Am I Sabotaging Myself or Do I Have Really Bad Offers?

Am I Sabotaging Myself or Do I Have Really Bad Offers?

Posted on Jun 2nd

I lost most of my contracts due to Covid and have lowered my expectations to apply on things I wouldn’t have been interested before. Once I start to get involve in the project, I see so many red flags and end up quitting. For example, I refused to be part of a film once I learn there were intimate scenes and fight scenes (that are not allowed during covid) and that it was not a professional set so they could have been arrested for filming during covid (confirmed by three different police officers. L) This week, I saw that they were looking for actors for an independent film and they say it’s paid but I have never seen a casting director working like that and the website shows they are amateurs... Am I sabotaging myself and should actually accept those offers since I don’t have anything better? Or should I wait for the right opportunity to come even though I have way less offers due to covid restrictions? Thank you

To the Will of the People: a Les Misérables Radio Drama

Hello guys, gals, and non-binary pals! My friends David, Raye, L, and I have an exciting announcement to make: For the past year or so, we've been working on a Les Misérables radio drama, centered around Les Amis de l'ABC and we are now ready to hold auditions. If you're interested in auditioning, please read all information on this website and follow the instructions: https://www.castingcall.club/projects/to-the-will-of-the-people We are looking to cast for 10 characters and casting is gender-blind. The characters' genders are as they are written in Hugo's novel, but we aren't picky about the gender of the actors. The radio drama is closer to the book than the musical and the first season begins after the July Revolution of 1830, and follows the formation of the society known as Les Amis de l'ABC. At the moment, this is not-for-profit. If that changes, we will pay actors accordingly, but currently none of us expect to make money off this.

I’m helping produce a superhero short fan film. We need a female villian role to be filled. The issue we keep running into is that the actresses we’ve reached out to feel uncomfortable playing a Nazi spy character. We’ve explained the character in the story was forced to be one and has an “emotional” connection to our hero, who is also female. Its ww2 based. This is also a paid gig. $350 rate for a three day shoot. 6hr a day. Local actors only. We submitted a few online ads. Got some similar responses but also a few self tapes but none of them fit the role unfortunately. We left out the “nazi” part out however. For our description, we just explained that the villian has an emotional connection to our hero as I mentioned earlier and that it requires british or german accents. We explained the Nazi angle and what they do afterwards once they reached out to us. We’re considering being more specific with the ad before we either change the gender or just turn them into a soviet union spy or something. It really suprises me how many are so adamant about playing such a role. The character doesn’t even kill anybody. Heck, the actress playing stormfront from the boys is jewish and still had more balls to play a nazi character. Granted, they got paid more, i’ll admit that.

I'm a Disabled person, Autism/dyspraxia/aphasia to be exact. And probably, It has been asked plenty of times. But is it possible to be a voice actor? And if so, An "Overseas" actor (Belgium) to be fit in an all-out English acting scene mainly for Anime and such? Many of my dreams have to become an actor, But my mental capacity has made me feel really worthless, and I love my voice in a strange way and it could be a fit for anime and/or games (Personally) I've been acting sorta for a few years (and with acting is just a weird sketch of a typical anime perve talking about things on youtube) I just really want to know how or if I'm able to be a voice actor or just be a Belgian voice actor for something like pokemon (or they could make it that some anime can be dubbed in dutch but I'm railing off the whole thing) anyways, thank you for the read and I hope there is an answer!

Voice Coaching Stream

Voice Coaching Stream

Posted on Jun 2nd

Hey VO friends. I comment on this sub quite often, and have done an AMA kinda thing in the past. I'm a professional audio engineer/voice director. To make a long story short, I've considered starting a youtube channel of live streamed voice coaching sessions. Could be a whole mish mash of things from a coaching session with someone brand new, giving away my tips and tricks. Some more advanced actors in the booth talking about technique, session etiquette, explaining how a real session might run. Lessons on how to record at home, edit, etc. I don't have the energy involved in shooting and editing a weekly video so I figured live streams might be a fun way to interact with people. Plus you'll be able to watch them after the fact. I'd also love to bring some people from this sub onto the streams if anyone was interested in a free hour of coaching. Anyway I'm just putting feelers to see if anyone would have any interest in watching, and secondly if anyone would like to join me for a free session (if you're cool with an audience!). Anyone with a decent at home setup is welcome! Thanks everyone.

I can’t find any decent monologues and I’m freaking out.

Posted on Jun 1st

I’ve got college auditions coming up (self taped, which is also freaking me out as I have only an iPhone, no tripod, and no decent lighting, but that’s a story for a different time). I have to perform two contrasting monologues (I’m assuming that means comedic and dramatic), both contemporary, and the 60 second time limit must be strictly adhered to. The 60 seconds includes the slate, so I’d have about 45-50 seconds to impress these people. That’s so overwhelming already, and the fact that I can’t find a single decent monologue that can showcase my abilities as an actor that I can cut down to the time limit scares me. The only ones I can find as far as comedic goes aren’t funny and I can’t connect with them, and the dramatic ones are all about divorcing husbands or what have you. I’m a 17 y/o female student, I can’t relate to any of the content I’m finding. I’ve been hunting for a monologue book, but I don’t have one yet so I’m stuck with the terrible results Google gives me. I’ve wanted acceptance into this specific program for so long, and I’m afraid that if I choose bad monologues they won’t even consider me. Plus, I don’t have real headshots. I’ve done student and community theatre for (going on) five years now, so I’ve got the drive and the passion for this kind of thing. I don’t know what’s going to happen if I don’t get through these auditions. Advice? Please leave it!

Hello everybody, A friend of mine (an actor) has just created a group on Discord where we can meet up and practice together as well as finding new people. We can try scripts together, propose ones that you've written and talk about them, improvising and preparing for auditions. Hopefully as time goes by you're gonna find a lot of new people from all walks of life, and you might be able to find the ones that are a good fit to carry on some projects together ( and ultimately a movie, who knows). See you there guys!! Here's the link https://discord.gg/F5zvaqg9

Where can I find good Behind The Scenes videos on VA recording sessions?

Posted on Jun 1st

I'm interested in possibly directing VAs for my own videos in the future, and I like being able to see what that process actually looks like. I *love* this [video of Cherami Leigh recording the Fairy Tail dub at Funimation.](https://youtu.be/-tHwy7lycpI) Most BTS clips are highly edited and basically only show the takes they end up going with. I'd love to see more videos like these where you actually see the actor being directed and adjusting their performance here and there. I also realize dubbing is a slightly different process than recording original dialogue, and that Funimation has to work at a pretty break-neck pace for their simuldubs, so I'd like to see what a more typical recording session looks like.

Question about IMDb's credits

Question about IMDb's credits

Posted on Jun 1st

On IMDb, if an actor does not have (uncredited) next to their "character" does that mean that they did in fact have a speaking role, even if only a minor one? I've seen times where some people will have (uncredited) next to their name, yet other actors with the same role won't have that. Does that mean they did speak as that character? For example, let's say the role is "employee" and several people have "employee (uncredited)" while several others just have "employee." Does that mean they did have a line?

Background: I'm an actress in Toronto who is non-union, but I just shot a principal role for a non-union feature film with distribution in the US. I also just shot an actor role on a TV show produced by a big name director. I assume being on ACTRA makes you a stronger candidate for O1, but is it completely necessary? Other request, are there any Toronto/Canadian lawyers you're familiar with who would do a free consultation on a roadmap to an O1?

I’m wondering if it’s because of the stay at home order, and I’m hoping things will pick up after this week. But have other Toronto actors been getting very few auditions the last little while? I’ve only had 3 auditions since April. I was auditioning quite a bit and booking before then so I’m curious if others have felt a huge drop in auditions lately.

Had my first audition in over a year-and-a-half since covid started, and I absolutely fucked it.

Had my first audition in over a year-and-a-half since covid started, and I absolutely fucked it.

Posted on Jun 1st

It was actually a callback, first time in-person auditioning since the world shut down. And it was literally just reactions, *not even any dialogue.* The second I got in the room with the casting directors and the project’s directors, the nerves RUSHED BACK and I ended up making myself look like a fucking idiot instead of doing a normal job. Yknow. Like a normal person. Idk why I’m posting this. I think I’m just venting. I haven’t been acting *in almost over 2 years* while covid’s been a thing. And I live in Colorado so the scene is fucked anyway, there’s some *shite* that comes through my agents office, mostly commercials and training videos, I just... ugh. In the four years+ I’ve been signed with them, I’ve gotten exactly two jobs that were like *actual acting*. A real story, emotions to feel, goals for each scene, yknow?? But they’re all Air Force training videos that won’t see the light of day. There’s *nothing* here that lets me flex actual acting, which is another reason I’m just in a weird headspace or something, I... I... I... just don’t know. *Fuck.* I can’t believe I screwed that audition up so bad since it was my first opportunity for some decent work in what feels like a very long time, and I know I’m not gonna get it. I need to move to LA but don’t have the money. I have no connections with students to try and get into those films, I just... idk. Am I even a good actor? Should I be doing this? Cause I love doing it, but that was some absolute dogshit I just did in that room. *I’m pissed off and bitter and all I wanna do is act and make stories, and I can’t even do that right apparently.* Anyway, sorry for the long post. Just needed to get that out there.

Background Acting Woes

Background Acting Woes

Posted on Jun 1st

Hey everyone. I recently started background acting on the side just to get acquainted with professional sets until I have enough connections to do other jobs in film (props/set design), and I have a couple questions. 1.) How long does it usually take to get paid for an extras gig and at what point should I be concerned about my check? I did a BG gig almost a month ago and still haven't received a check for it. Idk if that's normal, I've done gigs in the past and they almost always get the check to me in about two weeks so this is weird in my experience. If a month *is* a concerning amount of time, who do I even contact about my paycheck? Not the casting company, I assume? Any advice is appreciated. 2.) I've worked on a Netflix show recently and the experience has been.... Interesting to say the least. The actual time spent on set is fine but the communication between me and the BG casting team has been terrible. I've been sent wrong addresses for Covid tests, I've been straight up forgotten about in terms of getting me information for a shoot which left me sending email after email and text after text just to get some information, and there was one day that I was hired for that I had received no shoot info at all for (I waited all night and all morning for them to send me info; I knew it was an afternoon shoot but it was 11am and I had heard nothing and had been emailing them. I finally got hold of one of the casting team through a phone number only to be told the shoot had been cancelled and that they didn't tell me). Is this normal behavior for a casting company??? I get that info can go out late sometimes if a previous shoot wraps really late or something but to be totally forgotten about so many times just feels wrong, especially coming from the casting company that's *literally responsible for the background actors*. Should I just avoid this specific BG company or is this type of behavior normal?? I've worked with other BG companies in my area and it hasn't been quite like this so I just wanted input. Thanks in advance for any input, and I live in Atlanta btw (if that means anything lol).

Can't stop feeling like I've wasted A LOT of time

Posted on May 31st

Hey everyone, I'm a 25 year old actor living in LA. I moved to Los Angeles in January of 2020 and almost a year and a half later, I can't shake this feeling that I've wasted so much time in regards to my career. Shortly after I moved to LA, the pandemic hit and the entire film/TV industry shut down. During 2020 and the beginning of 2021, I suffered many bouts of paralyzing depression that cause me to isolate myself in my tiny apartment and just eat junk food and slob around. It not only caused a 20 pound weight gain but an almost complete lack of friends or real connections in LA. My 25th birthday was just a few days ago and I've decided that looking back on my missteps and failures won't help me achieve my goals. I know that going forward I have to be motivated and keep myself ambitious and driven. However, I can't stop obsessing over the fact that I've virtually squandered an entire year and a half of my career. It hasn't been all bad, of course. I did score some low-budget independent films and got my first agent last month. I just had higher expectations for myself professionally & time-management wise. Can anybody relate or have any tips? P.S. I know a lot of people have lost a lot more than just "time" during this pandemic so I know I can't complain forever. However, we all have a free license to complain just a bit, right? :P

I’m looking at hiring a voice actor for a children’s audiobook. The rates I’m seeing are all over the place. Voices123.com points to [Gravy for the Brain]( https://rates.gravyforthebrain.com/). Apparently rates for audiobooks are $100-$400 per finished hour. [Voices.com](https://www.voices.com/rates) recommends a rate of $1500+ for an hour. Any idea on why there is such a discrepancy and what a realistic budget for this would be?

They can work in animation or video games, but basically, who in American voiceover acting today do you feel have a large variety of voices for a large variety of different characters today? As an aspiring actor, I'm very interested in the concept of "character acting". Specifically, how (voice) actors can find characters that vary in circumstance, personality, appearance, morality or so on. And how this affects the type of voice you'd use. Who are voice actors who have made a name as great character actors? I'd love to see how they go about their craft. It would be great to hear your choices to learn about how they go about their craft!

NYC VO actors - home studio tips?

Posted on May 31st

Hi! I'm planning to move to NYC in August - probably Manhattan or Brooklyn. I'm also planning to start submitting for VO and audiobook narration projects. I'm a trained actor with an agent - just haven't booked anything yet. My agency also has a VO department. And I'm applying for a VO mentorship program through Penguin. So for now I feel pretty solid about my performative / technical skills, and industry connections and am not looking for advice on those fronts. What I'm worried about is creating a home studio. I'll most likely have a limited space with a lot of outside traffic noise to contend with. NYC VO actors with small apartments in noisy neighborhoods ... can you tell me about your home studio setups? I've been looking at little mic isolation boxes (like the kaotica eyeball and similar things), full on portable/collapsible recording booths, and I've also considered padding the inside of a closet assuming I can get one that's big enough to stand inside of. I figure I'll end up with something that I need to set up and tear down for every recording session, and that's fine - but mostly I just want something that's going to work. Thank you!

I am a new non-union actor without an agent and recently got cast for a guest star (1 day) role in a low budget indie drama series. The producer then sent me a pdf of Talent Agreement form and asked me to sign and email him back. However, there’s a field in the form to fill out my social security number. I am always skeptical when it comes to writing down my security number on a form. Is it a common practice to ask for the (not represented) actor’s social security by producers/management agencies? Should I give it out?

So I was just curious about if there were any people who that happened with.

Almost every single episode (exception of one) is a one-man-show with Name actors in a singular set. The acting is phenomenal, with interesting stories that have a lot of heart. Seems like a phenomenal resource for monologues as much of the episode is a monologue. This is a limited series on Amazon Prime- 6 episodes I believe? Anyhow, I just wanted you guys to know about it, I think some of you might really like it. I’m really enjoying it so far!

Has anyone ever used their iphone + apps +mics etc to make an industry standard demo reel?

Posted on May 30th

I know some movies have even been made with iPhones and they look good. An example is “Tangerine” And I want to do it myself instead of hire an expensive demo reel studio because IMO, it’s so overpriced for only *one* scene to be shot. I went to acting school before but I quit after graduation many yrs ago so I don’t have credits. I’m starting over after 15 yrs And I also know because of my race and gender and age and weight (Chubby, short, medium dark skinned unattractive 36 yr old Mexican American woman)I will struggle more than others to even get hired in a student film to have any credits. Or I will be cast as a stereotype (maid, nanny, background actor) or be asked to speak Spanish when I don’t know Spanish. I know my type outside of biased stereotypes, and I love to write scenes. I was born in America and my first language and ONLY language is English. But my face and look will make biased writers and directors never even consider me for all-American roles. If bias wasn’t an issue I know I would be great at playing an older, angry or stressed out mom or woman, or dark and twisted woman, because of my intense look. Someone said once I have shark eyes. Focused/intense and scary basically lol

What do you think of my voice?

Posted on May 30th

https://voca.ro/11qzUoBpz1bY So I’ve been considering doing voice acting as a hobby, however the biggest issue that I’m facing at the moment is that I don’t necessarily like the sound of my own voice that much whenever I hear it after being recorded. I’m pretty sure that’s common with most people, but my main point is that I wonder what I sound like to others, because I tend to think it sounds a bit too high and nasally every time I listen to it (I’m an almost 18 y.o. cis male) but you might not think that however. So I decided to share an audio recording of myself reading “The Rainbow Passage” and I would like to see what you guys think. How old you do think I sound and what sort of gender does it come off like to you? Do I have any speech impediments or a weird accent of any kind? Does my voice remind you of any other actor/person you know of? Would you already consider it to be innately suitable for this industry or not? I’m sorry if I sound insecure about myself, but I’m just genuinely curious to hear some advice and feedback from the more experienced fellows in here. I apologize for any mistakes in the file, but thanks for listening anyway.

Females scenes that not related to sex/romance?

Hey, I’m trying to find a scene to do for class for me and a female actress. She said she wanted to a scene that doesn’t involve any sex/romance. As a male actor I though it’s gonna be easy. Turns out, it’s fricking hard ! Almost every scene that have male and female is romantic. We might just do a scene with her and another actress and even if it’s all-female scene it’s very hard to find something that disconnected from above topics. Anyone have any scenes to recommend? I’m looking for: Addiction Death Parent/child relationship Brother/sister Sister/sister Money issues Got to be from a movie or a play. Personally I started to really feel bad for my fellow actresses. I love so many plays like Amadeus and Hamlet and golden boy and all my sons and I never realized that for the most part the female characters are very shallow or used as a sexual object or always in a relation to male characters. If you can recommend me on plays that wrote females characters better (meaning? Like actual people !) I would love to read them.

Finding Material for Self-Tape Practice

Finding Material for Self-Tape Practice

Posted on May 29th

There was a thread Thursday asking what has improved our acting most and I replied that a big part of what has made me better over the last year is my self-tape practice. I do one every day I don't have a booking, a real audition, a class, or a cd workshop up to six times a week. Yes I am a freak that has been doing the Audrey Helps Actors #SelfTapeMay challenge +2 since late last July. lol /u/crazyacting asked where I get my material for that and the original thread is off the front page now so I thought it might help more people to just start a new one: I look up established actresses in my casting range on IMDbPro and Google to see if I can find the scripts for stuff they were in when they were around my age. You can find a lot of pilot and movie scripts that way for free. Showfax has stuff too. Another resource for finding series regular material is /u/WinonaPortman's 2017-2020 pilot season lists. Look up the actors and then Google the pilots for the ones in your casting range. You can usually find the ones that went to series for free. My main guest and co-star casting is in procedurals and single camera comedy so I look for individual episodes of those kinds of shows that had at least three parts for girls in my age range below the series regulars. If there is a series regular in my age range, I will tape for that too if I am not already super familiar with the show. Then I order them in bulk from the Hollywood Script Shop if I can't find them for free in the proper format. Something else you could do if you have others to work with is to Google individual episodes for transcripts that you can put in the proper script format to create sides for each other. You can get almost everything that way. For me it would be cheating to do that for myself because the reformatting would get me off book in an unrealistic way. Come to think of it (facepalm) I could have saved some money by doing it that way and giving myself time to forget about them if I had known I would still be doing it ten months later. lol Please chime in if you have other methods.

I got my first audition yesterday for a play in NYC this summer. I have to turn it down. Gutted but I'm sure other opportunities will come around, right?

I submitted for a role on Actors Access a few weeks ago and never heard back so I assumed it was a no-go. I'm a newbie actress so I'm not picky, I just move on. It's part of the game. I'm just happy I am finally in a position where I can do this. Well, I decided that since I haven't been hearing back from any CDs here in NYC, I might as well put a pause on submitting until I am fully moved out to LA in mid-July. Previously, my thinking was "well if I get cast in anything, nothing is booked and I can just postpone my move" but it was getting closer and closer to my self-imposed date so I just went ahead with my plans. I haven't looked at anything since. To my surprise, I got a text from AA yesterday saying I had an Eco-Cast opportunity. It was that role, saying they liked my look and wanted me to send them a one minute monologue. I want to audition for this, it seems really cool! But the professional thing to do is to decline because I know I can't be there. Painful as I've been waiting my whole life to be on a stage/in front of a camera but also, I know this won't be the last time! It's just part of being in this industry!

It's one thing if actors coming-up-the-ranks are making podcasts - good for them. I just wish I could get insights and wisdom from podcasts where actors that are top dogs and A-listers share their secrets/wisdom/tips/advice. I have co-stars, recurrings, guest stars, but I would just love advice from truly up -there actors. Please God make Leonardo DiCaprio or Michael Shannon or Frances McDormand suddenly decide to do a podcast.

Depression meds

Depression meds

Hey folks, sorry if this has already been discussed... I searched and didn’t find much. I’m a professional actor and my depression has really gotten out of control lately. My therapist has wanted me to consider meds for over a year. Until now I didn’t want to... concerned that I will lose emotional availability blah blah blah. I’ve been on St. John’s Wort for over two months and it doesn’t seem to be helping. So does anyone have experience with acting while on meds for depression? Which meds? Thanks.

Any Toronto actors out there?

I live in Toronto and I don't know what to expect when it comes to auditions in Toronto in terms of audition locations. I am aware of the skype, zoom and self/pre-recorded auditions What I would like to know is, where are the auditions for professional/legitimate shows & movies held here in Toronto which you have to physically attend ? If you feel comfortable enough, please even tell the location/building you had an audition in. In my mind I would love to believe that its either at the CD's office or on-set location, but I know there has to be other locations, so please share your information,it would help out myself and others who im sure are wondering the same thing but too afriad or dont want to be called stupid for asking. (ill take the bullet for this one, you can call me stupid) I've tried researching audition tapes, but there was absolutely no way of telling where they are. Are they in random hotel rooms, studios (pinewood), CD's house/office, agents office, random office.?

I am asking for my cousin who suffers form dyslexia and would like to start acting. She was going to start in amateur theatre with the local amateur theatre group, but worries that dyslexia would hold her back. What are the chances of being a good actor despite having dyslexia?

Guys I read stanislavski’s An Actor prepares and now I’m finishing Building a Character but I’m confused by it. Honestly this is starting to feel like a chore for me.. I enjoy studying acting but it’s taking me hours to read and take notes for these books and I can’t even understand really what he’s getting at. It’s like I spend an hour taking notes on a chapter and I come away with only a small idea of a bigger picture.. there has to be an easier way than reading his books to get at the meaning of what he’s saying... what’s the next step or next book I should read from stanislavski after building a character? Plz help is there any one book that’s best to end my readings of his books? Please help

Toronto Actors - Thoughts on Noble Caplan Abrams?

Toronto Actors - Thoughts on Noble Caplan Abrams?

Hi r/acting, I'm not a huge reddit user so forgive me if there is a more appropriate place to make this post... but for any actors based in Toronto, I'm wondering what your thoughts are on the agency Noble Caplan Abrams. I've heard they are reputable but also kind of harsh. I submitted to a bunch of agencies earlier this week and got a response from them and a couple of others, so I'm just wondering if anyone has thoughts on them. Much appreciated :)

New actor - poor & croaky voice stopping me

New actor - poor & croaky voice stopping me

I am very new to acting, have only done about a dozen beginner night classes a couple of years ago. This time, getting back into it, I want to take a more holistic approach and develop different parts of myself, physcially and mentally. Especially while waiting for classes to start. My old feedback was predominantly my voice and posture. My voice though, is not going anywhere. I'm a male in my late 20's and have been very quiet my whole life and not shown much emotion. My voice is throaty/nasaly, very croaky and soft (regardless of time of day or what I eat, it's just my standard voice). I practice reading monologues and articles, sometimes read a book out loud though my throat gets sore within around 10 mins or less. I try focus on using my chest or even my stomach to generate voice to try get away from my upper throat (default). It doesn't seem to do anything but I'm thinking like using 'hidden' muscles in the gym, eventually, after thinking about them for a few days/weeks, you start to feel them and become controllable. I am trying to figure out how to develop my voice to be more strong, deep, have colour. I know it will take lots of time to get that, but I don't know how to even break out of this croaky, bland voice I have now and I'm concerned about doing things wrong and either hurting my throat or simply being extremely unefficient and wasting time. I suppose the extra concern is because I feel there's a million obstacles to overcome to even be 'up-to-speed' to the 'average' day 1 beginner. I have so much developing to do it's overwhelming.

I quit 15 yrs ago because for me, the uncomfortable truth in my past experience was the immediate limitations for me due to race. Back then 99% castings were only for white people. It didn’t even make sense because some roles were minor roles like “girlfriend” or “friend” and race made no sense to focus on. It wasn’t a a period piece or a biopic on a White person. It was minor roles, even in student films I also remember soon after reading that Latinos only get cast 2% of time despite making up 16% of the population. I was upset about it but I kept trying daily to read through endless casting notices hoping it would saying “seeking racially ambiguous” or “open to all types”. But nada. I know hispanic groups have tried to get hollywood to stop focusing on race so much Eventually due to many personal problems + the endless scrolling on backstage and other places that resulted in zero opportunities, I quit Well I’m a 35 yr old hot mess looking to return once my life is more together. I know my age alone will hinder me, but I’m praying things are better race wise? Or am I gonna have it just as bad as 15 yrs ago, endlessly scrolling and getting nowhere?
