Hi all, we just launched an app called "ActLike" (Android only for the moment) and we thought it would be very interesting for the acting community: [ActLike - Strike a pose 4 times - Apps on Google Play](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.actlike.app) The idea is very simple and fun: 4 selfies are taken in a row with a timer and a random pose indicated at the bottom of the screen. You need to strike each pose on camera as best as you can! There are 4 levels of difficulties, the hardest being "Actor Studio", dare trying! There is also a nice little collage of your 4 poses at the end of each session and you can share the results. We really hope you like it, and any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Aurel & Popy from ActLike
Hello everyone! My name is Mauricio, and a couple of months ago, I posted on this channel looking for a small group of actors who would be willing to join me in a web series I wrote about the perks and drawbacks of working remotely. After many months of work, we are finally launching, Remote Works, a web series about working remotely as a Kickstarter campaign: [https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mauricio-costa/remote-works-the-web-series](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mauricio-costa/remote-works-the-web-series) It has a sitcom/mockumentary appeal, and I would love to hear any feedbacks you may have. Also, if you really liked to watch other episodes, see character arcs and stories developing within Remote Works, consider backing our project on Kickstarter :)
I received a cmail requesting a callback for a tape I sent in (this was a self-submit, not thru my agent). However, they aren’t requesting a live eco cast CB ift seems? They’re just requesting another tape, but there are no instructions or notes on what they want me to change or what they liked etc. Is there a way for me to message them? The only way I’ve ever been able to send a message via cmail is if they actually message me first, not through the tape request message. This might be confusing lol but my question is: should I contact the casting office or would that be gauche? I have their info from their website and they didn’t say anything in the breakdown or tape request about “no calls or emails.” Thanks!
Hey all, How have you been doing with virtual auditions and having a good reader on hand? Is it your friend, bf/gf/ spouse? Do you ever have a hard time getting a good reader? I became curious about this after I had a semi-big audition and I could only get it done with my wife, who is not an actor. Made me appreciate having a good reader to play off of, and how auditioning with a cold/expressionless reader at a real audition is a skill set of it's own! It would be nice if there was a community based service that we could draw from to get readers, I don't think this era of virtual auditions is going away anytime soon.
Our agent is very adamant about not releasing audition/booking info for projects on social media. I haven't dealt with this but is it best to just no say anything till you get the greenlight to do so after post production? Also, is it best to wait till after it airs to release pics taken on set with other actors from he project or is this also considered breaking NDA? I don't use social very often but realize how easy it is to break NDA if you do decide to post certain things. Thanks!
Hey everyone! ❤️ I’m looking for actors/actresses that wants to meet up, rehearse ,exchange info , maybe even collaborate and enjoy this craft together. I’m based in LA. Covid made this entire business even more confusing for me...a complete noob. I think its always nice to have people who share same goals to push each other forward. Don’t know how i managed to live in LA for two years without knowing a single aspiring/working actors but here we are ! Took Stella Adler online but its really not the same... I’m 24yo female and as the headline says would love to meet some like-minded people. For those who find it important-I’ve been vaccinated Feel free to comment or DM me
Hi! I'm 16F and I live in Markham, Ontario. I've always wanted to be an actress since I was little, it's my dream job. It just seems so fun. Every time I watch movies, I always think about how fun it was to film them and I always catch myself envying other actors/actresses' lives because it just seems so fun. I regret not asking my mom to take me to acting classes when I was little. I remember being 10 and watching YouTube videos of how some actors started out and all of them started acting at like age 4 or something and had rich parents, so I thought I couldn't start at 10 (plus I only live with my mom who's tight on money). Looking back, 10 wasn't even late. I need to decide ASAP what career path I want, since I'll be graduating high school in a year and I need to send out applications for universities in the fall. I have no idea what I want to do with my life and when I'm looking through websites for potential career paths, I always think about how the job is so boring and how acting would be so much more fun. I just don't know what to do since my mom wants me to go to university and get a decent paying jobs, but most actors do not blow up when they start out, so instead of making loads of money like my mom wants, I'd probably be tight on money. The city I live in also has like no acting gigs, I live near Toronto, so maybe I could find stuff there, but I just don't know where to start. Also, a big reason I have done no acting at all yet is because I have A LOT of social anxiety. I mean, I have loads of anxiety in general, but my social anxiety is through the roof and I'm super awkward when I interact with people that I'm not close to. I think I'd be fine if I went to acting classes and I'll eventually get over it a bit, but I'm also super scared of judgement from others, so I'm scared to ask my mom about it. My mom is an immigrant and wants her kids to have good jobs and be successful, but my grades are REALLY BAD while my sister (9 years older than me) is an engineer. They know how much social anxiety I have, so they'd probably just laugh at me and say stuff like "you think you can do acting when you're scared to order food at McDonalds?" Also, everyone I know would know that I'm doing acting stuff and it's just scary for me cause I feel like they'd judge me? If I do decide to peruse acting, should I go to like university and take an acting program there? Or should I just take some acting classes and just start doing stuff as soon as I can? I'm just lost and yeahhh idkkkk. Sorry that this is long and all over the place. I just threw up all of my thoughts, but please let me know what you think I should do. Thank you!!
Guys I’m a new actor right now I can’t take classes but I want to practice acting in some form to get better.. anyone know of acting exercises to do alone? Plz help me I really want to get better at acting but I’m gonna have to wait a while due to issues I don’t control in order to take a class but I’m anxious and just want to have acting exercise to do
Guys I just read and took notes for An Actor Prepares I’m gonna be honest I’m a bit disappointed cause it got confusing at some points .. the info to me is hard to digest in some points.. I planned on reading the next stanislavski book but I’m honestly not looking forward to it. Is there any alternatives for me who is a beginner to get clear cut answers in a book?
Hey peeps! 18m / I’m last year high school student and so interested in biology but what i love the most and had a bit of experienced (w some appreciations but not really care about any of them and know they’re probably not important for like being a good actor atm). I know how is it for people trying to be a great actor and many can’t just make it. I just thought of biology as a backup plan for my life. Just wanted to ask is there anyone who studied major in biology(or other related field like neuroscience for example) and dropped it or got a degree and pursue acting? Is it possible? Is it hard to like study in this such field and think about acting too? Can it be a backup plan for your life?
Edit 1: can’t a person just teach themselves about acting and how to act.
I feel like I have a 3rd class citizen acting journey, with crappy reps that get me auditions so infrequently I don't even feel like an actor. how are you ever supposed to make progress when people with good reps are auditioning all the time? it just doesn't make sense to me. I have no idea how to spend my time to get ahead or make any kind of tangible progress in my "career" at this point. if you can even call whatever this is a career. it feels like a big joke. I'm just tired doing everything I can think of and getting no where with this. I know every actors journey is different, but good agents are good agents and they are the ones that get actors a career. crappy agents are worthless. it just sucks so much
okay so i’m fairly new to this subreddit as i just discovered how interested i was in acting. up until a month ago, whenever i was asked what i wanted to be when i was older, my answer was always a pediatrician. i’m good in math and science, particularly chemistry for which i’ve studied for 3 years through college level programs (for reference- i’m 17). i always said that yet i knew in the back of my head that i really had no passion to be a pediatrician whatsoever and even the thought of being one terrified me (basically treating someone, prescribing things— it felt like a huge responsibility of having someone’s life in your hands that i was never fond of). anyways, recently i rewatched one of my favorite series with my favorite actress and realized i found myself always thinking about the behind the scenes, putting myself into the actor’s shoes about how they’d say things before they did with a huge camera in front of them, and just about the whole process in general. now, i’ve always been intrigued by the film/tv industry but i never really thought much of it. the idea of taking on a new character/persona excites me and so does working on a set with other people and bringing the characters to life. all of it really excites me— from being behind the camera or in front of it, however i really think being in front of it is where i lean more towards. i like it so much that i really want to be an actress when i’m older. i find myself thinking about it everyday and i know it’s soon of me to say that, but i just now payed attention to something that was always there. i also find the actual film aspect of it to be interesting, but not AS much as i do acting. i enjoy editing things as well and the idea of filming a tv show/movie is something that attracts my eye as well. so, as i discovered this new interest of mine, i’m conflicted on a number of things: 1. how do i tell my mom i want to pursue acting? i feel like she’ll be disappointed in me and laugh in my face. 2. i have no clue how to get into acting. i wouldn’t even know where to start and money is tight right now (however, my uncle is a successful producer in LA and has produced many shows for popular networks and streaming services. i shared with him my new interest in both film and acting— i focused more on the film part because i was afraid of his reaction to acting— and he said he’d love to speak with me and offer me some advice so i plan on doing that soon) 3. do you go to college for acting? i want to have a degree i can fall back on if it doesn’t work out so i don’t know if going to school for acting is necessary (failure— in anything— is my biggest fear) if i had to choose between the two, i would definitely choose acting over the film aspect to it. in my head i’ve come up with the plan to major in film (not really sure yet— got to talk to my uncle about that one and see what he says and what he majored in in college) and pursue acting outside of it. not sure if that’s realistic any help or tips or advice towards my situation is appreciated!
I’ve been pondering and doing some research into a show about Commercials. There are so many actors that make commercials that are so much a part of our lives, and I’m trying to think of a way to tell their stories (most likely your stories, too!) I think it would look like a reality show and introduce actors and actresses going through the phases of making commercials, and include the writers who write them too. When I watch a commercial, I think of who came up with the idea for it, of writers fleshing out ideas and the actors who give it life. Each commercial is a project and it’s amazing to think of what went into them! I have zero experience writing for TV. Do you good folks think this idea has merit?
I’m an established actor but being a producer is something that I’d really love to become. But do you see it as a conflict of interest? For example, I would say being a casting director and actor is a conflict of interest, especially if you’re casting yourself. I’m not looking for right or wrong answers, just opinions here! Thank you. Edit: I know that there are lots of actor/producers out there, but many of those seem to be in the top 1% of the industry and have so much wealth it’s not an issue.
Hi, I've been looking into acting schools in Aus. Is there a difference between NIDA, WAAPA and Actor's Centre in terms of BFA in Acting? Any recommendations for their short courses? If you've attended any, could you share your experiences?
I'm a working actor, mostly TV & commercials, and I did one high profile video game project several years ago (mocap and face, with voice). There was a cast of several hundred, so I'm sure I'm not the easiest to find, but after acting in several scenes (including a monologue) and recording a few hundred lines as well, I expected SOMEONE to see me (someone being gamer nephews & nieces, friends, etc). Those folks who know me have kept their eyes and ears out for me, but to no avail. I'd love to get some footage of myself just for kicks. Anyone with more experience with this have had any luck? The expansive NDA keeps me from specifically describing the scenes I was in. Thanks!
I'm an ex-actor and I miss it a lot. I don't have time to commit to actual performances and all the work that leads up to it but I would love the ability to do table readings or even run lines with people. Is there a way to do that? Like a group or community, I can sign up with to do it? Preferably virtual.
I would like to improve my general speech for on-camera acting and I thought I’d come to this community since Voice Actors are constantly in front of a mic and making sure they express lines clearly. I dabble with tongue twisters but I feel like it isn’t enough. Thank you guys!
Does anyone have any experience with or knowledge about having UK Representation as an actor based in the US? I specify with EU citizenship (I know the UK has left the EU but a lot films across Europe) because I know work-permits are always a big deal for reps. I have management here in the US but feel like I'm not being seen by UK/EU Casting, and assume UK agents would have a stronger foothold on that field (so many current projects filming out of Hungary, Czech Republic, etc...) Curious to hear any thoughts.
I am by no means a voice actor. However i do like to make funny voices or just change my voice in general to make a joke or when me and my friends are playing a roleplaying game. I am having trouble with deeper voices as they can make me gag and even sometimes
I want to be a voice actor but I do not know how to do more then 3 voices and one of them is my own voice
Preface. Never hired an editor. Always have had my voice actors do the work. I have 6 narrators working on multiple projects at the moment and all are behind because of editing. Pay - 40-60 USD per PFH. Pay as we go per PFH to reduce risks to both parties. Paypal or Transferwire. If US resident a w9 will be required if outside a W88 ben will be required. Start date - June. Work Available. I have my narrators already and run duets with guest stars sometimes. The potential editor will take the audio from the narrators, juggle the male to female lines until they seamlessly match the text of the manuscript are balanced and flow to all ACX standards. You would need to communicate directly with the narrators to correct issues. This offer is only for managing duet (not dual or single narration). Content includes adult situations with violence, gore, intense action, swearing, and yes, sex at times.
Quick background - I am a very novice actor with representation from two agencies in the midwest/northeast markets. I am primarily pursuing lifestyle modeling at this point but am still interested in day player and principal acting roles if they come around. One of my agencies is collecting one minute monologues to submit to a CD. I had some formal instruction years ago and am totally on my own right now. Any gentle feedback would be appreciated. I'm also struggling to get this thing down to exactly 1 minute. Here's a take from today. https://imgur.com/CQzvQm8
I'm in the production, but don't benefit directly from views. It's a fan-made season 2 of ITV's 'Sanditon', and while I'm promoting it elsewhere for its own sake, I thought you might like it here as an example of some amateur dramatics done despite the hurdles of remote working! Also the actor playing Charlotte is a genuine pro, and our Sidney (male lead) is a professional voice actor. It was so fun, and a welcome distraction every Sunday. Coping with time zones, costumes, accent work, Zoom backgrounds, editing; lessons learned, so if anyone wants any advice, or to generally talk about the process, DM me. Here's the 'official' press release. ***Sanditon Season 2: Parker Brothers Build the Boardwalk*** is a 10-part reimagining of the unfinished *Sanditon* story by Jane Austen, told in digital theatre form all filmed and produced by the power of Zoom. Written by Carol Lisa O’Brien, narrated by Jane Austen’s fifth great niece Caroline Jane Knight from Chawton, where Jane wrote Sanditon in 1817, and performed in the pandemic by 30 strangers from around the world. This innovative online DIY theatrical extravaganza for our times is FREE to watch on the Jane Austen Literacy Foundation YouTube channel – any advertising revenue will be used to fund literacy projects. Here's the trailer we made! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ds96NZgdzoM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ds96NZgdzoM)
So far I'm a dry child actor. I've been in about 5 musicals, a web video and an advert. To enhance my skills, I joined my lower school choir for about 4 years and have performed on many concerts, live audiences and even a music video. I've done voice over like ONCE (remember that web video). I was doing another project. A short drama reciting but Covid came and it got cancelled. I've been searching and searching for projects but as soon as I want to hit apply, I get cold feet and brush it off or you need things like a video reel, which I don't have yet. I don't think I'm ready for an agent though. Just wanted to get this off my chest.
Hi! I'm a 14 year old who has always loved acting. For a long time(until I was 12), I lived in a small town that was as far as you could get from Hollywood. I've always dreamed of acting professionally. I've been the lead in school plays and musicals, but I've never done anything professional. I'm going into high school next year and I've decided I want to be a lawyer. Not because I don't want to act, but because it seems out of reach. When I was younger, I'd tell myself that I'd be in a movie by the time I was in 8th grade, that I'd be famous. I realized later, the love of acting has nothing to do with wanting to be famous. It was just the ideal, perfect reality sold to me by watching way too many interviews with child actors. Anyways, I'd become content with only doing school and community plays and was moving on from this dream when I saw that there is a casting happening for the Percy Jackson book series(my favorite by far) I match the open casting call requirements roughly enough and I had to audition. If I actually got it, I might not want to uproot my life and move to LA. That's not what it's about. It's about gettin closure on a dream. I want to be able to look back, a decade from now, and say that I tried. That it wasn't meant to be. I couldn't live knowing I didn't try.
Hey fellow actors and actresses! I’ve been in love with this art since I was a kid. Community theater, musicals, show choir, play for the parents - the works throughout the years. I took an acting class in college and some others here and there. I’ve been with a talent agency for about 6 years. I’ve gotten small background work and a couple of commercials through them. That’s all they really book anyhow. My question is...at what time should I go ahead and try to submit to bigger agencies that may get me better auditions? I ask because I’m not a seasoned actor...but I don’t feel like I suck either. Thoughts?? Do I just go for it? Or wait years to have a solid reel for student films?
Hey everyone. English isn't my first language and I have a pretty rough accent. I want to learn how to voice act but I'm not sure if I'll be able to do that without showing my rough accent. Putting aside accent specific roles for a sec, do you think you can become a voice actor even if you don't have a standard, clear English accent?
I'm on the midst of posting a really goofy meme and I need one or two voice actors to voice Garfield and Jon. The line for Garfield is only one word "Lasagna?!". I'm looking for someone who can voice like how Lorenzo Music voiced Garfield. There are two short lines for Jon Arbuckle. I'm also looking for someone who can voice this character like Thom Huge. If anyone is interested in this and are able to voice these characters (with a good mic), let me know! For payment I can't do anything too crazy. This is for a small YouTube video and its just three short lines.
I was wondering if anyone knew of sites that allowed you to post job listings for free. I'm currently looking for an actor to take part in a short YT video that can be done online (paid). The gig is incredibly easy and should take less then 30 minutes. I'm not really interested in purchasing a membership as I just need 1 actor for the task and then I'll never need it again. If anyone has some recommendations that would be great!
Hi! I am currently an actress based out of Canada and have been having a hard time getting an agent. The reason for this, I think, is because I am not willing to act in scenes that require nudity, sex, or kissing. I usually tell agents this during our first meeting and as a result that is very hesitant to sign me and I have not been able to get an agent for a while now. I still love acting and want to pursue it despite the restrictions I have for myself. Is it possible for me to be my own agent - if so, how? Can I sign up for services (Breakdown services, Casting Networks, etc - all the stuff agents use) as my own agent - how does this work? Thanks!
Hi guys, I have a couple of YouTube channels in various niches that need voice acting/narration done. This will be a long-term project and you can expect to narrate around 3-4 Videos per week (if not more) - Payment for these type of vids are usually $10 per narration (length of the video is a maximum of 8mins. Please contact me with a sample or Portfolio on either Reddit DM's or my email: [connor@youtubeautomationltd.com](mailto:connor@youtubeautomationltd.com) Cheers Guys!
So, I’m in a weird position—I’m in a top MFA program for Acting and I think I’m a very good actor. I’ve done podcasts and audio projects and have made an animation demo—I’ve figured out how to translate my acting skills to an audio medium. I feel like I’ve done all the things you’re “supposed” to do to have a career in this industry. But I have no idea what to do next. In TV/Film and Commercial, it seems like there’s a path: you go to school, you sign with a small agency, you book work for a few years, you move to a bigger agency. But in voice acting, it seems even the smallest roles on every animated project are repped by the same 10-or-so big agencies (CESD, Buchwald, DPN, etc.) that seem to be competitive to be repped by. I’ve been sending my demo to reps (mostly because I figure worst case scenario they trash it and forget my name in 10 minutes). And I just don’t know what to do next. Is there a Backstage or Actor’s Access-type database for animation work? On Voices.com, voices123, and Casting Call Club, it seems to be very focused on smaller commercial and promo work, and the few animated projects seem to be YouTube fan films, etc.—is there a site I’m missing, or is this a subset of this industry you truly need an agent to work in? I don’t know. I’m just lost and any advice would be helpful, haha. Is there something I’m missing?
I’m doing a project for a psychology class in school and I’m looking for a male voice capable of pulling off a New York/Brooklyn and a standard Southern accent. The script isn’t any longer than 30 seconds. Would appreciate the help! I’m offering $15 for just two reiterations of the same script in the two accents. Thank You!
So, I'm an actress; however, I don't have much experience in VOICE acting (I've voiced characters for someone's radio plays a couple of times) and I'm doing another one this weekend, but I don't really like the work I've done before (especially the first recording). I don't sound animated enough. The person I first recorded with SOUNDED like a character while I sounded like a person (if that makes sense). My voice seems flat to me, no roundness. It made me cringe tbh. I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice? VA is the ultimate goal for me as an actor, so I really want to get better at it with the opportunity I do have.
Hi all! I am an actress and am looking to create a stage name since my legal name sounds quite foreign. I am just wondering what all the complications of creating a stage name are??? When accepting a job, do we need to inform production of our stage name, etc?
I am trying to research grad school programs (specifically, MFAs in Acting), but when I speak to other actors the only input anyone has seems to be, "Well, don't get a Masters unless you want to teach. You don't need an advanced degree to act." Which isn't helpful at all when what I'm looking for is information that isn't University endorsed propaganda about what makes their program great. But I also feel like MFA Acting programs are so niche, most of the grad school groups (here and on other social media platforms) aren't really informed at all. if anyone has any information on any of the URTA schools in particular (especially the big land grant schools that I will have to really sell my fiance on because she isn't too keen on living in the middle of nowhere red state as the brown half of an interracial lesbian couple, and I really can't blame her for it) - what are their pros, their cons, do they pay or offer scholarships, how much time will be spent on stage vs in the classroom, are they affiliate with any professional theatres, what does the student body look like (do they have a variety of ages and ethnicities or are they all in white and in their 20s)? Or if you know anyone who can help... please point me their way. I am so burnt out on looking at University websites. And all the blogs that hit on the same top 5 schools again and again and again (I don't need Backstage to tell me Yale is great). Thanks so much.
Hi everybody. We need a voice actor for a video we need to show our investors. We are hoping to get our seed funding by the end of this month. So, you will be getting paid when that happens. I have worked as a freelancer myself so don't wanna scam you guys. We would prefer a somewhat beginner who can use this project it to add to his/her portfolio, in case it doesn't work out in the end, although it hopefully will. We already have developers working and the site is in progress as well, so this is not that big of a risk. If you think this job is for you, hit me up. Thanks P.S: Pay will be around 100-200 usd, based upon the suitability and quality of your voice.
I’ve been with this agent since 2017 though I’ve been hip-pocketed and never signed on an official contract (which I was OK with). I did manage to book around 6 projects since our relationship began. He used to be responsive in emails, and we’d meet at his office at least twice a year before COVID. I’ve been having a good string of auditions and self-tape requests from him since the beginning of the 2021. I haven’t booked anything but I was grateful that he’d been submitting me. Then all of the sudden, nothing. No submissions, no correspondence, and no audition requests for a month now. I’ve emailed him when I heard from actors in my network that a couple of TV shows I’m interested in were casting for my ethnic background, but he hasn’t responded to my emails. His social media is pretty active and celebrating actors on his roster who recently booked stuff, so it seems like I’m being ignored. I get that it’s a tough business, made even tougher by the realities of shooting around COVID, and just because you’ve not been booking stuff doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re unemployable or lacking in talent. I’m self submitting for the smaller stuff on Actors Access, and got involved in a couple of virtual play readings in the meantime. But I hate that I’m missing out on opportunities to be seen for higher profile stuff. What can I do? Do I try to set up time with him? Do I start looking for another agent? Do I need a refresh (new headshots and updated reel)? Am I missing something or not seeing a bigger picture here?
Use this thread to post your headshots for feedback, get info on your age range/type, find good headshot photographers, ask any questions you may have about headshots. If you are posting a DIY headshot for feedback, and not just a snapshot in order to get feedback on your age range/type/etc, it is advised that you do at least some basic research on what actor headshots look like--composition, framing, lighting. You will find a Google Image search for "actor headshots" to be very helpful for this. Non-professional shots are fine for age/typecasting; please keep in mind that one picture is a difficult way to go about this. Video of you moving and speaking would be ideal, but understandably more difficult to post. For what it's worth, the branding workshop at SAG-AFTRA recommends a five-year age range. That's inclusive, so for example 19-23, 25-29, 34-38, etc.
The title says it all. I've been working in VO for about a year, but have only been able to dedicate time to it after my daughter goes to bed (9:00 - Midnight). During that time, even with my constraints, I've learned a lot about the business, acting, tech, and such of VO and I've found a modicum of success. I find that my booking rate is often higher than what others mention, even with paying jobs. I've had a few higher paying jobs and I really feel that I'm in a position to make the move to full time VO. I believe that with a better dedicated time, I'd be able to reach more customers, audition more, and get work done quickly in a way I cannot currently do. On top of all of that, I really feel that my time in corporate cubicle farms is coming to a close. I'm fed up with not being fulfilled with my work, having so little time with my family, and getting burnt out from long days of work between my office job, VO, and a side business I run. To others who have taken the dive to do VO full time, can you tell me about your experiences and considerations that I might be missing? As a non-union actor, I'm looking at family health plans, trying to figure out what to do about tax preparation, and figuring out how to budget for inconsistent income.
I usually post helpful stuff on here and questions, but I think this one I just need an ear. I have always wanted to act. I went to hs in a really racist area of the south. Growing up I was the only WOC in all my classes (I am not black, but I am a dark-skinned asian WOC) and I was made fun of my ethnicity. Another female from my same hs graduation year, white, blonde hair blue eyed, popular cheerleader from HS and I kept in touch from drama class. Everything was okay until she asked me how acting was going and I let her know the castings I was going in for (and booking) were about 10-15+ years younger than our age range. (For ex. at 37 I booked 2 things in one week ages 22 and 27.) When I told her this she got really pissed off at me saying, "I need to own my age." I told her it's none of the world's business how old I am. It's like me outing a gay man actor - he will come out if and when he wants to - it can hurt a person's career. But she wouldn't budge and kept saying that I have to tell on IMDB my age. It did not end well and she said she owns her age (she frankly, looks it, and she has gained a lot of weight in the past few years around 35 plus pounds after her kids) - I have chosen to be childfree. She blew up at me and said some really awful things and I have tried to avoid her. But now a year or two later she is coming up on my FB and IG (I blocked her now) saying things on my posts like, "I CANNOT BELIEVE WE GRADUATED 20 YEARS AGO FROM HIGH SCHOOL!!!!" Look, yes could it be jealousy/envy yes - but I am just posting this because this industry is so hard for everyone and I feel being a woc has bought me time - thank goodness the melanin and genes have helped me play younger - I was willing to let bygones be bygones bc she was really nasty to me in hs sometimes as a popular cheerleader - I thought she had grown up and some of my friends have but clearly she has not - and this is really hurting and creepy for me. Again like I said age is none of anyone's business - you are what you play - and again it's like me outing someone queer-identifying - it is none of the world's business just like it is none of their business re: my age. Imagine she went broadcasting someone that is bi-actor without them giving her permission to do so? She told me she has cast before and I don't look those age ranges at all and I am lying to myself, but clearly if I am booking those ages, I am booking those ages. If it were her film I wouldn't get cast and that is fine. Ugh. She is blonde and blue eyed - tv is CUT OUT for her look - and here she is still coming at me. I am not a light skinned model. I am hurting, you guys.
I’m a new actor trying to build a showreel but i find it hard to get credits/auditions where are usually places/websites where you recommend for open calls or auditions in general? It’s quite hard to build a showreel because it’s a lot easier to get credits with a showreel but you also can’t quite make a showreel without credits
Hi everyone. I’m an aspiring actor in my early 30s. I don’t have any representation or professional experience but have spent a lot of time working on my craft and training with some wonderful teachers over the past few years. In one of my acting classes, I’ve heard classmates mention that they’re “shooting their real” or “having their reel made”. I always thought that a reel is something that gets created over time with experience? Basically it sounds like they’re hiring someone to produce/direct footage just for a reel. Is this a thing? I am based in LA and would love to know if anyone has had experience doing something like this, how it went, and some recommendations for someone who would be able to help me in this way. I have acted in some student films and shorts but none of them really turned out well enough to showcase my talent. Would appreciate any advice you have! Thanks for reading.
I am a Canadian actress - can I apply for SAG-AFTRA? If so, what are the requirements for non-American actors?
Storytelling has been so instrumental in helping me heal from self-loathing and finally accept a part of myself that I tried so hard to repress for years. This past fall, I watched a documentary on Netflix called “Disclosure”, which featured many trans people from the industry talking about how trans representation has changed people’s perceptions. Particularly, it was focused on how predatory or repulsive depictions of trans people have made our existence into a joke. As someone who had spent so long repressing my identity as a trans man, the idea that I deserved to be more than an object of disgust or ridicule changed my world. I watched another film starring an actor who had been featured in the documentary about a man battling PTSD and depression, and booooy was it one of the most beautiful performances I have ever seen. Even in the silent character movements he was so engaging and heartbreaking and connected. I saw myself in his character. He was nominated for an ACTRA award for this movie and dang, did he deserve it. In December, the actor I mentioned earlier opened an acting challenge for young trans actors (can play under 18), with some finalists being chosen for a master class with him. I had never acted before, but I decided to put my all into it because of how much his work had helped me in accepting myself. I got coached and practiced for weeks. I didn’t get chosen, but he sent me a very touching email that encouraged me to press on. He even said that it’s hard to believe I had no acting experience, which was such an honor to hear from someone who had inspired me to start acting. I felt a rush of determination. I started taking classes, auditioning for local productions, reading books and plays, and making practice self-tapes. It was pretty exciting at first! Still, something has felt so wrong this whole time. I don’t know if it’s my gender struggles, but I’m not having much fun with this. I don’t really see myself fitting into any role in particular. Female roles feel wrong, and male roles just remind me of how not-male I still look, so early on in transition. I’m always so worried about doing the “wrong” thing, showing the “wrong” emotion, or looking ugly, and I get extreme anxiety. I auditioned for a community theatre play about a young trans man who is navigating his relationships with his family, friends and boyfriend through his transition. “Perfect”, I thought. As embarrassing as it sounds, I imagined my not-so-supportive family seeing me playing the role and finally understanding everything I go through. I felt pretty disappointed when I didn’t get the role. I was listening and reading a lot of stuff from Larry Moss where he talks about how you shouldn’t get into acting to be loved or to heal yourself from your past. That was kind of a wake up call for me. I came to a pretty stunning realization: Am I hoping to be an actor to validate myself as a trans person? I have all of these self-aggrandizing fantasies about being in some great work that makes a person finally accept themselves, just like the actor I mentioned did for me. But you can’t pour from an empty cup. I know I’ll always have the air of desperation and low self-confidence if I need to feel loved by audiences and casting directors and teachers. I don’t even know what to do anymore. Acting classes feel like a slog lately. I’m afraid I may have gotten into this whole thing for all the wrong reasons, which is why I’m not having much fun with it. I’d just love to do something that makes someone feel less alone or open dialogue about important social issues. I just hope I’m not trying to heal myself or seek out the acceptance I lack in my life through acting. If I’m all focused on my own agendas, how will I ever be able to deliver an authentic enough performance to connect with someone? It’s not about me, it’s about the work. It’s frustrating how egocentric I am. I wish I could just forget about myself and lose myself in a character. I’m getting therapy, which I’m hoping will bring me a little closer to what I’m looking for. Maybe it’s just not the right time. I realize I’m the only one who can say if acting is right for me, but I thought getting some outside opinions might help. Sorry in advance if this isn’t the place for this. Does anyone have any advice that might help me put things into perspective?
For Dramatic work I'd have to say Jurnee Smollett in *Eve's Bayou* For Comedic work, I'd say Macauley Culkin because *Home Alone* would definitely not have fully worked without him
Hello! So I got asked to audition for a role in a student play. I was given a dialogue to perform and a brief description of the play's concept. While they did say I can ask questions if I had them, I don't want to overstep/sound like an ass when I do ask questions, so: Would it be weird to ask more info about the character or the scene I'm supposed to do? I don't know if these things are vague on purpose to find actors who understand the role better. This is the first time I'm auditioning for a specific role instead of just a general spot in a production. If there are more appropriate questions to ask so I can have a better audition, please also let me know. Thanks!
Weeee, you found me!
I'm your buddy Bottie, I was hiding behind the scenes, but now that you've found me I'd be happy to tell you what I'm doing.
I just wrote a few fun facts about Web For Actors
