I have a noticeably crooked face. And it’s not just me saying that, like my upper and bottom lip don’t line up straight with each other. Can I still become an actor? This might be a dumb question but I want to know.
My career hasn’t even started yet and after introspection, it seems I’ve behaved liked an toxic unhinged harasser (purely platonic, nothing sexual) towards an actress friend. I can’t apologize to her since she’s blocked me. So, I know I’m being a navel-gazing selfish and self-centered person by saying this but ; should I give up on acting ? Cuz now I fear getting cancelled if I ever make it.
There are certain agencies (on my wish list) that I follow on Instagram to see what their clients are up to. They post a lot of "booked it" stories and posts on behalf of their clients. I like them because it makes me happy to see fellow actors booking. But I wanted to ask: will it affect my chances of signing with any of these agencies if I like their posts? I always thought that they'd want people to like their posts, and it's useful for me because if I want to get back to the post and research the show or the actor, it's easy to find.
Not huge on stage performances. I know a lot of these MFAs are for more stage acting. I'm planning to take an intro acting class at my local community college. I already have an undergraduate degree in an unrelated field.
So I found a role on Actors Access on a local film that is perfect for me! I submitted the day it was posted (today). I’m just starting out so I have no substantial reel so I did not submit any video, just a photo and description under “notes”. I did some research and found both the Casting Director and Casting Associate’s email. They’re names were listed on the posting. I know that hundreds of people are submitting for the same role, so would it be beneficial to email them today just reiterating my interest in the role? Is that generally favorable or looked down upon?
Ive been wanting to try out an acting studio to really push me and create a good connection with coaches, is there anywhere anyone can point me to? Ive been looking at The Young Actor's studio, The Ruskin School of acting, and Playhouse West.
Hello, I am new I've been reading the rules and, could I make a post announcing that I'm looking for voice actors to dub a clip? The job will be paid without any problem
Hello everyone!! New to the sub and looking for help. I'm from South America, work in the tech industry, and for 2 years now, everytime i've had time to reflect on my life my thoughts gravitate towards acting. In that time, i revisited this sub a thousand times, and i understand that i'm a beginner and if i want to enter the us market as a foreigner i must excel at the craft, get training, enough experience, apply for an 01 visa... That being said, i can work remotely, so moving out of my home country to pursue this urge aligns with other aspects of my life too, and since i have to get training anyway, might as well go to a place where i have more options/oportunities. So, i've been looking for places where i can get good training and experience, and the US is the first o the list (feel free to give me other suggestions). Now for the questions: Can i "work" on projects as a student/actor and get credits? Is there a way of staying in the US to further pursue acting after my training ends? And does that apply for non degree training programs (Stella Adler, NYCDA...)?
Let's take sadness. Most acting coaches tell you that the audience can see through fake tears and will know if you're not truly sad but merely faking sadness. But I think you can totally get away with just portraying an emotion. I've seen it happen. Actors just simply going through the motions of a certain emotion instead of actually feeling it. So basically all their work is external and focused on making certain movements, tonal inflections, facial expressions... But they're never actually in the state of mind of their character. I mean, there's this one famous actress who even openly admitted she doesn't produce her tears naturally. She just jawns without opening her mouth. So maybe you don't actually have to be connected to your character and can just fake it?
What to do as a high schooler Hello I am a 16M high schooler, I learned about a lot about acting. I am going to take acting clas in spring. I got 3 acting books, but if I wanna be a actor I wanna know where to go or to do because sitting and reading at doing much. Acting is a skill to practice, but how does some act or pretend
Hello fellow actors. I am currently a theater actor and in AP Research, this is my senior year of high school. My paper is regarding Discrimination in the Theater Industry, and through my literature review, I found a gap regarding the effects it has on mental health. I am conducting a survey to answer that gap. If you guys would like to fill out this 5-minute survey regarding how discrimination in theater has affected your mental health, it would be greatly appreciated! [https://forms.gle/QUtV6MgzhTzBcWiN8](https://forms.gle/QUtV6MgzhTzBcWiN8) Disclaimer: While this data will be anonymous, it will be used in my paper, and your taking the survey gives me your consent to use your data.
Hey everyone! My sister is starting her journey as an actress by getting into drama school, and I would like to support her with some present, buy I don’t know where to start. Are ideas? Maybe a very influential book on the field? Thank youu ✨
I hear that a lot of voice actors set up in a walk-in closet and while I do have one it would definitely be a pain to set up in, are the benefits worth it to do or is just working in my room fine or are there any alternatives.
Recently I've gotten some American network auditions for shows that shoot overseas. Has anyone done this in the last few years? Asking because a few years back I got slammed with foreign taxes for a role in a commercial that shot in Canada. It was an American spot but run by a Canadian production company. I'm guessing that a network show that shot overseas would still be run and therefore paid by the American production company, but I have in the past had to pay local state income taxes on income I made out of my home state. If I have a tax liability in the host country where the location is, I'd like to be prepared beforehand in case I'm faced with a contract to sign.
Hi r/acting! My name is Rick Ives, I have a 10 year history in post production with Marvel Studios, and am the writer/director of a new indie feature called [Solid Rock Trust.](https://i.imgur.com/653YK0i.jpg) With permission from the mods, we're going to be holding an AMA with the two lead actors of our film so you can ask them all the juicy questions you want about their work as artists in the film industry. If you'd like to see the film ahead of time, it's [free on Tubi](https://tubitv.com/movies/701273/solid-rock-trust) and available to [buy/rent on Amazon.](https://www.primevideo.com/detail/Solid-Rock-Trust/0K72Y2DFL4975L09YXQ8BL5976) The plot revolves around a single location bank heist, where our lead character played by Koko Marshall is pulling the strings of everything happening inside the bank from a remote location. You should really check out her performance, it's a real one-woman show to remember. It's big, it's small, she goes through an entire list of accents, languages, and emotions. I'll have a thread up that morning so you can ask anything you like and the three of us will be on in the afternoon for a few hours to answer as much as we can. [Trailer and more info on the film](https://linktr.ee/flashbulbfilms) [Koko Marshall IMDB.](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3726570/) Koko has starred in a number of indie features including Solid Rock Trust, The One You're With, A Perfect Host, and many more. [Alexander Hearth IMDB.](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm6582959/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1) Alexander has appeared in a handful of features, shorts, and TV series, and he most recently helped establish an acting school in New York. [Rick Ives IMDB.](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3546744/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1) Rick has been working in Post production for over a decade on films such as Avengers Infinity War, Endgame, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, and ongoing work on many Disney+ Marvel Series. Hot Tip: This is not the AMA thread. But you can comment here with "RemindMe! 2 Days" and this post will send you a reminder to check back on this sub so you can ask a question when the thread is live.
hello, fellow actors! after a few months of unemployment, i was hired for a remote copywriting position at a nonprofit. i really like the gig, and am wondering how viable it is to stay at a steady remote job while in the early stage of my acting career (i'm 23 and have been signed with management for 1 year) i have 4 weeks of PTO. how have others managed to make acting work with regular jobs? i'm tentatively anxious about being without income and benefits should i start booking (lmao) and wondering how others manage that aspect of the business
Hello Hello! I [17f] will be playing Lady Macbeth at my community theatre. (For the record most of the cast is between 25 and 45 years old, so this isn’t a teen adaptation. Just raw Shakespeare in all his glory) I am playing the Lady from the perspective that she was crazy from the start of the show. Being alone all the time in a cold dark fortress drove her off the deep end and the desperation to be around people motivates her to manipulate macbeth. My director wants to see two sides of crazy. She wants the delusional believes they are right and perfect as well as the psychotic freak out for when she sleepwalks. I was hoping the veteran actors here could give me some tips on behaviors to help bring that intention out. I’ve never played anything but young men before so this is new territory for me. Thanks in advance for your help!
Did lots of acting in middle and high school but stopped because of reasons. Now I want to get back into it. Definitely rusty but where would I start? Community college class is an option. like intro to acting. I am looking for more acting in dramatic stuff. Like stuff that makes you cry kinda stuff. Movies or whatever. I'm a tall Asian if that matters and I can sort of sing. Any tips for someone in my situation?
Where I live (Canada), actors need to be part of a union, which is tough to get in, to get access to certain auditions. Is it the case in the States?
I don’t watch anime but my friend does, and I notice did research on IMDB that dubs use mostly different actors than western animation and games (Even if they are recorded in LA studios), what is the reason why we don’t see voice actors like Billy West, or Tara Strong doing anime series? Some people say “They’re not interested”, or “Busy”, but I feel like it’s saving face.
Hi folks! I've never posted here, but I've had something that's been nagging at me for a few months and I wondered if anyone else has encountered this/has advice! Several months ago, in an audition that was going really well, the CD asked me "How many years have you lived in NY," which I instantly recognized as a sneaky attempt to figure out my age. Though I realized that's what this was, I couldn't think of a good work around on the spot, and answered honestly; at which point the CD's face visibly fell. I spoke with another actor friend who auditioned with this CD years ago, and got the same question, and also wasn't sure how to handle it. It seems like this person knows they can't ask people's ages outright, and so has made this a habit to ask. So: any thoughts? Would you lie or obfuscate? If so, how? Have you experienced this?
Every actor has their list of whys. Why we pursue this amazing but extremely difficult career. I made a whole list, but I realized I haven't been reading it lately, so I decided to post it both for review and to share my reasons. Feel free to post your whys too! I love hearing other people's motivations. My whys: * I love portraying characters and experiencing different personalities. * I love telling stories and playing pretend * I love getting paid to express myself when anywhere other than a set or a stage I could be stared at and judged. * I love collaborating with other artists, not just actors, but filmmakers as well * I want to be a strong representation for women (especially older women when i get older; as the average lifespan gets longer, there will be more older folks who want to see themselves on screen, and I would love to help contribute to that, especially since the characters for women over 40 nowadays are very complex, and there are more opportunities than ever for women over 40 with each passing year; I'm not close to over 40 years old but this is my dream to contribute to these roles when I reach over 40) * I love getting to live tons of lives that aren't actually mine, and I love to get to experience events that might never happen in real life (sci-fi or fantasy for example) These are honestly just a few main points. If these aren't good reasons to get into acting, then I don't know what is, so I hope I'm doing the right thing. I love acting, despite the rejection, and I feel I couldn't live without it Also I hope this list inspires some of you out there in case any of you are feeling discouraged or haven't booked lately.
Not sure if right thread, but in movies where there are sex scenes, do the actors and actresses ever perform actual intercourse (just obviously isn't fully shown in the show or movie)? Or are there some policies against that or idk how does all of that work? I can only imagine how awkward that would be with a bunch of people in the background, but I guess no different than porn if it's two consenting adults.
I’ve had a lot of my family breathing down my back about starting to do TikTok after seeing some of my friends get like 110K followers doing extremely cringe impressions and mimicries of famous celebrities. The entire app comes across as very vain and annoying to me, but I’ve also only just started drama school after studying something else for 2 years in college, and I’m at the total beginning of my acting journey (trying to gain experience to build a show reel, finding good photographers for headshots, actually trying to learn a proper technique and break all my beginner acting habits, purchasing self tape equipment and apply on backstage and stuff, etc). There’s gotta be another way to market yourself and build credibility in a sea of thousands of actors. All the main stuff I see are create a website and put your acting work and auditions on YouTube, but I have so many friends who rarely get views.
Hi guys! Last year I took the leap and started taking on camera acting classes, got some nice headshots, and made an actors access. As of now I don’t have a reel, would it be okay to upload self tapes instead onto AA instead? How has this worked out for everyone that started off with this?
I’m currently in pre-production for a low budget film, as director and producer. There’s a small philosophical difference for my film. Comedy. Other producers want to have a two mid-level TV talents (very likely not stars, but familiar to some) to have most or all of the starring roles (4) with fingers crossed. The roles in the budget are well below the typical daily amount for SAG actors for TV/film in fact. It’s not even half this amount. I’m more inclined to use local talent or undiscovered talent in the starring roles, but shoot for a few “as big as we can stars, like a film star/reality TV show/well-known social media influencer” in minor or cameo roles. Was explained that this would be more difficult. Even, I believe it could fetch a better deal with much bigger names, even small roles or mere cameos. I’d feel better with this approach, especially if a star has some interests.
Warning to all actors for the new year... another CD wasting actors' time and money. Jamie didn't even bother to review the scene before we met and charged incredible amounts of money for nothing. Please don't fall for it as I did.
Hello! I’m just got started with pursuing acting and over the weekend I was applying for roles I thought I was fit for on Actors Access. I know that a lot of people recommend looking through AA, Backstage, etc for beginner actors. A couple of minutes ago I got an Ecocast Audition for one of the roles on AA and I got super excited! The only thing I’m unsure about is if just casting directors can make an AA posting or if it can be anyone. Before I audition I wanted to ask for help to know that I’m not going into a scam or anything dangerous. I really value my safety so it would be great to get help/advice from experienced actors! Thank you for your help :)
We are working on a project that requires approximately 10000 short stories, and want to hire approximately 4 voice actors to each read a part of them. We looked at some of the hiring websites but they mostly do individual story tellings and the prices are a bit too much if we want to do 10000 of them. Is there a place (or maybe this subreddit) that we can test out and hire full time voice actors for for example a month or two? And also what is the usual rate for full time? Thanks for the help!
Hi everyone, So I've just graduated after studying acting for three years at a film school. 2023 is my first year out in the world as an actor, and I'm gonna be honest, I'm terrified. I don't have an agent yet or a clue about what I'm going to do this year and everyone is hounding me for answers. Whenever I sit back and think about it, it stresses me to the point of tears. I guess I just want some guidance or just to know I'm not the only person out there feeling this way.
I’ve seen some people mention they have an agent for background work but it usually seems they’re in Canada or out in California, or they have an agent that gets them work here in NY and out in LA Is this a common thing and do people in NYC have agents for background work? I’m a SAG member and can see the agent listing page but idk if they’re all for principal acting only. I’m just trying to get my usual consistency of 2 or 3 days of work a week back but at a union rate so I’m down for any advice
I have been told to project many times but I don’t know how. I need help before my first performance.
I was just wondering how do you all market yourself on your social media platforms?
Hi everyone and thanks in advance for your input. I'm an actor who is new to NYC (have worked a lot in film & tv in other markets and have done some theatre training in NYC before). How do you go about finding auditions for plays? I'm non-equity at the moment. I'm talking black box, off off broadway, small theatres, etc. Of course I'd audition for bigger theatres/shows too if that is an option for someone in my situation. Just wondering where you find these auditions and if there is a secret underground rabbit hole that I need a password to get in.
Hello! My name is Sarah. I am 16 years old. My ultimate dream is to become a voice actress, it's what I truly want to do in the future. I'm in plenty of projects (which I am SO grateful for btw!!), but none of them are professional, most are volunteer. I am ALWAYS trying to improve my work. I really desperately want to do this. I dream all the time about voice acting for cartoons, animes, and video games. Do you guys think I have a shot? How can I improve? How can I get into the professional field?? I also sometimes fear that I am inconsistent with my skill level. Help pls! I'm always worried I won't get there tbh Latest Work: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bI\_f5eDBnAI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bI_f5eDBnAI) All Work: [https://msha.ke/moshimacaroon/#top-picks-1](https://msha.ke/moshimacaroon/#top-picks-1)
So, when I was on the set of a TV show last summer/ into Fall 6 times as a background actress (yay they asked me to come back that many times lol), one of the cameramen stopped me one time and asked if I was BG. I said yes, then he handed me his business card and said we should have a photoshoot sometime causw he does photography on the side. We've texted on and off since August and finally set the date for this Friday. Should I be concerned at all about this? I don't think he has bad intentions at all, and each time we've met he just smiles and says hey during each shoot for the show. Just for context of the situation, I'm 21 years old, and my dad wants me to take my sis just in case anything happens. I think it'll be fine, but I think my dad is just a bit worried cause the guy just asked me randomly as a younger woman, but I think he was looking at other BG as well to pass his card to. I'm really excited
Hi people, I'm from Mexico (F/34). My family and I we are now in the path to emigrate to Toronto to start a new life there, but I definitely decided to start a new career like an actress. ( I sent applications at two different colleges). I graduate from college in 2012 of Chemistry and I'm currently working in that field. The big "BUT" is that I've never wanted to study chemistry at all, I really struggled my entire college life because I didn't felt that it was my passion. Since I was 9yo to 32yo, I was in dancing classes (Mexican folklore dancing); I was an amateur broadcaster and I created a dance summer camp for kids back in 2007, all of that just for hobby. The chemistry path has been good for my but it's not what I want. I just realized that making money it's not enough to making me happy. I don't want just to make money and feel that I doesn't matter, that I'm just a number in this life. Since 2022, I started acting classes, drawing classes, voice over and singing classes just to confirm that it really was my passion and I can confirm that IT IS. I had the blessing to worked for a big editorial company were I have had to create a lot of voice over acting in different roles and I LOVE IT AND THEY PAY ME FOR THAT!! I still can't believe it. (If this was just in the beginning, what can I do next?) Recently, I went to singing classes with the great James Demster and played at the city's museum and also IT WAS GREAT!!! I was sold out!!! Just to finish, I'm scared to start a new life in a foreign country but, I feel confident enough that I can make art anywhere, anytime, I don't know why, I just feel like mandalorian said: "this is the way". For the first time in my life, IT FEELS CORRECT
Hello reddit, I would have a brief question. Are there any (preferably holiday) acting workshops or competitions for teen actors, located in the UK? I would love to network with other teen actors (maybe even directors) and broaden my horizons. Something like the YoungArts competition in the US, but on UK level? And maybe available for people without UK-citizenship too? Thank you for your answers, I would greatly appreciate links and tips :)
So i’m a teenage actor from india but my age deosnt even have a proper film or music industry there isn’t any proper pay for anything here and i’ve always wanted to act professionally. So i did find these international casting sites like backstage, actors access, fame street. But all of these have a monthly payment, so i wouldn’t be able to afford all of them but i can get the membership for one . which should i get, if u have any experience, considering my circumstances what would be the right choice ?
I'm in the beginning stages of developing my first demo reel, and I want to try to make it competitive as possible. To that end, I want to get a feel for the best ones out there. -- I've given a listen to some of the Voice Actors I'm pretty well familiar with, but I suspect a lot of the VAs I'm familiar with haven't had to update their demo reels in a long time _because_ they're already pretty famous and have been for a while. Here's my favorite so far, it's [Matthew Mercer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wztQP6ZOrg) -- and case-in-point, it's from *2014*. But I won't be competing in 2014, I'm going to be competing in 2023 and beyond. So I was hoping we could all share with each other the best demo reels we've heard? Send me some demos that will give me third-degree imposter syndrome please, and thank you!
I've seen that lots of voice actors used it, but upon searching it up, Google just says that audio interfaces "convert microphone and instrument signals into a format your computer and software recognize", which doesn't make sense to me as you can just record with a microphone normally? Does it make the audio sound better or something?
[I posted here](https://www.reddit.com/r/acting/comments/zz448v/idea_collaborationbased_subreddit_for/) a few days ago about a new idea I had for a subreddit. The reactions I got were positive, so now I've created it! I've outlined the idea for the sub in the earlier post, but the gist of it is that writers post short scripts of scenes, and actors act the scenes out from the scripts. If this idea sounds interesting to you, please consider coming on over and giving the sub a visit - since it's just begun, any traction it gains now will be extremely important to its future growth, and I'd really appreciate it. In case you missed it, the subreddit's name is r/ActMyScene. Let's hope this is the start of something beautiful!
I am not an actor, but when I watch movies, I have the impression that actors bring in more energy than an average person in daily life. Also it seems to me that gestures and facials expressions are slightly exaggerated compared to average Joe. Additionally accentuation seems a lil bit more that I would do in normal life. Maybe 10% more than regularly. Is that on purpose? do you think that actors have that same attitude off-screen, too?
So my situation is a bit difficult I am 18 years old I’m kinda all by myself my dream of becoming an actor isn’t supported by my family and I’m not exactly bringing in money as to where I can pay a lot for classes I wanted just find a way to progress in something I’m really passionate about but I’m just kinda lost right now can anyone help?
Hi everyone I'm bruna a 21 yro from Switzerland. I am applying for Film university, so I'm currently filming a short film. I found most actors except the parents role where they are always arguing .... since it's taken place in the past it's mainly voice.... I was wondering since it's mostly audio if I could find a couple that would like to play that role for me ? It's a no budget film I also won't gain any money from it and I currently don't work... if I did I would be willing to credit but at the moment I can't financially sustain that.... If anyone however wants to help and also wants to film it themselves taking place in their house I would be very thankful The parents are black in the story or atleast one is black since my main actress is black and I wrote the character to have biological parents.... However I would be very very grateful if anyone could help me with voice acting... (If you are interested DM me and Ill gladly send the script)
I'm looking into moving to NYC and was wondering if there is a specific area/neighborhood/part of the city that a lot of up-and-coming actors tend to live in. I like to be surrounded by people with similar interests and goals. Any suggestions?
I got a response from Talent Link on actors access and they said they’re ready to bring me on board and send over paperwork.. I’m a bit leery of paperwork and this kind of immediacy. Thoughts?
I produce some very small indie productions. Some are union projects, others are non-union. Every time I put out a casting call here in LA, I get hundreds of union (SAG-AFTRA) actors submitting for the parts even thought the casting calls are very clearly for non-union projects. I know that they are not allowed to do non-union work due to Global Rule One. I've been disregarding any submissions that I know are from full union members (ie, not just SAG-Eligible). Should I be considering them? They're the ones who would get in trouble if they were caught so you can argue that it's their risk to take, but it just seems wrong to someone knowing it could come back to bite them. I'd like to hear an actor's perspective. To be honest, I'm probably not going to change my mind on this, but I'd still like to hear if you think I'm in the right or in the wrong here.
For the past half a year I've been producing a full cast Audio Drama for a novel of mine. I've gotten several actors from this sub and once again, I need your help for the last few minor characters. I'll post pay rates next to the characters but they are negotiable if it takes more time than we thought. (Adult Black Male) Rogue Agent Ken/Shaka Zulu - Time traveler who abandons his mission and becomes Shaka Zulu. $25 for about 3-4 paragraphs worth of lines. (Adult White female) Lauren - Trashy trailer park girl who helps the main character survive his first week on his adventure. $20, roughly 2 paragraphs worth of dialogue. Someone who can sound like Jaime Pressly would be great! (South African Female Accent) Annika - This character is a small role but makes a huge impression towards the end of the story. She's a female street fighter that won the mens division in her home country and is no competing in a major tournament. $40, maybe 3-5 paragraphs total. (Older White Male) Aging Nazi - Minor character. $10. Old, washed up nazi that coaches an Ubermensch martial artist. Roughly 4-5 lines of dialog. (Early 20s Male) Dungeon Master - Nerdy guy that grew up playing tabletop games and harnesses the power to manipulate your perception of reality. $10, 2 paragraphs. (Middle Aged woman) Book Store Clerk - Owner of a creepy bookstore that bends reality. $10, only 3-4 lines of dialog. (Adult Male) Pissed Off Ex-Boyfriend - Exactly how it sounds. Guy brings his friends to jump the main character for taking his girlfriend. $10, 2-3 lines. (Mid 20s Female) Angie - Girl who thinks she can get whatever she wants for her looks. Learns a valuable lesson when she gets rejected. $10. 2-3 paragraphs.
Weeee, you found me!
I'm your buddy Bottie, I was hiding behind the scenes, but now that you've found me I'd be happy to tell you what I'm doing.
I just wrote a few fun facts about Web For Actors
