How to hire people?

How to hire people?

Posted on Feb 24th

Hi, I'm an indie game dev working on my 2nd game, and I'm considering adding voice acting to it once the script is done and implemented ( so, most probably in a few years ). However, I have absolutely no clue where I can hire people and how expensive it can get. I'm not looking for extremely professional actors, Anyone who can act emotions pretty well and doesn't peek their mic would do the trick. Hell, if I were English I probably would've asked my friends and family to do it. Any help would be very appreciated!

I (14M) think I want to be an actor but I don't know what to do. I know I'd have to tell my parents to actually start doing anything, but I want to be sure that this is what I want to do with my life first. I haven't even tried much or anything like that yet but I want to at least try it. Idk whenever I feel like I could possibly do it, my brain keeps coming up with reasons why I can't do it or shouldn't even try. I don't even know if I'll be any good at it.. Don't actors sometimes go for a year or more without having a role? Here's an intro into the absolute mess that is my thoughts ig- Hopefully some of that made sense.

Long self-tapes with short deadlines

Long self-tapes with short deadlines

Posted on Feb 24th

I recently got a self tape tonight (Wednesday) with 13 pages, 3 scenes (roughly 4-6 pages per scene and the deadline is Friday Morning. I don’t know if anyone else is finding this, but I’m finding it really hard to learn long scenes in such a short space of time. How quickly can people normally learn scenes, film, edit and send? I feel like there’s never any consideration for the actors and its just throw everything at the them and we want it by Friday. I know now I’ve just received this I’m going to be up until 2am tonight trying to learn at least 2 of the scenes so I can film them tomorrow leaving one for Friday morning. But thats not going to be indepth work. It’s just going to be enough time to learn the lines, add some intentions behind each of the lines and wing it! BUT, I want to do my best work and learn the lines analyse the scenes, more spend time with the character. Obviously I don’t mean to the point of as if I already had the Job, but just enough that I can feel like I made this scene my own and not just learnt the lines and said them on tape. But I barely have time to just get the lines down and film them all. Or is a self tape literally learn lines and send? What do you guys think? Is it just, shut up and get on with it, or is it fair to be feeling like this???

Hard rule for takes. Don't stop!

Hard rule for takes. Don't stop!

Posted on Feb 24th

I've been told this by casting agents and now in the time of self taping, I reaffirmed for myself. I stopped toward the end of a take cuz I thought I did a line with the wrong energy. Imagine my dismay when as I was editing, my partner and I both said "This is absolutely the perfect take!" Of course it was the take I stopped at the end of. I think the take I sent was fine, But I do this myself and I,ve seen other actors sabotage what's a very good take. Let those little happy accidents happen and remember, we're not always the best judge of what's good why we're doing it. That's for the objective eye of the camera to decide.

Union v. Nonunion post-pandemic: pros and cons?

Union v. Nonunion post-pandemic: pros and cons?

Posted on Feb 24th

So this is specifically about AEA: but if anyone has insight to sister unions I’m sure it would be helpful to somebody out there too. When the pandemic hit I was a theatre actor with 45 EMC weeks, and an upcoming contract that would take me Equity at the end of 2020. That contract was postponed, and while it hasn’t been cancelled yet, I’m not counting my chickens. So I’m wondering if anyone has thoughts or insight on whether to bite the bullet and join AEA now, since I’m eligible & auditions are just barely starting up, or whether I should still stick it out for a last couple of nonunion contracts. I feel like joining would give me a little boost now, but at the same time, I’d be happy to do one last EMC contract if it meant I had a better chance of working sooner. Any hypotheses on whether AEA members will have more opportunities than non-? Or maybe there will be so much competition that keeping my options open will be the better choice? For casting context, I’m 27F & white, so there are plenty of “me” out there who will be up for similar roles. TIA for your input!

I know men don’t get these breakdowns through LACasting, but for us girls, we are constantly getting “gold digger” roles to submit too. For those of you that aren’t familiar... it’s the “real women, not actors” videos, in which a dude approaches a girl and asks her out, and she says no. And then he pulls up in his fancy sports car and she’s all over him. Then he rejects her, calls her a gold digger, and drives off. These videos are always by douchey YouTube “pranksters” and pay a measly $20-$50. I wish LA casting would ban these sort of breakdowns, but I know that would be asking “too much” from them. The monthly/yearly bare minimum subscription fee is too high for me to constantly be getting these trashy castings in my inbox. Okay rant over. :)

It’s basically interactive improv theatre but still, I’m worried people might not take it seriously at all. I just want to get my ball rolling and get an agent sooner than later. I know some microphones pick up certain ranges better than others so it just makes things a little confusing on decision making. My acting reel is in my bio if that helps figure out what microphone fits best. A reason behind your suggestion is always appreciated too! :)

Rant: Crappy Low Budget Projects

Rant: Crappy Low Budget Projects

Posted on Feb 24th

I'm non-union in a small market and auditions have been scarce during COVID. When I do find auditions, the projects suck! I'm not even talking about the storyline, I'm talking about the dang script. So much is expected of us as actors (make sure to self-tape this way, create a reel that way, memorize the lines for your self-tape, etc.) and these damn scripts don't even have proper grammar. I put so much care into my work and my emails—God forbid I forget to re-read them a few times to make sure I didn't miss a word or make a typo—and people are out here sending scripts that are missing periods at the end of sentences, missing words, improper script formatting... COME ON! If you expect me to do my job, then do yours. Maybe I need to start creating my own projects lol. End rant.

I have acting experience, no idea for what classes to take, and wanting to make a demo reel.

I had no idea what to title this exactly, so let me explain. I also apologize in advance if this is answered somewhere. I am struggling and have been for a long time as to what “classes” I should be taking for voice acting. I know that there’s plenty of resources out there, and that there’s not exactly a need for formal education such as college or university for me to acquire in order to get into voice acting. However, I do not understand how many classes I should be taking, which ones are worth the time and money, and how many classes I should take in order to take the next step— a demo reel. All I can really add to this is that I practiced and studied improv with UCB (United Citizens Brigade) and Second City several times, and have performed improv comedy and acting for the last four years. For whatever that is worth, maybe it could paint a picture of where I stand as an actor of any degree. I’m not exactly asking for like, specific classes for me to take or what business I should go to. I just need a general idea what I should do at this point. I’ve been practicing voice acting for the past year but I feel stuck. People always say you should take classes, but I don’t want to pour money into something I have no idea if it’s going to be pushing me in the right direction. TL;DR- I have some experience in acting, and have been practicing voice acting for a year now. I don’t know what I should be doing as far as classes are concerned, and how many I should be taking before I can finally move toward a demo reel. Thank you for any and all advice!

How important is sex appeal when trying to become successful?

How important is sex appeal when trying to become successful?

Posted on Feb 23rd

I've observed the acting world of both today and decades past. It always seems like the actors who truly make it to the top share one common attribute - powerful sex appeal. More than talent, looks, age, luck, connections and hard work; sexuality and attractiveness seem to be the qualities that elevate an actor. Here are some examples: Marilyn Monroe (famous due to her nude photos and played sexy roles.) Marlon Brando (muscular body.) James Dean Madonna (always used her sexuality.) Sylvester Stallone (made a porno before "Rocky.") Brad Pitt (took his shirt off and became a star.) Julia Roberts (played a sexy hooker when she started out.) Channing Tatum (was an actual stripper before he was an actor.) Megan Fox (need I say more?) Noah Centineo (every girl in America went crazy over him.) There are countless other examples. Also, although not actresses, who can forget Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton? Two entertainers who launched careers and built empires solely using sex. It seems like if all these people didn't become movie stars they would've just chosen to become porn stars. Of course we have the Meryl Streeps and Daniel Day-Lewis' who nobody is really drooling over but very few actors have that level of raw talent. What do you guys think?

What do you use for embedding your demos on your website?

Posted on Feb 23rd

Does anyone use VoiceZam? It looks great and clients can download demos directly from the widget, but it's $9/mo and I'm trying to keep costs low. Currently I'm using Soundcloud, but to be honest, Soundcloud files look like garbage on mobile unless listeners have the app. I think it's good to have demos on Soundcloud anyway for clients to find me, just not as an embedding tool. Other widgets I should look at? My website (lowest payment plan) doesn't have audio embedding unless I upgrade. (I know it's dumb, I've had my website for many years and signed on with this platform before I became a fulltime voice actor). If I have to, I'll pay to upgrade, or get a VZ sub, but there's gotta be a cheaper way that still looks professional, right? Not sure about video, since Youtube now has the right to place ads on your material (is that correct?) and clients can't download your demo if they want. Maybe Vimeo is better? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I RARELY use Reddit, so pardon me if this kind of post is not common. (´ω`\*) I am looking to start a home studio for voice acting. I am trying to create a set-up that would work for Youtube videos, podcasts, and voiceovers for ACX. I am a beginning voice actress, so I'd like to have a good setup to begin my journey! This all being said, what microphone would you recommend? My price range is $150-$400. I have heard Studio Project mics are both inexpensive and good quality, but I've also heard that Rodes are good as well. Or is there something else that is far better than these two & in my budget? Any other advice would be sincerely appreciated! (Including other places to begin aside from ACX, etc.)

Here’s a fun one. I auditioned with a self tape for a role on a show. The casting company asked for my availability but that same days, the role went back up on Actor’s Access. It’s been a few weeks (almost a month) and the description says I need to be available for the next month or so but I’m not sure if this means that I got the role or not. The role hasn’t been archived yet so perhaps they haven’t found anyone? My hair is getting longer and getting a bit cumbersome but I also don’t want to have it cut to leave options in case it does go through. Thoughts?

I don’t know why, but I feel like Cage washes himself out really fast in his big roles. Anything where he has less than say 20 minutes of screen time I find myself enjoying his quirkiness and mannerisms, I just think he’s a little too ‘goofy’ for me to enjoy his major roles. Thought about this after watching National Treasure for the 398th time last night.

When did you know it was time to turn Equity?

When did you know it was time to turn Equity?

Posted on Feb 23rd

I'm an EMC actor who is currently sitting at 25 points. I've put a good amount of thought into when I eventually want to turn, but I don't think I want to do it super soon. My logic has been that I want to get a good amount of non-union/union credits on my resume first and try to become more of a known name in my local theater scene, someone who pops into the local casting directors' heads early on when they're thinking of people to bring in for shows (thus possibly bypassing EPAs altogether.) The problem is, I don't know if I know what a 'good amount' of credits is. I think I'm on track (at least I was pre-pandemic) of becoming more well-known in my local theater scene. But, even still, I'm not sure I know when I'll feel 'known enough' or in the 'right place' to join. My instinct is to stay EMC as long as humanly possible, since it really is the sweet spot between doing union and non-union work, but I also don't want to stay EMC so long as to eventually cheat myself out of any Equity opportunities. I'm also turning 26 in a couple months and will kinda need health insurance... Those of you who have turned, when did you know it was the right time? And those of you who are waiting like I am, is there a specific moment you're looking for to turn? Thanks so much!

Self-confidence: is it an illusion or is it a requirement for success as an actor?

Posted on Feb 23rd

I could just be seeing it wrong, so definitely correct me, but it seems like a lot of well known actors (and maybe successful people in general) believe in themselves and have a considerable amount of self-confidence. It could just be the social media effect, but I’ve come to the realization that the only thing stopping me from achieving my goals is myself. I’m even terrified to do this upcoming improv class because I’m scared of being seen, but I’m going to do it anyway. Not sure if everyone has been through this along their journey to success, but I’m in the process of learning to love myself again (2020 was hell) and believing that I deserve to achieve my goals. Some say the confidence comes a little bit with each experience, some say that you need it from the beginning, some even say that nobody is as confident as they seem. What are your thoughts? Have you gotten out of your own way, and if so, how has that helped your journey? Really interested in starting this discussion because we often times are looking too inwardly.

Hey y'all so I've found a whole lot about Austin acting studios but not too much about Dallas. What are your thoughts and opinions? I'll list a few just to put out what I've seen/visited around here: Glenn Morshower with The Extra Mile, Nancy Chartier, Michele Condrey with REACT Studios, Michelle Sherrill, Theresa Bell. Any of these ladies/guys stand out to you in particular? To me acting classes are about helping the actor explore and play with their relationship with acting and that the teacher is there to guide you at their best. There are really wonderful actors who know how to explain acting tools but then there are really great teachers who see through you and clearly see what holds you back and they are able to help you see this and help you push through your individual obstacle. What do y'all think?

Resume layout and starting out

Resume layout and starting out

Posted on Feb 22nd

This is a very common question. I Ireland and I’m extremely eager to start out in acting. I want to focus on film and TV. But during these unprecedented times it’s tough. So I thought I’d take this time to do a load of research and practice so I will be prepared for when I start to audition. First things first, I plan on taking classes as soon as they’re back open. (due to COVID-19 it could be another month or two) This will help me tremendously but I have some more queries. I want to make a really confident resume because I am a confident person so I need it to portray that on paper. I have some extremely unique skills such as doing a backflip, surfing and even playing rugby at a high level. I want to include all these in my resume along with the list of accents I can do very well, well and average. What’s the best way/layout I could portray all this ? I’m an actor who’s just starting out but I’ve always had a passion for ‘acting’. I was cast as the main character in my school play when I was younger, have experience in school musicals etc. I do not have an agent as of yet but I plan on signing up for actors access. Which brings me to my second question, what’s the best website/way to get self submitting roles? Finally, I’d say I would be most similar to Tom Cruise, I actually look quite a bit like him (young Tom), I would love to do my own stunts and I’m not the tallest either hahahaha. So what roles should I focus on. (Of course I’ll audition for any role that fits roughly my description, but I want to really focus on certain roles, and Tom Cruise is a good comparison for me as of now.) Finally, I genuinely appreciate anyone who took time out of their day to read this. You truly don’t know how much it means to me.

Suppose someone wanted to be a full-time background actor. They have no interest in being a regular actor whatsoever, they just want to do background work. They're also able to join SAG and they do. Would it be hard to get enough background work to meet SAGs requirements for health insurance? I don't mean right now with the pandemic. I'm talking about 2022 and onward once things are more back to normal. For purposes of this question they live in Los Angeles, CA. Here's some more information in case it affects your answer. They're a middle aged, white, fairy unattractive male with absolutely no special talents that would provide bonus pay (such as singing, dancing, surfing, owning a classic car, having a pet they can bring, etc).

not sending in self-tapes you aren't happy with

Posted on Feb 22nd

just venting here and sharing my experience I finally got an audition after months of not having anything. For some reason, it came out so awful. I was overacting, not focused, and dumbed down my performance. It's probably because I was so excited to be doing a self-tape that I self-sabatoged. I hate that as actors we feel pressure to send something in whether we feel good about it or not. I don't know whether it's a fear of disappointing the agent/manager, the casting director, or what. But I definitely sent in a bad tape simply because I felt like I had to. Next time I'm going to give myself the freedom to decide whether or not I'm happy with what I'm sending in. And if I'm not, I won't. For whatever reason sometimes things just don't click. We're human. In the end it's better to send nothing in and protect the casting director's image of you than it is to send something shitty in and have them remember you as someone who didn't deliver/not bring you in again. As for this last one, Hopefully the cd will see how bad it is within the first few seconds and stop watching! ha

However, I have no plans to go back to the UK. When it's viable to do so (COVID etc.) I'll be going back to Ireland to look into the film/TV industry in Dublin. Is there a Spotlight equivalent? I'm not sure where I can do better in my setup

Posted on Feb 22nd

Hey there! I'm sure the words "aspiring voice actor" have been said on here a million times as are the some of the things I'll be talking about here. The only difference between those and this post (hopefully) is that I've already done research, applied it, and still don't know where I am going wrong. Not to say there's a wrong way to do these things, but I am looking for a better way, and I hope you guys can help. So I don't have a ton of money, but I managed to buy off a Blue Yeti Nano from a friend which beat my Steel Series Arctic Pro headset microphone by a long shot. I know, I know, Blue Yeti isn't good for voice acting, but I did some research and for my DIY setup, it should work for me on a budget than an XLR mic that I'll need to get extra components for. My current setup up is to go into my closet with my clothes hanging up, set my laptop and mic on the wire racks, and drape a thick blanket over the top shelf so it covers down to about my waist with my mic facing towards me. I can get as close enough to kiss the mic and as far as about a foot away. I record using Audacity and OBS since for some reason Audacity record s it super soft. I tried messing with settings and making my own preset to try and make my voice sound cleaner, but besides calling an alt account on a Discord call and messing with the EQ and for some reason noise reduction, I don't see any improvements, just more muffling of my voice. I'm a bit new to Reddit so I don't know the proper way to put images here, so I'll copy-paste this and hope it works. Regardless, I do have an audio test just for you guys that may hopefully help. [https://youtu.be/0KQqvOxh4EE](https://youtu.be/0KQqvOxh4EE) I've been thinking of running my audio through Adobe Audition with virtual audio cables like VoiceMeter or something, but I haven't heard good things. My laptop has Nvidia Broadcasting, so I usually use its noise suppression to record, and in those cases, I get something that sounds like the "New Voices" upload on my Casting Call Club (Sorry for the shameless plug, youtube won't let me upload the mp3 and idk where else to post it for a link form for y'all): [https://www.castingcall.club/m/ArcadeAnimations](https://www.castingcall.club/m/ArcadeAnimations) Once again, I would appreciate any and all feedback, and sorry for such a long post. La casting/ casting networks is increasing its price from $16.95 to $25.95 per month!? How’s The pandemic been treating you? Better yet, how’s your career going now that you are one year older? Lots of new reel footage? Unless your Tiffany Haddish, the answer is you probably didn’t book much during the pandemic. Now that we see a light at the end of the tunnel, time to gouge our eyeballs! I don’t know, maybe I’m Covid salty, but actors are usually one month rent away from moving back into their parents garage. Why after all this, a huge price increase!? I’m diverting my screenplay to making casting networks the big bad! Rant over. Probably.

Not gonna lie, it's kind of hard to see 'actor audition tapes before they made it' and realize 99% of them are white and exceptionally attractive ppl

Saying no to non-speaking roles to get better opportunities?

Posted on Feb 22nd

I have mastered the non-speaking roles but have been struggling to get more speaking roles on professional productions (even though I get a lot of them on independent productions and do have a couple small speaking roles on professional productions). My acting teacher advised me to simply say no to the non-speaking roles that I am offered or negotiate an upgrade to make it clear that I am a professional actor who is only looking for speaking roles at the moment. That’s how he managed to get to the next level and it makes sense because I have gone through something similar in another aspect of my life and saying no really helped me. This is something I haven’t tried yet and I do believe that hanging on to smaller roles is what keeps me from moving forward to bigger roles. But at the same time, should I risk the only thing that I have at the moment? Did any of you make this sacrifice and got better opportunities after that? Or did you try this and now regret it? I want to know about it! Thank you!

Hi so I have a YouTube channel with over 12K subs and 2 million views, and I'd really want to interview these voice actors from this mini kids web series! I've been practiced my interviewing skills for a while now, and I think I'm ready for the real thing! However, I'm really unsure on how to approach them and was wondering if there was any advice on contacting them! \-If your wondering what the show is called, it's called Toca Life Stories

How to title clips?

How to title clips?

I have a demo reel on Actor’s Access but my manager just recommended that I upload clips instead. My entire reel is basically “dramatic”. Would I label each clip “drama” or specify exactly what they are? For example there’s one scene of me in a confessional with a priest revealing my mother’s sins. Another is me opening up to the girl I’m dating about my past. Also- how long should clips be? What is the standard? TIA

Even if you 'make it' have you really made it?

Like seriously. There is no job security whatsoever. Like even if you somehow bag a big role in some serial, years down the line when it's over, there's a solid chance you'll still be jobless. I mean whenever I look up the imdb of any actor after watching a movie or show they were in, I always find that the gap between their big break and starting point to be several years. Usually 10, and even then once they've 'made it', they dissappear after their breakout performance. It truly is a trying business.

Steps for Starting out, Toronto vs. Vancouver

Steps for Starting out, Toronto vs. Vancouver

Hey everyone.. I am 23 living in Toronto and am thinking about becoming an actress. I’ve always wanted to but due to the pressures of my parents I waited to finish school first. I think it’s time to go after my dreams. I have no idea where to get started so any advice or which acting schools to look into would help! I was also wondering if you guys had any thoughts on acting in Toronto vs. Vancouver? Is one better than the other in terms of opportunities?

Soooooo yeah, i think you probably all heard about this AI that automatically generates dubbing process in any language based on the original actor voice. What are your opinions about it? Do you think that it will ever kill off our work for good or every voice actor around the world will riot against it?

Hi all, as a newer VA on the scene I’m struggling with finding my character type

Hi all, as a newer VA on the scene I’m struggling with finding my character type

Tips appreciated. Ive been listening to my own voice, and the thing about *ME* hearing *my own voice* is that, it’s very difficult to hear it from a 3rd person perspective, and then, decide what types of characters my own voice would fit into. I’ve been trying to see what other actors i sound similar to, and the search is difficult. But I’m sure it would be easier for someone else to do it for me. since I don’t want to rely on others for everything, how do you think I could find these things on my own? Thank you for all the help Sincerely -Taco

*Firstly, I wanna tell you that I don't know anything about acting. I just had this question and came here.* I sometimes think that Heath Ledger recognition/success for playing the Joker in the movie Dark Knight is **partly** because of the character he had assigned to play (the Joker). Don't get me wrong, I think **the acting of Heath Ledger in that film is very good**. And I also know that he put a lot, a lot of effort into preparing for his role (In fact, he spent a month in a room preparing his character). But, I think that playing a character like the Joker gave them the opportunity to play a character that is extremely different to "a normal person", therefore a lot more fascinating and also that expresses a lot more of emotions. And that seems a great advantage respect playing a conventional character. Let's imagine that there are 2 actors (A and B). Actor A is asigned the role of playing a conventional cleaning lady who wants to abandon her job and loves her children (like most parents do). Actor B is asigned the role of playing a crazy psycopath who hates society. Even if the 2 actors put a lot of effort into their role (the same amount of effort) and they both have the same level of acting, it seems to me that actor B has A LOT more chances to be loved by the audience or even be praised for his/her acting. I know that the acting is important. But, is it possible that the character an actor plays could give them way more chances to the actor to really succeed or be loved by the general public (those who don't know about acting)?
