any non-US citizen actors weigh in on their experiences with this?
If I'm in the wrong place I apologize in advance I am looking to be pushed into the right direction of some legit/successful casting call sites. I want to get my foot in the door with acting, with little to no experience. Where would you recommend I start? I have briefly looked into Backstage but I never knew how serious it was or not, if that's even the right way to get started in this business. I also live in a small Midwest town which obviously doesn't hold lots of movie auditions or anything of the sort so I never knew how to go about this. I appreciate any positive feedback
19F living in Indiana. Currently taking classes/working outside of class on all things acting at minimum 14-18 hours a week. I’m confident that I am going in the right direction training wise, but not so much when it comes to supporting my acting career. I’m not going to give much detail into my plans on how I will be pursuing my career, as I feel it is irrelevant to the subject matter. Moral of the story, I definitely plan on moving to LA as soon as I have gained reasonable experience in my local market (definitely not even thinking about moving over there till I have at least 10K saved up, still living at home so that helps with savings). Currently working as a barista at $13.55/hr and food service is my only experience. As I have browsed through r/acting, I obviously have come across many side gig horror stories/miracles or “Focus on a ‘real’ career then come back to acting!”. All of this is very overwhelming and I’m just not sure which direction to even look at when it comes to side gigs. I don’t want to be miserable and burnt out, and it’s obviously important that whatever job I have allows for flexibility. It often seems like it’s one or the other but I know there has to be something out there or at least someone who can help me at least begin to figure out where to start. And yes, I’m extremely aware that this is something that I do have to figure out on my own, but I just need some suggestions. Here’s some more info: •Went to a coding boot camp… long story short, it was not for me. •Skills I do NOT have -> Math, skilled labor of any kind, can’t bartend under 21 in IN, currently cannot drive for at least 6 months due to a seizure incident. All the skills I do posses have to do with the arts. I know I have an amazing singing voice and have been told to pursue that professionally, but that’s basically chasing two unpaid dreams, right!? I don’t know. Moral of the story, I absolutely can’t not pursue acting. I’m not going to go into detail of why because who on here cares? All I know is that I’m following my heart and I need advice on how I can be the best actor/moderately happy person I can be, and I understand that whatever job that I chose to support this endeavor will be crucial to both of those. And yes, probably a TLDR but I just feel so lost and I really, REALLY need some ideas.

I've learned a lot about the history of American Acting method in school, from Stanislavsky to Boleslavsky at the American Lab, to Strasberg and the Group Theater, the split and the rise of Adler and Meisner and Uta Hagen, and many others. Do the British Drama Schools teach from a similar lineage? I understand that they generally teach the System, but is there a history to what they teach, and does it come from Stanislavsky's books? Awhile back I established a connection with an indie horror director through social media. Earlier today he sends me a short script, intending for me to play the lead. I read it, and found it pretty damn tasteless. I'd be playing an evil preacher who rapes a girl, stabs her baby to death and eats it. Now, I'm open to dark subject matter and aspire to be a villainous character actor, but the way this thing is written is so juvenile, edgelordy, and cruel for the sake of cruel that I'm pretty turned off by it. Thing is, I'm a massive people pleaser and don't know how to break it to the guy that I'm not interested, especially since I came off so enthusiastic to collaborate initially. I know that I'm probably being too picky for an amateur trying to get my foot in the door. Have any of you had a similar experience?
At the moment in just 17 and in about 6 months time I’ve gone from doing basically nothing to having to work all day everyday to a point I’ve just kinda stopped because it feels to much and now the work has piled up. My family has basically said that I should just deal with it and get used to it because I chose this and they are right but I don’t feel like I can do this because it’s just too much. They don’t seem to understand how I feel about all of this and I’ve tried explaining it to them and how much work this all is but all they says is “get used to it and think about the future” Is this the life of an actor? To not feel as if we do enough and that our best is not enough? I’m very negative about life but simply this is the way things are. Should I feel this way even at 17?
I am a 23 year old actress with a dregree in theatre. I have multiple skills and speak multiple languages. However, I am from Western Europe and the agencies I’m signed up with only work in my country. I know this is a stretch but I trust that as actors, we’ve all been there: there is an upcoming movie based on a book I love with a character that looks like me and I would love to audition for that role. I’m not even thinking about actually getting cast, I just want the chance to audition. The audition process should take place in the next few months. I already know who the casting director is and found them on social media. I am also going to ask my college professors who worked abroad for tips on how to get an agent, but I might as well ask here: what is the best way for me to get an agent who might get me an audition for this role? Hey y’all I’ve been struggling with this for a while. I moved to Seattle two years ago with my boyfriend for a fun venture we would say to only be a few years to experience the Pacific Northwest. I fell in love with acting out here. It’s my dream and what drives me. Our family is from New England - our plan was to move there after Seattle. I’m kind of an all or nothing person who wants to give myself the best opportunités to succeed and from what I’ve heard the best cities would be Toronto, LA, Atlanta, New York, New Orleans etc. My boyfriend wouldn’t feel comfortable there. I also want to be near my family because I value that as well. So we thought Boston area as a compromise. I know Boston is somewhat an artistic place but mostly with theatre:/ so Is it possible? hi!! novice twin actresses here with a decent social media following. we got scouted and casted in a well paying film that’s premiering at Tribeca and we just wrapped the shoot. the executive producers are successful in the industry and came to watch the shoot a few times and introduced themselves to us. overall, it was an amazing experience and we had the opportunity to network with some creatives who have already started to establish their career. we don’t have an agent, reel, resume, headshot etc. should we message the casting director who scouted us first or..? what do you think our next steps should be to use this as a jumping off point? we’re noobs thank you

Hey there! I'm an aspiring young actress in New Zealand, who has never tried out for acting classes or community plays simply due to the fear of not being good enough. This year I'd really love to start trying to get into more projects, and so I'm starting off with looking around at scenebot. (Not for opportunities, but to learn a few things) My only error with scenebot is that no matter what location I put down, it reads as invalid and I can not continue. Does anyone know how to fix this? I'd really love to access more content but I can only do that by completing my profile. Thank you! I guess this doubles as an introduction!
Use this thread to post your headshots for feedback, get info on your age range/type, find good headshot photographers, ask any questions you may have about headshots. If you are posting a DIY headshot for feedback, and not just a snapshot in order to get feedback on your age range/type/etc, it is advised that you do at least some basic research on what actor headshots look like--composition, framing, lighting. You will find a Google Image search for "actor headshots" to be very helpful for this. Non-professional shots are fine for age/typecasting; please keep in mind that one picture is a difficult way to go about this. Video of you moving and speaking would be ideal, but understandably more difficult to post. ​ For what it's worth, the branding workshop at SAG-AFTRA recommends a five-year age range. That's inclusive, so for example 19-23, 25-29, 34-38, etc.
I recently saw a TikTok where an actor was talking about how they talked to their agent about an audition they had not gotten a callback for that they knew they did great in, and really strongly felt like they would be perfect for a role and so they told their agent that, and she got a callback the next day. Is doing this normal or even accepted? I had no idea you could even do that. Is this like considered advocating for yourself or is it like an unspoken thing not to do?

I’m located in Toronto. I was thinking about taking an acting course at university. I’ve searched up a few universities in the city and most courses are 2-4 years. I also got suggestions to do acting classes like The Pro Actors Lab. One of my main question is will university give me better credibility to get hired by an agent? I currently have no experience, I’ve been doing background work for a year and managed to get a acting credit on a movie I did, which got me a Actra membership. I would like to get an principle agent but have no acting experience and can’t really do non-union student films due to already being in Actra. What’s your advice?
Hi everyone. I am registered with CC and have done like 11 shows so far as a background actor. Once on set, a background actor in the union was pretty much getting annoyed that I wasn't working everyday since I am non union. He told me I should be checking the job listings all the time and working way more. I checked the CC website but I can't find any info on any listings. The only place I see any is facebook and it's not a lot everyday. Can someone point me to the place to go to find work because I am used to just waiting for them to text me and email me job offers. I have also only gotten TV work. No movies or commercials. Does CC not cast for those? The guy that got me into CC has been in some movies so not sure why I haven't gotten any movie work. I want to branch out to movies and commercials.
Okay so basically i need some advice. I’m doing a scene from a play called When we were young and unafraid by Sarah Treem. I’m playing a character called Mary Anne and i’m a runaway. The start of my scene calls for me to be crying and cleaning an oven. Even though I feel like I know the character and the circumstances I cannot seem to get to the tears. I’ve been trying to not focus on the outcome and live in the feelings and the moment but I can never get the desired results when I perform the scene in front of my class. I’ve been working on this scene for months and it’s starting to get embarrassing and making me feel like a bad actor. I also don’t want to keep letting my scène partner down. Help me please!!!
Which type of meditation is best for actors? I need to find the best kind of meditation that works. I need to strengthen my concentration (because I have ADD) so I can focus more in the moment and on stage, have a more relaxed and in-tune body (because tension is an actors enemy), and not be so judgmental and critical of myself when things don’t go the way I wish or hoped they would in rehearsal or scene. Which type of meditation sounds like it would fit me and solve these issues?

Is this even necessary? I am a teenager who is trying to build an acting career. I have done theatre for a long time, and have individual classes too. Where I live there are very few casting agencies, and they don't need actors that often. This one agency has an option where you can submit a video of you introducing yourself to them, and you will automatically be part of all of their casting calls. What am I supposed to say in that video, or is it even necessary? I could just always be looking for auditions online, and not upload a video.

Unfortunately, the footage of my previous work is delayed. Probably because of editing idk?) I have used backstage for a few months. I noticed that I’m getting very little work on backstage. I’m starting to feel a bit discouraged because my looks aren’t what directors want. I’m a black woman with a curvy body type that’s 5’4” Any advice on getting auditions? Did backstage work for you? One time, I saw an actress do a scene in an acting class where her character was going through something awful, and later the actress mentioned she could relate because she was going through the same thing. My question is, does this count as acting?
Hello everyone, I'm 26M and french, I've been passionate about being an actor since I'm 12 or so, but I didn't follow this path and now I'm starting to regret it. I didn't want to go to an actor school in France because for the most part they are scam (6000€ per year and class of 50 students with really few stage play). I am now an emmbedded system engineer and I've been recently more and more thinking about quiting to pursue acting professionally. I currently live in France but I've been thinking about moving to New-York, so I'm hoping some of you might now more about it and could help me a little. How much does it cost to go to an acting school in New York ? Is it possible for a french to pursue an acting career in the US ? Or even attend acting classes ? Can i be accepted in an acting school with zero acting experience ?
I can't be friends with them and I cannot date them. As an actor myself, I find that a majority (of course not all) of them are self centered in a way unique to this field. Talking about your projects and being confident in your work is one thing, everybody does that...but thinking you are above everybody else, bragging about yourself, not caring about the lives of others.... I just can't.
I've been attending an acting class where students talk about what they're going through in their personal lives and apply it to the scene. Sometimes, the students reveal some awful things, and the teacher encourages them to use it in the scene, but that's about it. The instructor doesn't check in on how it's affecting the particular student. Is this a normal thing that happens during acting classes? I know there's not a lot the instructors can do besides consoling them for the rest of the class. But then, why encourage them to reveal personal stuff out in the open? EDIT: This is a professional acting workshop for adult actors who want/need help with their craft.
I don't mean to be the millionth person online crowing about "help me help me" with voice acting, so I'll be as concise as I can. I already have a huge slew of amazing resources to learn how to do it, both text and video. But I have a learning disability, It causes me to find teaching myself new and complicated skills completely by myself very difficult to impossible. I'm willing to pay, but all I need is a little help, a little direction from a live person in real time. Just a smidge of sustained feedback or pointers from a real person would make a world of difference for what I am trying to accomplish. It seems every single paid or free online resources is always pre-recorded or just text, leaving people like myself feeling lost with getting started, I feel once I get off the ground and learn what exact directions to go to become an artist I will be fine on my own. (Just in case your wondering, I'm not walking around with some illusion that I'll become a world class voice actor overnight, I just want some help getting going, as far as I'm concerned for right now It's a hobby I'm exploring, but really want to get somewhere with.)
Veteran actors: if you could give your younger self advice that you've learned through your experience as an actor, what would it be?
So I have a lower tier manager and agent right now. Hopefully this year I book more credits so I can submit for bigger rep at the end of the year. I'm hoping to switch managers but keep the agent. I've booked two TV credits, one of which is recurring (costar 3eps). I also have three big budget scale sag feature films I've done, one of which was opposite a two time Oscar winning actress and another the younger sibling of the main protagonist and an important plot point in the movie. I've been getting a lot more pins and avail checks this year and my manager is more of a "throw spaghetti at the wall" type manager. The agent is getting me bigger stuff to read for. I feel like I could really benefit from someone who has stronger connections and could pitch me. I have no guest star credits. However, though I am a common type, I can also play characters using special skills which has helped me carve out another niche and made me valuable to my reps. I know this would be a huge selling point for me. Also my reel is quite diverse in types of characters I've played but they are often short scenes. For those who have a lower tier agent but higher Tier Manager, or vice versa, has this been helpful for you to level up? TL;DR Can I level up keeping one lower rep but switching the other to a higher level rep? What has your experience been?

Hi everyone. I’m an actor who has been working really hard at my craft for over a year, hit the point where all my coaches suggest that I get representation. One issue I have is my hair is receding hard. I currently have thicker, curly hair behind the hairline but it’s noticeable when I have it angled poorly or if it’s windy. I wear my hair similar to hunter doohan in wednesday so it’s not noticeable for the most part. I’m planning to take meds whenever I can but I’m having issues with my medical professional. Honestly it’s ruined my confidence, especially by the idea that I won’t be able to act my age (my range is 16-22). The concept that I won’t be able to play my age at all or attempt any of my dream roles depresses me deeply. I also do BG work and I won’t be able to do most of my regular jobs cuz I won’t look like a high schooler anymore. I already paid for headshots in a month and I’m deciding whether I want to attempt to keep my hair or just buzz it. They’re expensive so I need to stick with my choice for awhile. I’m sorta rambling at this point and would really appreciate any input. This whole situation really has negatively affected me. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you!
I’m trying to pursue a career in acting, however I feel constantly let down. I did a commercial for an international company where I was the main actress and model, but it did not get released. I came runner up in a pageant and I had the media reach out to me to do a press release in January and now it’s March. The press release was meant to be issued today but I got told there was miscommunication and it will be released next week. It seems like everything I do is not being issued or released. Is it me or is it just coincidence? It’s really putting me off pursing this industry because I feel let down.
I’ve done a lot of thinking over the years and really wanted to make sure I’m not pursuing this for the wrong reasons. I grew up in a very abusive family and felt either under a a microscope or invisible 99% of the time, I have always wanted to make Sure I do this regardless if fame is promised or not. I feel like it was always a fight to be admired/acknowledged by my parents and they made me feel I had to get everyone to like me as well. Their narcissism was truly a nightmare and off the charts, and I don’t want to pursue anything for the wrong reasons ie to rebel against them, but because I enjoy the art for what it is. Still some days during auditions I notice the desperate need to be liked and accepted, and I’ve also realized that’s silly because most people aren’t even paying that much attention to us, if anything they’re trying to make it big themselves , everyone is the leading character in their own life and others play more or less background roles.

Greetings everyone. I am new. Yes I know I'm using a throwaway but, it's for the greater good. Considering everything I have done in my career path this year, I have tackling in learning the ropes of a lot about the entertainment industry. I am a video editor (graduated in that field and Film too) but recently I have networked and contacted with not just people in the realm of post-production, but production to even getting a connection to an actor to discuss... well the acting side. This leads into this post today. Now before anyone slams me, I did read the FAQ but this is more introducing myself because my situation like yours is... unique. Well let's begin, why did I start this exploration? Netflix's Wednesday. That's right, I never thought I loved a show so much that it made me multiply my passion tenfold. It's what's really pushed me to explore the possibilities of the industry, not just the editing, but the production, and surprisingly now, here. Some of my favorite shows and movies include Shrek, Degrassi, Miraculous Ladybug, Turning Red, and Hunger Games. I have always admired the work that goes into creating these amazing stories and I would love to be a part of that process. Especially with the world building and character developments. However, there are some challenges that I am facing. I live in a state (privacy reasons I won't name it but DMing me will net you it) with no acting classes, which makes it difficult to gain any experience or training. The closest city for me to attend classes is either NJ or DC, which is quite far from where I am. I heard there is online and virtual classes like InStudio, and that you can get a mentor but how does one do that. Heck, how do you even do that combined with the fact I also do editing and a part time job on the side? In fact... The big thing that makes people turn their heads and this will happen since I am now bringing up, I am Autistic. I know that this might make things more difficult for me, but I am willing to work hard and overcome any obstacles that come my way. Discrimination drives talent away because we are equal to other normal people in society. So why should I stop? People need to know my difference. But despite these challenges, I am still determined to pursue my dreams. My ultimate goal is to work on the Wednesday show, as a huge fan of the fandom, I want to be a part of any role but I am always open to others. Yes I am aware of the one FAQ about being a huge fan of the show but can you blame me? It's only one aspect, acting. I am learning more about various roles, heck even actors did production and editing roles. I also know that I am deadlocked into this goal, but I am open to others! I can be flexible and hopefully make it into Season 3 or 4 if I can. I believe that with hard work and dedication, I can make it happen. I understand that it might take some time to get there, and I am willing to start from the bottom and work my way up. I am excited to be a part of this community and to learn from all of you. If anyone has any advice or tips on how to get started in the industry, I would love to hear them. Thank you for taking the time to read my post. I am interested in becoming an actor and plan on taking some classes, reading some books, and researching to see if I really want to pursue this career in acting. While I was doing some research formal training and classes was necessary to become a good actor, I agree, but I want to ask and try to understand if paying for these expensive classes is worth it. If I take classes online and get the "experience" without spending a lot of money or if I did not move to New York or LA my chances of becoming a successful actor decrease? I understand an actor must be patient, work hard, etc and I am willing to do that if I end up going down that path I just want to have a better understanding and hear what you guys say! Thank You :)
For anyone who's more on the casting side of things or has accepted self tapes from actors, does the timeline of submission matter as long as its within the deadline? Is an actor that submits a self tape 30 min after the listing goes up going to have a better shot than someone who submits 5 min before the deadline? As someone who submits a lot of selftapes, sometimes I can't get to some of them until the day of the deadline and am wondering if the ones I'm submitting last minute are hurting my chances and whether I should start prioritizing the roles I want more to submit sooner.
I’m a sag actor with credits but I’m currently in between agent/managers. I booked an independent feature through a director I have already worked with but I don’t have someone right now to negotiate my contract. My question is: For an on location shoot, if they are bringing me out three days before my shoot date for rehearsal/fitting, for the two days in between rehearsal and shooting that I am not “working” but am on location, do I get a rate besides per diem? Thank you!
