For me, it was my love of cartoons, video games, and anime as a kid, quoting what I watched at that time and just having fun with anything related to animation. As an adult, I began paying attention to the voices and looking at the website behind the voice actors and shocked upon seeing how many roles my favorite voice actors have and how radically different they sound from one role to another. I also watched behind-the-scenes videos and seeing how much fun they're having doing this job acting with their voices. I also began watching interviews and learning about how they get into a character which is really fascinating to me. I had a brain blast moment after thinking about what I wanna do with my life Jimmy Neutron style and said I wanna be a voice actor because it seems like a fun job and it's most certainly one I can keep for 5 years and beyond and finally feel good about having a job.
What do actors do to make themselves look younger when playing a teenager for a role? Like when a 22- 23-24 year old man is cast to play a 16-17-18 year old teenage boy what do they do to make themselves appear that age? Make up cover up beard shadow? Fringe hair style? What are y’all thoughts on this?
So this is a discussion to gain perspective, advice or just opinions. The year 2020 gave me great perspective and I went through a period of intense self development & growth. It was a chaotic year but it was one that I needed. SO much introspection and all aspects I thought thoroughly on. The one that stood out, chasing my dream. My dream of becoming an actor is only now in effect. All my energy and focus is centered on it. However, considering how Covid decided to screw over everything on a global scale, I'm looking at things logically. I'll be pretty new to the industry which has suffered greatly due to this virus. I'll most likely have to take some time searching for a decent agency to represent me. I'll be competing against a lot more experienced and seasoned actors and actresses. How many opportunities will be available to me. Now this doesn't really chip away at my determination to pursue acting as a career. BUT these are questions I have to ask myself. So for those in my position or who have recently been in my position & those who have experience, what are your thoughts on this? (Oh I'm 28 and I have a background in Architecture. So I'll be completely new to the acting field. I don't doubt my ability to achieve what I want though).
Hey all, I moved from LA to the NYC area during the beginning of the pandemic and I’m starting to jump back into acting now that things are getting back to normal. I’ve noticed that there seem to be less New York breakdowns posted on there than LA. Just curious, is this just because of the nature of “less” work and stuff going on in the area? I know Backstage is much bigger here, but are there a lot more postings compared to AA? I know there are some sites listed on the sidebar but I didn’t know if jobs might be double posted or if there’s enough work circulating to justify the subscriptions for other sites. Any other sites you’d recommend for the area? Thanks!
A young actor I know just got cast, after a self-tape I did with him for a shoot that is happening In Malaysia. The director is called Yeo Joon Haan It feels fishy to me...Any thoughts, considering the wariness non-union actors should have about overseas projects. I've done some imdb pro sleuthing, but would appreciate any help! #### Company **Amok Films Sdn Bhd** Joon Han Yeo and Boris Kalaidjiev, prods.; Rafflesia Pong, casting mgr. #### Production Description Casting "You Are Here," a English- and Chinese-language comedy to be shot in Malaysia, which includes a sequence where Jesus drops by Kuala Lumpur to escort a dying filmmaker to the Afterlife, as a favour to the Buddha, but can't help giving the filmmaker a hard time about his religious and (un)artistic choices. Production states: "Please note, we posted a similar casting notice for this role and project last year but our production was interrupted by the pandemic. We plan to resume shooting in June/July 2021 (this year). If you have already submitted an application for this role last year, you don't have to submit again. We will consider your earlier submission and any self-tapes you've uploaded. Unless, of course, you want to update your application/self-tape. Thanks very much." #### Roles Collapse All Rolesthis is Jesus as dreamed up by the protagonist of the film; this is Jesus, who, though still a strapping 33-year old in appearance, is 2020 years old at heart; extroverted but a little bitter, loves to talk and is always one minute away from outstaying his welcome.Ethnicity: Middle Eastern, White / European DescentRequired Media: Headshot/PhotoView Application #### Rehearsal and Production Dates & Locations Shoots June/July in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. #### Compensation & Union Contract Details Professional Pay: $2,500 - $3,500Pays $500 per shoot day (travel to Malaysia, food and lodging provided). It will be a five-to-seven-day shoot but actor should expect to spend 18 to 21 days in Malaysia. Production states: "This period includes a mandatory 7-day quarantine in a hotel, which we will pay for. You will also be required to take a PCR swab test 3 days prior to your flight. We do apologize for the inconvenience but these are our current government requirements. And we do want everyone to feel and be safe on our shoot. Hopefully, the requirements will be eased by June/July!" #### Key Details Seeking talent: Nationwide (Malaysia) ##### Additional Instructions: Production states: "Include videos of previous works or even of you telling us a bit about yourself would help us very much. If you're shortlisted, we will send you a script to record an audition self-tape." #### Additional Materials Director/Producer's IMDB [https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2373086/?ref\_=nv\_sr\_srsg\_0](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2373086/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0) Director's Bio Yeo Joon Han is the writer, producer and director of the only Malaysian films to have won awards at the Venice Film Festival. "Sell Out!" which won the Young Cinema Award in Venice in 2008 made history by being the first Malaysian film to win at the prestigious Locarno Film Festival in 2020, 12 years after its world premiere! Michael Atkinson of the Village Voice had this to say about Sell Out!:- “Malaysia is where the shit’s happening now, as evidenced by the fresh sprout of modernism in Yeo Joon Han’s marvelicious Sell Out!, a ceaselessly inventive excoriation of modern industry and reality-show media ... it’s also a loose, rich, beguiling, sometimes sophomoric Godardian triumph” Joon Han recently made a couple of online short films in China with his Bulgarian Director of Photography, Boris Kalaidjiev. Shanghai 4AM was viewed over 30 million times within the first 3 days of its release while Chongqing 4AM was viewed over 125 million times in its first week of release on Youku as well as other online platforms. Boris and Joon Han will be reuniting for "You Are Here." Shanghai 4AM [https://vimeo.com/amokfilms/shanghai4am](https://vimeo.com/amokfilms/shanghai4am)
I'm hoping some voice directors or producers who work in animation can chime in here. If any actors in that world want to chime in as well I'd love to hear from you. Do you all have any formulas for estimating time for directed sessions? What would be your process for taking a script and figuring out how much time you'd need from each talent in the studio? Is there some sort of line count calculation that would get it into the ballpark? I'd love to hear how you all are handling this.
I have been trying to prepare an email to a team of casting directors (each on will have a different personalized one of course im not lazy) . I know that my chances are slim to nothing since the only things I have done is a school play and at home short films. My Reel only has two monologues and two short film scenes in it. I have at home taken headshots. I hope that emailing the CD will just give me the chance to send in an audition. What should I put? What should I not put? I dont want to ramble and talk about everything and anything. Here is what I have for my first email so far: Hello \*CD NAME\* ! I am sorry if emails about castings are unprofessional, that is not my intention whatsoever. I’d love to introduce myself to you. My name is \*my name\* I am an actress and filmmaker (with a very convincing british accent). I couldn't help but take my chances and email you when I saw that \*the movie\* was getting ready for a sequel. The original resonated with me a lot and I became attached to \*characters name\* story since it resembled mine quite a bit. If you are casting for the future sequel I do hope you keep me in mind or I hope I came at just the right time. I hope that this eagerness is refreshing and not bothersome. I have attached my materials thank you have an amazing day! Sincerely \*my name\* \*my materials\*
I’m actually not a voice actor, or particularly interested in becoming one (at least not as a profession or for a career). However I am very much obsessed with reading aloud to my wife and upcoming child (we are expecting a beautiful little girl in August). My wife says I have a pleasant reading voice, but I personally cringe at my attempts to improv or create voices for characters when they speak in the book. I want to step up my game and truly entertain my growing audience (wife and future children). So I wanted to see if some of you awesome voice actors might have some advice on where an amateur like me could start? Anything helps, thank you!
Are the slateshots specifically assigned to specific geadshots?
Simply put, what defines good acting as opposed to bad acting? Feel free to write essays or even just a sentence, whatever gets your point across! Here’s some questions to possibly prompt your input: Do you think that good acting is dependant on the script? Does acting reflect that of the script itself or is the emotion purely from the actor? Is timing the key to it all? Is miscasting a factor - can actors be good at only certain roles? Can overacting still be “good”? I am fully aware that acting is an art and art is subjective but I’d like to hear what you think personally.
Who do you think the best 20 something actors are currently?
I don’t see any posts so far about this and only found a few Quora answers but I would like more perspective. One CD on Quora said “it’s not a problem until it is”. Another actor said people are always looking at it. Should I mention it in the casting room and say I have moved past that phase of harm a long time ago and don’t want them to worrry about it?. And I suppose that meant roles will be very limited no matter what? Btw, I’m medium dark skinned Latina and my 2 scars are obvious because they’re not only white, they’re raised and wide. I also have some that are very thin small keloids. And I mean thin as paper cuts, but unfortunately also raised. I call them tiger stripes because of the pattern of the paper thin scars The 2 fat ones are the ones I loathe I put on foundation but it does nothing because they’re raised up so it’s just too obvious I’m be honest, I’m not ready to act yet because I’m in treatment for my mental health But once better, In terms of “ type”I think I would be cast with or without scars, as a working class person, mom, or a jaded angry, or “crazy” woman of sorts. I say this because I know what it’s like to be mentally unwell so I’ll still be able to know how to be that way if a character has issues like that. Plus I think will always be a bit jaded and can easily access anger when needed. I’m not pretty either. I have been told I have intense crazy eyes, like a shark. So basically I’m hoping in time when I am stable that my scars could just blend in with the characters I’ll try to play but if it’s going to get in the way no matter what I would like to know to so I can just give up on this dream and move on to something else
I just finished my degree in Mathematics and thought to myself I actually do not enjoy this and could see myself an an actor in the long-term of my life as I've taken part in school theatre and small team films over the years. I thus was wondering do I need to get a degree in acting to somewhat be taken "serious" and if not or if so what else things would I need to do to kinda build a better portfolio as an unemployed 21 year old in London.
I'm not an actor, but the craft behind it interests me. Here's the relevant quote from [a Men's Health profile](https://www.menshealth.com/entertainment/a29413239/sterling-k-brown-age-longevity-interview/): >Brown went to grad school for drama at NYU—where, apparently, being the strong man on campus had less value. “My teachers told me to stop lifting weights,” he says. “I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ And they were like, ‘It’s gonna be hard for things to pass through you with all this musculature. So for emotion, for feelings to flow through, you have to be a vessel, a sieve, rather than something that is heavily armored.’ ” Can someone put this into layman's terms for me? I want to say that by trying to be huge, he was preventing himself from projecting any true vulnerability, but I know that's not the full story.
Say they get 3,000 submissions on actors access and have to narrow it down to about 50 actors they want to see self-tapes from, are they mostly going off of headshots? Or do they take the time to actually watch. Just curious!
Central casting is looking for background actors for a show called CAVIAR. Does anyone know what that show is? I can’t find it anywhere.
I’m in high school and I auditioned for theater class and I’m sure I made the cut but I feel like when I “act” I’m reading off of a script and emotionally I’m not there it feels like I’m some Disney channel actor off of a corny show or a special guest appearance actor from the NBA with horrid i acting
The series follows a Family of Skunk Apes, living their life in the Florida Everglades.Heavily influenced by Family guy (Seasons 1 through 3) and Sitcoms like Family Matters/Full House.Actress must be okay with playing a character some might consider a stereotype. The character is just a funny cartoon cryptid and while influenced by southern hospitality no racist intent was put into her creation. The character can be seen here at 2:49[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-t0Eh0k8Ok&t=354s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-t0Eh0k8Ok&t=354s) Can pay 2 dollars per line!
I have callback for a professional musical theatre gig this Saturday. And I can feel myself mentally self-sabotaging. Throughout the pandemic, I've had a few auditions and self-tape requests, but have truthfully been on a break for a while. I'm usually a straight-play/film actor, and haven't done a musical since I was 14, but I also just don't feel talented enough to book a professional gig, and have psyched myself out during most auditions. My life has been a little all over the place: I gave my two-weeks at my day-job so I could pursue acting full-time, and was asked to stay a few extra weeks so I could help with a temporary change-over. I thought this wouldn't be a huge issue, especially since I still planned on leaving early, but I feel like I have so much less time to prep myself for the callback, and I'm pretty mad at myself for making the decision to stay. How do you get through the murkiness and self-doubt and try to do the best you can possibly do?
After years of “hoping” to some day become a voice actor, I finally decided to take a first step and record/upload my first Voice Acting attempt clip. It started when I first heard Troy Baker’s lines for Pain in Naruto Shippuden (which ended up being what I mimicked in my recording). I was completely mesmerized. It wasn’t just his voice which was absolutely stunning for this character, it was the presentation. I remember feeling blown away by the power and emotion put into a specific speech by Pain (Naruto fans will know which I’m talking about). Years of jokingly doing funny voices, secretly doing serious voices in private, and then finally telling my longtime girlfriend of this dream, she convinced me to record a video and post it. After a mix of positive and constructive feedback from friends, I’m finally ready to continue educating myself and improving myself in this area. Thanks for taking a sec to read :) TL;DR I talked into a mic and uploaded it.
Current college student deciding if I should take a course with a renowned, well-respected acting teacher (ex. faculty experience at American Conservatory Theater + Stanford), at my non-performing arts related university or should I just take classes outside of school focused on on-camera acting if I'm pursuing film/TV work? I've taken 2 classes from my uni which were a good intro to acting, but I noticed that it gave me some dramatic tendencies that don't translate well to on-screen acting. I've worked hard with LA on-camera studio classes to fix these habits, but I'm afraid that my acting is now pretty subtle for the liking of theater teachers. Looking at successful actors though, I've noticed a lot of them had conservatory style, strict theater training so I'm wondering if focusing on theater will give me those skills because I truly just want to be the greatest actor I can be even without all the extra gimmicks, audition tricks etc. TLDR; take classes with famous acting professor at my university (strict plays, not on-camera), or enroll in on-camera classes outside of school instead? (can't do both because of time)
Use this thread to post your headshots for feedback, get info on your age range/type, find good headshot photographers, ask any questions you may have about headshots. If you are posting a DIY headshot for feedback, and not just a snapshot in order to get feedback on your age range/type/etc, it is advised that you do at least some basic research on what actor headshots look like--composition, framing, lighting. You will find a Google Image search for "actor headshots" to be very helpful for this. Non-professional shots are fine for age/typecasting; please keep in mind that one picture is a difficult way to go about this. Video of you moving and speaking would be ideal, but understandably more difficult to post. For what it's worth, the branding workshop at SAG-AFTRA recommends a five-year age range. That's inclusive, so for example 19-23, 25-29, 34-38, etc.
Hey, im an 18 year old voice actress looking for hire and all the sites im finding either have memberships, are way to scammy or just dont live up to Fiverr. Im sick of the Fiverr buyer pool at this point, their service isnt that great and there's alot of things about their company structure and how they treat sellers v. buyers that puts me off. Does anyone know of anyone who is either looking for a voice actress or a legit site where i dont have to pay to have an account or use it? >.> I've been voice acting for 2 years now, worked on tonnes of different YouTube projects, the unity library, business adverts and AI voices, even an audiobook! I just cant seem to find a consistent client pool, somewhere i dont have to worry about the "safe site" taking money from my bank without my knowledge \*cough\* freelancer \*cough\*. If anyone can help that'd be wonderful! <3 thanks for reading
Three years ago I auditioned for one of the biggest casting directors in Hollywood. Don’t wanna mention name but this person is a big deal and in the top 5 CD in Hollywood. She loved me immediately when I auditioned for her, and I booked a role in the movie. The producers for the movie are also some of the biggest names in the industry. A couple of weeks after booking it, she brought me in for another movie, this one a huge block buster. I was really living the dream that I had been chasing for the past 10 years. Fast forward a month later, just before filming starts, I wake up by my agent saying that the producers have rescinded my role because the negotiations got too heated. And the fucked up thing is that I didn’t even know the negotiation was going on. Afterwards, reading the email negotiations, I came to the conclusion that the negotiating producers was a real asshole and my agent was a little stupid too. However, since then, she completely went silence on me. She did say she was sorry for what happened and that she was “determined to get me more auditions”. But that never happened. And it hurts me so much. I got reminded about it just now and it honestly kinda brings tears to my eyes. I wish I could tell her that I didn’t even know about the negotiations and that I didn’t care how much money I would’ve gotten. I have a feeling that she must be thinking that I was greedy. Even though the contract problem was more than just money, which is why I understood my agent a little. My BFF always says “send her a post card” but what’s the point? I didn’t need to send a post card when she called to bring me in for the second movie. And when she praised me to my reps. She knows where I am. I don’t want to be that type of actor who chases desperately. I just wish she knew that I would’ve done the movie for free if it was so because I couldn’t care less about the money. I wonder if she’ll ever see me again.
Any actors here feeling lost post COVID? It feels such a barren time for me: without agent or any work lined up. Anyone else feeling this? What are people doing to get out of their slumps? (Sorry for the self-indulgent whinge).
These can be anything. It could be wishing you could get feedback from CDs personally. Or putting self-tape after self-tape into the 'void' and wondering if they've gotten seen. Or understanding the logistics of navigating Tik Tok/Influencers being represented by Sag-Aftra now.
So I’m recently out of acting school and I’m in NYC and I’m like wtf? What do I do now? I was told “bro, you gotta meet casting directors!” And I’m like ok. How do I do that? I can’t afford to keep throwing money at oneonone and actors connection for a passing glance. I’m just curious if any one has any hot takes or advice. Should I just cold email cds I want to work with? I don’t know any working actors really so I don’t have anybody to ask. Help meeeeeee...thanks!
Hi! I am an actor who is going into more voice over work. I looked into edge studio and am interested in taking their private lesson. Anyone have any good or bad experiences with them? Thank you all!
I'm really confused on which format I should use for my resume. Is there like a singular format for all acting resumes or like a format that most actors use (in like film and professional settings)? Thanks for your help! :)
Hi all, we just launched an app called "ActLike" (Android only for the moment) and we thought it would be very interesting for the acting community: [ActLike - Strike a pose 4 times - Apps on Google Play](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.actlike.app) The idea is very simple and fun: 4 selfies are taken in a row with a timer and a random pose indicated at the bottom of the screen. You need to strike each pose on camera as best as you can! There are 4 levels of difficulties, the hardest being "Actor Studio", dare trying! There is also a nice little collage of your 4 poses at the end of each session and you can share the results. We really hope you like it, and any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Aurel & Popy from ActLike
Hello everyone! My name is Mauricio, and a couple of months ago, I posted on this channel looking for a small group of actors who would be willing to join me in a web series I wrote about the perks and drawbacks of working remotely. After many months of work, we are finally launching, Remote Works, a web series about working remotely as a Kickstarter campaign: [https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mauricio-costa/remote-works-the-web-series](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mauricio-costa/remote-works-the-web-series) It has a sitcom/mockumentary appeal, and I would love to hear any feedbacks you may have. Also, if you really liked to watch other episodes, see character arcs and stories developing within Remote Works, consider backing our project on Kickstarter :)
I received a cmail requesting a callback for a tape I sent in (this was a self-submit, not thru my agent). However, they aren’t requesting a live eco cast CB ift seems? They’re just requesting another tape, but there are no instructions or notes on what they want me to change or what they liked etc. Is there a way for me to message them? The only way I’ve ever been able to send a message via cmail is if they actually message me first, not through the tape request message. This might be confusing lol but my question is: should I contact the casting office or would that be gauche? I have their info from their website and they didn’t say anything in the breakdown or tape request about “no calls or emails.” Thanks!
Hey all, How have you been doing with virtual auditions and having a good reader on hand? Is it your friend, bf/gf/ spouse? Do you ever have a hard time getting a good reader? I became curious about this after I had a semi-big audition and I could only get it done with my wife, who is not an actor. Made me appreciate having a good reader to play off of, and how auditioning with a cold/expressionless reader at a real audition is a skill set of it's own! It would be nice if there was a community based service that we could draw from to get readers, I don't think this era of virtual auditions is going away anytime soon.
Our agent is very adamant about not releasing audition/booking info for projects on social media. I haven't dealt with this but is it best to just no say anything till you get the greenlight to do so after post production? Also, is it best to wait till after it airs to release pics taken on set with other actors from he project or is this also considered breaking NDA? I don't use social very often but realize how easy it is to break NDA if you do decide to post certain things. Thanks!
Hey everyone! ❤️ I’m looking for actors/actresses that wants to meet up, rehearse ,exchange info , maybe even collaborate and enjoy this craft together. I’m based in LA. Covid made this entire business even more confusing for me...a complete noob. I think its always nice to have people who share same goals to push each other forward. Don’t know how i managed to live in LA for two years without knowing a single aspiring/working actors but here we are ! Took Stella Adler online but its really not the same... I’m 24yo female and as the headline says would love to meet some like-minded people. For those who find it important-I’ve been vaccinated Feel free to comment or DM me
Hi! I'm 16F and I live in Markham, Ontario. I've always wanted to be an actress since I was little, it's my dream job. It just seems so fun. Every time I watch movies, I always think about how fun it was to film them and I always catch myself envying other actors/actresses' lives because it just seems so fun. I regret not asking my mom to take me to acting classes when I was little. I remember being 10 and watching YouTube videos of how some actors started out and all of them started acting at like age 4 or something and had rich parents, so I thought I couldn't start at 10 (plus I only live with my mom who's tight on money). Looking back, 10 wasn't even late. I need to decide ASAP what career path I want, since I'll be graduating high school in a year and I need to send out applications for universities in the fall. I have no idea what I want to do with my life and when I'm looking through websites for potential career paths, I always think about how the job is so boring and how acting would be so much more fun. I just don't know what to do since my mom wants me to go to university and get a decent paying jobs, but most actors do not blow up when they start out, so instead of making loads of money like my mom wants, I'd probably be tight on money. The city I live in also has like no acting gigs, I live near Toronto, so maybe I could find stuff there, but I just don't know where to start. Also, a big reason I have done no acting at all yet is because I have A LOT of social anxiety. I mean, I have loads of anxiety in general, but my social anxiety is through the roof and I'm super awkward when I interact with people that I'm not close to. I think I'd be fine if I went to acting classes and I'll eventually get over it a bit, but I'm also super scared of judgement from others, so I'm scared to ask my mom about it. My mom is an immigrant and wants her kids to have good jobs and be successful, but my grades are REALLY BAD while my sister (9 years older than me) is an engineer. They know how much social anxiety I have, so they'd probably just laugh at me and say stuff like "you think you can do acting when you're scared to order food at McDonalds?" Also, everyone I know would know that I'm doing acting stuff and it's just scary for me cause I feel like they'd judge me? If I do decide to peruse acting, should I go to like university and take an acting program there? Or should I just take some acting classes and just start doing stuff as soon as I can? I'm just lost and yeahhh idkkkk. Sorry that this is long and all over the place. I just threw up all of my thoughts, but please let me know what you think I should do. Thank you!!
Guys I’m a new actor right now I can’t take classes but I want to practice acting in some form to get better.. anyone know of acting exercises to do alone? Plz help me I really want to get better at acting but I’m gonna have to wait a while due to issues I don’t control in order to take a class but I’m anxious and just want to have acting exercise to do
Guys I just read and took notes for An Actor Prepares I’m gonna be honest I’m a bit disappointed cause it got confusing at some points .. the info to me is hard to digest in some points.. I planned on reading the next stanislavski book but I’m honestly not looking forward to it. Is there any alternatives for me who is a beginner to get clear cut answers in a book?
Hey peeps! 18m / I’m last year high school student and so interested in biology but what i love the most and had a bit of experienced (w some appreciations but not really care about any of them and know they’re probably not important for like being a good actor atm). I know how is it for people trying to be a great actor and many can’t just make it. I just thought of biology as a backup plan for my life. Just wanted to ask is there anyone who studied major in biology(or other related field like neuroscience for example) and dropped it or got a degree and pursue acting? Is it possible? Is it hard to like study in this such field and think about acting too? Can it be a backup plan for your life?
Edit 1: can’t a person just teach themselves about acting and how to act.
I feel like I have a 3rd class citizen acting journey, with crappy reps that get me auditions so infrequently I don't even feel like an actor. how are you ever supposed to make progress when people with good reps are auditioning all the time? it just doesn't make sense to me. I have no idea how to spend my time to get ahead or make any kind of tangible progress in my "career" at this point. if you can even call whatever this is a career. it feels like a big joke. I'm just tired doing everything I can think of and getting no where with this. I know every actors journey is different, but good agents are good agents and they are the ones that get actors a career. crappy agents are worthless. it just sucks so much
okay so i’m fairly new to this subreddit as i just discovered how interested i was in acting. up until a month ago, whenever i was asked what i wanted to be when i was older, my answer was always a pediatrician. i’m good in math and science, particularly chemistry for which i’ve studied for 3 years through college level programs (for reference- i’m 17). i always said that yet i knew in the back of my head that i really had no passion to be a pediatrician whatsoever and even the thought of being one terrified me (basically treating someone, prescribing things— it felt like a huge responsibility of having someone’s life in your hands that i was never fond of). anyways, recently i rewatched one of my favorite series with my favorite actress and realized i found myself always thinking about the behind the scenes, putting myself into the actor’s shoes about how they’d say things before they did with a huge camera in front of them, and just about the whole process in general. now, i’ve always been intrigued by the film/tv industry but i never really thought much of it. the idea of taking on a new character/persona excites me and so does working on a set with other people and bringing the characters to life. all of it really excites me— from being behind the camera or in front of it, however i really think being in front of it is where i lean more towards. i like it so much that i really want to be an actress when i’m older. i find myself thinking about it everyday and i know it’s soon of me to say that, but i just now payed attention to something that was always there. i also find the actual film aspect of it to be interesting, but not AS much as i do acting. i enjoy editing things as well and the idea of filming a tv show/movie is something that attracts my eye as well. so, as i discovered this new interest of mine, i’m conflicted on a number of things: 1. how do i tell my mom i want to pursue acting? i feel like she’ll be disappointed in me and laugh in my face. 2. i have no clue how to get into acting. i wouldn’t even know where to start and money is tight right now (however, my uncle is a successful producer in LA and has produced many shows for popular networks and streaming services. i shared with him my new interest in both film and acting— i focused more on the film part because i was afraid of his reaction to acting— and he said he’d love to speak with me and offer me some advice so i plan on doing that soon) 3. do you go to college for acting? i want to have a degree i can fall back on if it doesn’t work out so i don’t know if going to school for acting is necessary (failure— in anything— is my biggest fear) if i had to choose between the two, i would definitely choose acting over the film aspect to it. in my head i’ve come up with the plan to major in film (not really sure yet— got to talk to my uncle about that one and see what he says and what he majored in in college) and pursue acting outside of it. not sure if that’s realistic any help or tips or advice towards my situation is appreciated!
I’ve been pondering and doing some research into a show about Commercials. There are so many actors that make commercials that are so much a part of our lives, and I’m trying to think of a way to tell their stories (most likely your stories, too!) I think it would look like a reality show and introduce actors and actresses going through the phases of making commercials, and include the writers who write them too. When I watch a commercial, I think of who came up with the idea for it, of writers fleshing out ideas and the actors who give it life. Each commercial is a project and it’s amazing to think of what went into them! I have zero experience writing for TV. Do you good folks think this idea has merit?
I’m an established actor but being a producer is something that I’d really love to become. But do you see it as a conflict of interest? For example, I would say being a casting director and actor is a conflict of interest, especially if you’re casting yourself. I’m not looking for right or wrong answers, just opinions here! Thank you. Edit: I know that there are lots of actor/producers out there, but many of those seem to be in the top 1% of the industry and have so much wealth it’s not an issue.
Hi, I've been looking into acting schools in Aus. Is there a difference between NIDA, WAAPA and Actor's Centre in terms of BFA in Acting? Any recommendations for their short courses? If you've attended any, could you share your experiences?
I'm a working actor, mostly TV & commercials, and I did one high profile video game project several years ago (mocap and face, with voice). There was a cast of several hundred, so I'm sure I'm not the easiest to find, but after acting in several scenes (including a monologue) and recording a few hundred lines as well, I expected SOMEONE to see me (someone being gamer nephews & nieces, friends, etc). Those folks who know me have kept their eyes and ears out for me, but to no avail. I'd love to get some footage of myself just for kicks. Anyone with more experience with this have had any luck? The expansive NDA keeps me from specifically describing the scenes I was in. Thanks!
I'm an ex-actor and I miss it a lot. I don't have time to commit to actual performances and all the work that leads up to it but I would love the ability to do table readings or even run lines with people. Is there a way to do that? Like a group or community, I can sign up with to do it? Preferably virtual.
I would like to improve my general speech for on-camera acting and I thought I’d come to this community since Voice Actors are constantly in front of a mic and making sure they express lines clearly. I dabble with tongue twisters but I feel like it isn’t enough. Thank you guys!
Weeee, you found me!
I'm your buddy Bottie, I was hiding behind the scenes, but now that you've found me I'd be happy to tell you what I'm doing.
I just wrote a few fun facts about Web For Actors
