Can Stand-In work help you get to principal work, or does it make it harder?

Posted on Dec 7th

I have a buddy who does a ton of stand-in work, gets SAG health insurance as a result, makes a ton of money, and is genuinely happy because he gets to be on set every day. meanwhile, i've been waiting tables for years and i want to blow my brains out and I cry myself to sleep every night. My manager told me that doing background and stand-in work is not good, and that you will not book principal work on that show because the directors / producers all see you as a stand in. but then I've seen on IMDB that some people do background / stand in work, maybe on the same show for years and years and finally are thrown a bone in the form of a co-star or something, sometimes even bigger. what is the truth here? i cannot wait tables anymore and be surrounded by dumb ass people and nasty, nasty degrading restaurant managers. it'd be one thing if it were "all actors & artists waiting tables" but in my experience, with how fucked up the economy / world / corporate oppression is these days, it's not, it's all unambitious working class people waiting tables as their full time "career", and i'm the one that stands out because it's NOT my "career", it's a shitty terrible part time job I do to literally just get by and specifically for flexibility, and most of these restaurants aren't even flexible anymore because the managers are such disgusting people so used to desperate people looking for a job that they want full time slaves that have open availability, i mean it's just disgusting.

Abusive Meisner Class - Is This Normal?

Abusive Meisner Class - Is This Normal?

Posted on Dec 7th

Back when I was doing music and my best friend was training to be an actor, she took a Meisner class. I had never heard of it before. She had a rough time in this class - from what she described, she was being verbally abused in these classes as part of the exercises. Men in the class said very overtly misogynistic stuff and this was just part of the class? She was supposed to react to it or something - I don't recall the exact nature of the exercise and I don't want to exhume that by asking her. I was disgusted and have continued to be disgusted by it since then. I think her experience in that class is part of why she quit. I'm jumping back into acting this year and deciding on acting schools to attend. I'm in Chicago so there are lots. I'm reading about Meisner and it seems like a technique that would work well for me but I'm petrified of going to a class now. Was my friend's experience the exception or the rule?

Hello, I’m a teen, with zero acting experience (other than being in drama class) and I live in Europe, too. I really need to try new stuff though, and I’d really like to be able to act in some kind of way. I know it’s unrealistic to expect to be a background character in some netflix series, but i’m wondering if investing in backstage makes any sense at all for me.

A24 Pilot Role of Jayden

A24 Pilot Role of Jayden

Posted on Dec 7th

Not sure if people remember the A24 open call from a while back. The role of Jayden in the open call was looking for East Asians specifically. Today they released the cast and an actress called Annie Marie Elliot was cast as Jayden. She’s gorgeous and I’m sure a wonderful actress but ngl she looks vaguely Asian but straight up white in some photos…….feels like a disingenuous attempt at diversity and representation. Sorry for the rant. Just wanted to see if I’m insane for feeling this way?

GF isn't supportive of my passion to be actor

GF isn't supportive of my passion to be actor

Posted on Dec 7th

Hey everyone. I've been dating my gf of nearly 2 years and we're extremely serious. We've discussed about the future: marriage, kids, and our passions and ambitions for life. She has much much more on her list and I'm still extremely supportive of them all, but when it comes to my deep passion of becoming an Indian actor, she's not very much so :( We both love and care for one another very deeply and connect on a level that we haven't with anyone else we've come across. We're the same age, but she's currently in grad school and I'm a little behind due to taking a few gap years but am planning to attend grad school as well. Her main issue is: a) she really misses me a lot on a daily basis and will do so if I'm away for work (we've been long distance since the start), and b) she believes our kids in the future will need me around at all times. My main responsibility as a man is to provide for my family, so I know deep in my heart that I will not even pursue acting unless I've comfortably provided for the family with a substantial amount of savings, and I've ran this very fact through with her. She's still not very thrilled with the idea. I want to make a name for not just myself, but for our family as well. I've asked her how traveling for acting would be different than traveling for work if I was a contractor. Unfortunately she called acting just a "passion" and doesn't consider it as work. She thinks I'm being selfish :( My family will always be my number one priority, but I also want to do something I can look back on 50 years from now and be extremely proud of and die without any regrets. I love her so much, but I can't help feeling stuck. Could anyone advise me on how to talk this out with her? Thank you so much.

is it worth attempting a carrer as an actor in 2023?

is it worth attempting a carrer as an actor in 2023?

Posted on Dec 7th

I feel like it's a career path that has a very high failure rate. I think it is more about you knowing the right people and building a "network" than being actually good at acting. Being able to make a living from acting can take years and years of carrier building and still be risky. I have seen many actors from my childhood now ending up doing no movies, some even having very successful TV shows and yet, they are kind of out of the business. I think acting is one of the few career paths where some luck is a must, in order to be successful. I want to be an actor but there are so many insecurities for me.

Pilot Season Without an Agent: My Worst Fear

Pilot Season Without an Agent: My Worst Fear

Posted on Dec 7th

**tl;dr I'm not sure I'll be able to get an agent in time for pilot season and need to figure out what to do if I don't - are there casting sites that take submissions for pilot roles, co-stars and guest-stars from unsigned actors?** Just moved to LA three weeks ago after wanting to be in a bigger market for the last six years (the wait was for a variety of different reasons at different time ranging from savings to other work in the field to relationships to an entire pandemic). I've updated my reel, started working surivial gigs just enough to make my budget, submitted on Backstage and Actor's Access like crazy, signed up to audit some classes, and even landed a couple small projects with film students (not quite what I'm trying to make most of the next year be, but I'm incredibly thankful that I can say I'm getting work of any kind). I took the time to draft and get feedback on a cover letter to send to agencies, and I've submitted to 18 in the last week. Made a spreadsheet today to see what "level" the different agencies and their clients are on to see which ones will be in the middle ground of not so prestigious that they won't even look at me but with enough of an establishment that I'd feel really good about signing with them (solely to prioritize where I send my material first - even with my experience I'm a new arrival to the city itself so I'm taking the reality check to realize I'll be grateful for a boutique agency signing me). I'm confident in the steps I'm taking, but time is of the essence and my biggest adversary here - if I'm understanding correctly, once all the agencies close for the holidays, it's onto pilot season and all their energy will go to submitting the clients they have rather than picking up new ones. I feel like I'm in the middle of a window of opportunity, but that it's closing fast. I'm sure it's going to take some time for them to even get through my submissions (6-8 weeks is the quote I'm seeing - eek), so I want to plan for the worst-case scenario where I don't have representation come January. Making the most of finally moving out here is imperative to me, but I'm still trying to figure out: how do I navigate pilot season without representation? I still need to look into casting sites that aren't Backstage and Actor's Access (LA Casting and CastingNetworks are the ones that I've heard mentioned most), but do any of them allow submissions for guest stars and co-stars for unsigned actors? Even if the answer is no, I'm sure I can use the time to network and bolster my training, but I want to make sure I have every single tool available to me. If anyone has further insight as to navigating this, I'll be super grateful. Hope everyone has a great day!

Should I move forward with this stand-in actress role I've been chosen for?

Posted on Dec 7th

Hi! I'm just starting out in my film acting career. My friend sent me a listing for a new movie being directed by an actor I really admire. The qualifications were for the stand-in of the main female actress, and I fit each of the physical requirements. Seeing as I've applied for multiple student films over the past few weeks - and haven't heard anything back - I figured it was good practice just to apply and get my name out there. Well, they emailed me back tonight, and I'm one of the top four choices. The only issue is that it lasts for an entire month, in a few states away from me, and I'd have to pay for my own accommodations. The pay would balance out what I lose at my primary job. Here are what I can think of as pros: \- Industry and set experience; incredible working set knowledge \- Networking and connections \- Resume building Cons: \- Would need to leave my new full time job for an entire month, which I am excelling at \- Would lose a slight bit of money (the pros outweigh this one for me) So, is this worth it? Again, the stand-in would be for the primary actress, and the actor who's directing the film is a big, big name. This would be my first working film job. Thanks so much for any feedback and advice, I really do appreciate it!

Are Closing Credits classes worth it for a beginner VA? Where would be a good place to start?

Are Closing Credits classes actually worth it for a beginner voice actress looking to get into acting more? I haven't taken any formal classes for voice acting in the past, and I was wondering if Closing Credits would be a good place to start, or if there are some other classes out there that are more worth my time (and money). I have technically done unpaid voice work in the past, but I still consider myself a beginner because I have only featured my voice in relatively small projects like Gacha voice-acted content and fandubs. I want to branch out more and seek out more roles, and I want to receive some sort of formal training/lessons before I do so.

Hello! I'm creating a VO Reel and I could use some additional variety. Any VO actors willing to send me raw, unedited files? Happy to credit you for your work, and I never need to use the audio in any professional or commercial capacity. This is specifically for video game dialogue so short phrases from an assortment of characters would be ideal. If ur not able to provide, maybe yall could point me in the direction of some websites where i can get unedited, unprocessed, samples. Thanks for your help in advance.

Looking for four voice actors for an animation! $30 to $50 depending on the character

Hey all, I am looking for four voice actors for an animation I am making. It's a story based one that focuses on fight sequences, but the dialogue will also play a crucial role. The characters range from late 20s to early 40s, and my rates go from $30 to $50 USD for a whole character, depending on which one you pick. I can do either PayPal or Venmo, and payment will come to you very shortly after I approve the final lines. There is a lot more information within the Google doc below and the Casting Call Club link put in it. My contact info is in there too if you would like to ask me something. Looking forward to working with you! [Link to the document](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zFia6ZiHPfqMrOUZM57RzSsNyASTfc417Zb6kMAieWA/edit?usp=sharing)

Looking for an angry middle-aged female voice actress

Posted on Dec 6th

I am looking for a middle-aged voice actress. The character is Nadine, co-owner of a fish pet shop who runs it with her husband. She supports the sale of it as it’s only lost money for years. However, she cannot be there for the actual signing because she is at her father’s funeral. She left Jeff in charge of the sale and now he’s panicking and claiming he doesn’t want to sell. Therefore she is very angry during both calls. It's live-action but, again, all over the phone. The first call is loud angry and the second one is furious but in a church so she's whisper-screaming. Already shot so I can send the rough scenes for timing as well as the script. $30 for 250 words

Hi. I am just an ignorant person here who knows nothing about acting careers and related matters, and the help of anyone here would be appreciated. This person doesn't want to be famous or any of that sort. They only want to know how they can be a part time actor for fun and as a side job (regardless of the income) in any type of domains (local theaters, parody-acting, movies etc...). Like one does, I went on google first. All I get is a long list of ads and websites that want you to pay them to learn acting skills and all the other acting stuff. Also, apparently LinkedIn doesn't post acting jobs haha

Throwaway for obvious reasons. Hey r/acting- I’ve felt a bit stuck in my career lately and I don’t really know who to go to for help/if there’s anything I can do. I’m stuck in this liminal space- I have great reps, several great network guest star credits, supporting roles on indie and major films, and I audition with regular frequency. I know I’m lucky- and I know a lot of people would kill to be where I’m at, in this stage of my career. But- I’ve hit a wall. The past year has been a bunch of lateral moves and not a lot of vertical growth. I was really hoping to book a recurring guest or a series this year- and I tested for a series regular at one point- but nothing has come of it. It’s been a lot of almosts, a lot of being the 2nd or 3rd choice, a lot of pins, producers sessions, but nothing that would give me that break. My reps are happy with my tapes- and I’m doing what I can. I go to class, take specific courses that may help with my weak spots, and am constantly trying to improve. But it seems like no matter what I do, the roles I tape for go to already established actors, actors who have prior connections with the team, or nepo babies (don’t even get me started on the last one). Everyone I speak to says I’m at a stage where it’s simply just a matter of time before something falls through- waiting for the right part to come along- but it doesn’t feel that way right now. It all feels very hopeless. Anyway, was wondering if you had any advice- maybe things I can do to stop myself from going stir crazy, perhaps ideas on how to network etc. If you’re stuck in a similar place let’s chat!

Hi,pursuing actor here, have done a few local 3 month programs with different local teachers and have been thinking of taking it to the next level and I’ve been thinking of moving to the states/London (probably states) in order to enroll in a larger program to deepen my skills and improve everything I know (and also to work in English) so a little bit about me I’m 22 and as I said I’ve done a few local courses I’ve been to some auditions and have worked with a few local directors I can say I’m into both film and theatre but I’m leaning towards programs that works on films. I’m aware most big programs are probably 3-4 years so I could recommendations on where spending my time will be most efficient List of school names I’ve been getting recommendations on are Stella Adler Lee Strasberg RADA Julliard Tisch If any of you know and could tell me a bit about the pros and the cons in these schools and obviously can list more names that will be super appreciated! Also I’m gonna be an international student if that’s something I need to mention. Appreciate all the help thanks! :) If any need further information I haven’t listed just let me know

I’m strongly considering moving to Atlanta to further my career and would love to know other Atlanta actors experiences! I have an upcoming meeting with a pretty good atl agent but I’m worried about limiting myself to smaller roles like only day player and co-stars when production will usually fly in leads and large recurring roles from LA and NYC. Is that still true or is that changing? Also looking for any other Atlanta tips like casting directors to pay attention to and showcases to attend or ways to get on CD’s radar/ways to meet them? Thank you!!

I do not work in casting, however through some of the work I do in entertainment, I see a lot of auditions, a lot of performers, and have the opportunity to see different people do the same commercial/monologue/scene over and over. One thing that should be obvious to a lot of us, but often isn't, is how often people make THE SAME CHOICES, because they are anticipating what someone else wants to see, instead of finding a way to naturally connect with their material and express how they would really feel, or what they would show. For example, a commercial talks about baseball and someone acts out a swing, or lists things off, and they count and show with their hands, guys how often do you see that in an actual commercial? TRUST YOURSELF THAT YOU ARE MORE THAN ENOUGH ALREADY AS AN ACTOR!! If you can get in touch with yourself in your work, you'll find a really unique way to express your material, and you won't need to do cheesy act outs or hand gestures that people sometimes do, because they think they need to "stand out". By nature, a lot of us fall into the trap of being people pleasers and do and say what we think people want to hear, when the reality is, an agent or casting director or whoever is seeing your work, is PLEASED when they see your unique take on it! That's it guys! When you are preparing your script for an audition, but ESPECIALLY a commercial, do your best to avoid doing what you THINK the casting director, or whomever you are auditioning for, WANTS to see. Instead, always find a way to CONNECT naturally with your work and show YOUR unique point of view. I could go much more in depth for how you should prepare, or how you should approach your work, but we all have different ways of relating and connecting, so I really want to just remind everyone, especially those of you who are maybe getting callbacks but aren't booking work, DON'T FALL INTO THE TRAP OF TRYING TO DO THE OBVIOUS, DON'T DO WHAT YOU THINK THEY WANT TO SEE, AND REMEMBER THAT YOUR UNIQUE POINT OF VIEW ON LIFE IS MORE THAN ENOUGH TO CARRY YOUR PERFORMANCE. And if you don't have a perspective or point of view on your material, find a way to relate or develop it. Please, try and dig deep into your soul and find a way in your own life where you can connect to what is happening in your scene, monologue, commercial, voice over read. And use that to inform yourself. That is all, love ya'll!!

Why don’t places such as Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Netflix or Disney compensate their voice actors as much as Fox does?

Posted on Dec 6th

Fox pays voice actors for it’s shows so well that some of them don’t need to rely on other shows anymore, like Milhouse’s voice actress stopped voice acting for anything else besides the Simpsons after her pay raise (with a few exceptions), even Mika Kunis gets paid 175k-200k per episode of Family Guy and she only voices Meg (And a background or cutaway character here and there), so that begs the question, why don’t other companies pay their voice actors this much? Like I heard Tony Sampson (voice of Eddy from Ed Edd n Eddy) went to work on an oil rig since the agency or something wouldn’t give him a raise.

Gum shields for whistling S?

Gum shields for whistling S?

Posted on Dec 5th

Hi everyone, hope you're well. I recently began trying to make Youtube videos with a very talented actor coming in to serve as the narrator. We'd worked together before but on extremely short social spots and also on live-action projects but films that were mostly silent. For this reason, I hadn't noticed any sort of issue with her voice but heading into the booth to try and record an informational video about animals highlighted an issue... For the first time, I'm handing her an extremely 'Esss' heavy script: 236 species...Majestic...Elusive...Subscribe... etc. etc. so the consistent, harsh whistling her mouth creates when she reads 'Ess' sounds became extremely apparent. Unfortunately, it ruined the recording and there was nothing I could do to sort it out. Deessing just didn't work. The actor in question has had an amazing agent (the kind who puts people on TV) for a very long time but doesn't seem to have booked anything career-defining despite being amazing. I wondered if casting directors were noticing this on her self-tapes. It occurred to me that maybe she hadn't noticed this about herself. I thought it was the right thing to tell her because she's a seriously talented actor: an amazing voice, and on-screen, she can convey perfect physicality without much direction, it's actually quite insane how good she is. After I had the conversation with her about this, I was right, she hadn't noticed this about her voice. However, I didn't realise this goes beyond sibilance, it's technically a speech impediment and that information made me think maybe I'd raised something a lot more serious that could have a lasting impact on her sense of confidence and going in for projects. A friend (who is an experienced recordist) posed me "could a gum shield do something to help?" because apparently, the whistling is caused by the edges of your teeth married with the position of your tongue. It's the hard edge of your teeth that creates the sound very much like a tunnel. I figured if that could help, maybe she could at least keep coming in to do voice work for me and others while she works with a coach. I came across these crappy Amazon gum shields for sleeping where everyone on the reviews is saying "they're terrible, too thin to make a real impact, blah blah blah" and my girlfriend instantly said "too thin? So would that stop the whistling effect by dampening the hard edge whilst not muffling her speech in the way a thick shield would?" I was just wondering if anyone has any thoughts or solutions... Have any of you struggled with this? Did you discover a dynamite tip that fixes the whistling? Has anyone undergone vocal coaching to nurse this specific issue, and did it work? Is it generally short or long trying to train the impediment out with the help of a coach? Or has anyone maybe actually tried out gum shields in an attempt to get rid of this or at least dampen it to a point where it's editable? Thanks for reading, I appreciate it.

Hello fellow voiceover enthusiasts! I hope youre all doing well this holiday season. I just wanted to see if I could get any last minute feedback on some of my demo reels before I launch my website this month ([https://damienfurtado.com/](https://damienfurtado.com/) \- just started, so still a work in progress!) and start looking for work online. Here is my nearly complete commercial demo reel: [https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tuJuBA5wDOqJ-eEi3AnK-xzo\_xn6JEL0/view?usp=share\_link](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tuJuBA5wDOqJ-eEi3AnK-xzo_xn6JEL0/view?usp=share_link) I'd really appreciate any criticism or feedback you might have! my main concerns: * does the Volvik clip at the end feel out of place? it was from a tv commercial I did for them while doing voice work abroad and was one of the few pieces of work i did that i was able to locate online. it wasnt produced in my current home studio, like the other clips were. does it seem out of place or odd sounding compared to the rest of the clips that i recorded at home? ive asked several ppl and have received conflicting opinions. * is the music too loud? another sound engineer friend of mine said i should do away with the music entirely, but for a commercial reel i feel its needed. thoughts? * do VO's in N. America put their name at the beginning and end of their reels? ive heard some do and some dont. when i was working abroad, most do. This is my first time producing this stuff myself so thanks for your assistance! Some background: I was a professional VO for 6+ years while living in South Korea and things worked a bit differently there than they do here in Canada (no unions, for example). I worked exclusively at professional studios for big clients (samsung, netmarble, LG, hyundai, KIA, etc.), through multiple different casting agencies and production companies, so i was never required to record my own demos or do any audio production at home. My demos were all put together by the various agencies i worked with at their in-house studios. I must say, its kind of embarrassing to be a professional VO with thousands of in-studio hours under my belt and not have any experience producing my own work at home...but im working on remedying that! thanks again for any constructive criticism you may have. Damien

Hey guys, Just wanted to recommend an audiobook I'm listening to at the moment. "The Actors Life: A Survival Guide" by Jenna Fischer. Actually Kurt Yue recommended it in one of his YouTube Videos, so I'm sure this has come up on the thread before, but I'm really enjoying it and wanted to share it with anyone who might not have heard of it. It's very relateable, and it's got great advice for people whether they're starting out or already in the middle of their career.

NY or LA (I know I know, you’re tired of hearing it)

NY or LA (I know I know, you’re tired of hearing it)

I’m 32 and at a new point in my life where I don’t have any roots really tying me down. While I went to NYU film school I’ve never really been an actor. I spent this year doing local theatre on Long Island where I live (currently in my parents place after ending a long relationship but have the means to leave) and I’m ready to kick it up a notch. I always thought film/tv was my only goal but theatre has certainly grown on me. I currently have a hybrid job in NYC but I believe they would allow me to be fully remote. I would pursue acting off hours not as a career. Just gaining experience for now. Obviously I would love to do it full time. So, do an easy short move to the NYC area and try out for everything under the sun? Or take the big big jump and go to LA because I may never have so little holding me back? I have some friends and some family here in NY, nothing so crazy I can’t leave, but it’s worth noting that I have no one in LA. My best friend lives in San Fran but that ain’t exactly close. Appreciate any thoughts at this massive crossroads.

I want to become an actor but im scared that I won't amount to anything

I want to become an actor but im scared that I won't amount to anything

Posted on Dec 5th

This is going to be a long post so bear with me. I 17M am currently in high school with no job(about to get a part time job). i also have no acting experience. Im not the best looking, at least i think so ive never been called ugly or anything to my face but when I compare myself to netflix stars or just general people in movies I consider myself not as good looking. I've been looking over hundreds of reddit posts about acting and how hard the industry is and wondering if I should try it. as I'm in high-school and have a lot of spare time would it be useful to just get an agent, some decent headshots and see if get hired for anything. I just finished this new netflix show that came out and am very interested in becoming an actor, this has happened before where I will finish a very good movie or show then become obsessed with becoming an actor. Normally my passion will fizzle out from reading the hundreds of reddit posts telling me i have very little chance of becoming famous or even making a living out of it. If you're initial question is why do I want to be an actor then honestly my opinion changes, sometimes it's because I want to see myself on a TV even if its as an extra and have a cool moment where I say "Hey that's me" other times I see decently famous stars with their millions of followers and gigantic fanbase and i envy them. I think I'm inspired by how an actor can go from 40 thousand followers to millions just by getting a lucky casting call (Hunter Doohan). Just reading this makes me hopeful. The problem is I live in a very small town in scotland and there's not much acting classes or agencies near me. And i dont know if the closest ones are good or just money grabbers. I also don't have a big social media following and don't know how to make a big following. I know I probably sound like I'm a narcacist who thinks getting famous is an easy thing but I know how hard it is and thats what is crippling my passion for becoming an actor. I want to become an actor but I'm scared that if I fully commit I would need to become famous to fully satisfy my need or else I'd feel like i wasted my life. Im going to put my disadvantages and advantages. My advantages •love movies and have watched hundreds upon hundreds •always had a great imagination •love escaping myself and pretending im someone else or a different person •I'm tall (6ft 1) •athletic •willing to put in extreme amount of work and grind until I make it (at least I think so) •willing to go to the gym to become in better shape (I've heard a strong jawline is very helpful) •normally don't care if people laugh at me or find me embarrassing, as long as I'm happy with what I'm doing •ready to learn and adapt the different environments My disadvantages •not conventially attractive •small amount of acne on cheek, currently on medicine for it and is proving effective. •I live in a small town •my family are not rich so it would be hard to move to a different country or town •quite skinny(68kg at 17) i fit the lanky white guy stereotype. •scared that I won't amount to anything so it will be a waste of time. •accent is quite British I am also worried about my reaction to rejection, I've heard a lot of the acting industry is about handling rejection which will define your career. I don't know if I'd be able to handle being rejected after being invited for an audition and a call-back. *Question 2* is there a good way to test how you handle lots of rejection? I've seen people with careers that there biggest role will be a short 2 minute appearance in a marvel movie. (That does sound quite cool) but honestly i would need a biggish role in a television series or a movie to feel content with my acting career. Sometimes I'll have a moment where I'll face reality and know that I'll never be a famous actor which makes me depressed. *Question 3* to become a famous actor is it imperative that I live in the USA or a big city like London. My final question is, to become successful do I need to put in immense incredible will breaking work and crawl my way to fame. Or even if i put a lot of work in there's a chance I still won't make it. If you've made it this far you're either wanting to help me or about to destroy me in the replies about how crazy my expectations are. But thanks for reading anyway, all help is appreciated.

As an aspiring actor, I love to watch passionate and emotional performances to learn and to be captivated by it. My sister loves NCIS and watches it all the time. She pointed out that “Doc Brown” was on the show. I was going back to my room and then there’s a scene when he’s reminiscing about Pearl Harbor and his emotions and dialogue were absolutely incredible to me. Just thought I’d share!

Industry trends / changes for 2023?

Any general thoughts on where the industry will go in 2023? For example I know Seattle, WA just passed a local film commission to fund more projects, which means there will likely be an increase in paid casting calls for the area. Are there any other industry news or trends for 2023 that actors should pay attention to?

Have you ever been told you were bad / sucked at voice acting? And how did that affect your pursuit of the craft?

Have you ever been told you were bad / sucked at voice acting? And how did that affect your pursuit of the craft?

My acting has been laughed and yawned at and my singing has been demeaned by people with them telling me I can’t do it and need to find something else to pursue and it makes me think these creative pursuits are truly only for people who have the natural aptitude for it. I feel like having to take classes and still not being good enough means I probably just don’t have what it takes.. and it hurts cause I love the Acting aspect of voice acting and singing. Being able to express yourself intricately through your intentions when delivering a line… but it feels like if you don’t have some type of base level talent… then .. it’s just not possible to succeed What are your thoughts on this? Any examples of voice actors who were told they were bad but still made it?

Audible Originals / Audiodramas

Hi all voice actors, I’m fortunate to have been cast in an Audible Original, my first voice acting project ever. I come from a theatre background and would appreciate some pointers on how I can translate my “choices” for the mic and what to expect. Should I come prepared with a few different versions of a line or just come prepared to collaborate and work?

ACTRA > SAG question...

ACTRA > SAG question...

Posted on Dec 4th

Ok, I'm in a bit of a unique situation (I think) and curious if anyone has knowledge about this... So I am in ACTRA (Canadian union). I was eligible to apply to ACTRA when I got my first union credit, but didn't because I was so new and didn't know what I was doing. Time passed and I couldn't use that credit towards union entrance. Fast forward, I get another union credit. Then I got a union stand-in job. Production wanted me to be union, so they made up a "dummy actor contract" - basically a loophole to make me an ACTRA apprentice so I could work on the show. With my 2nd union credit and this dummy actor contract "credit", I was made an apprentice. Recently, I booked a union commerical, which made me a full member of ACTRA. The problem: I'm living in the States, with the goal of becoming SAG. If you're ACTRA, you can become SAG, as the unions have an agreement. However. On the SAG site, it says that they research your credits/union history and that if they see you obtained your union status elsewhere through any loopholes, you will be banned from SAG. I believe I did obtain my union status through a loophole, despite actually having the required amount of union credits... Has anyone ever dealt with this? Or have any advice? Thought I'd check here before calling up SAG. TLDR: I want to transfer my ACTRA union status into a SAG membership, but nervous that the way I got into ACTRA will have me banned.

Do you have to be a “triple threat” to have a chance/make it as a film actor?

Do you have to be a “triple threat” to have a chance/make it as a film actor?

Posted on Dec 4th

Currently I am involved in the community theater and it’s classes, and I’m always hearing my teacher talk about how the only way you’ll be successful is if you are a “triple threat”. This includes the ability to act, along with singing and dancing. My goal is to focus more on TV/film, but right now I am doing theater to hone acting skills. Do casting directors care the amount of extra talents you have, or do they care about how much you can act? Both? Just wondering in case I need to also learn how to sing and dance better.

After finishing on the festival circuit, I've just released my latest short film, 'A Matter of Trust', online: [https://youtu.be/TNer5VoLBmc](https://youtu.be/TNer5VoLBmc) Although I'm doing unpaid work in a number of plays, shorts and features I'm proud of, I really wanted to take control of my career so made a new short film on a topic important to me. This is my fourth short film, but the first one which really captures my style and explores asexual identity and stereotypes. I'd love to answer people's questions, particularly if they relate to directing yourself or wearing multiple hats to take your acting to the next level.

Looking for VA's for Open Source Project - Minecolonies

Looking for VA's for Open Source Project - Minecolonies

Posted on Dec 3rd

Hi everyone, We are a Patreon financed Open Source Project that is looking for some Voice Actors to voice some of our Citizens. Minecolonies is a Mod for Minecraft that adds a CityBuilding/RealTimeStrategy Game component to Minecraft. In this context, we have a series of Non-Player Entities we call "Citizens". We have a set of different Jobs for Citizens: Builders, Miners, Couriers, Foresters, Cooks, Etc. The idea is to create a set of 8 different voice profiles. 4 male and 4 female. Each voiced by a different VA, each VA voicing all workers. Due to this, there is only a small set of worker-specific lines and most lines are worker-agnostic. I created a preliminary set of lines you can check out here: [https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1BX2yHpVVmeY6\_yoyiTOX0r-zgfphdYnKFnR77n6Yo1s/edit?usp=sharing](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1BX2yHpVVmeY6_yoyiTOX0r-zgfphdYnKFnR77n6Yo1s/edit?usp=sharing) Website Link: [https://minecolonies.com/](http://minecolonies.com/) Discord Link to Contact me: [https://discord.minecolonies.com/](https://discord.minecolonies.com/) (Raycoms1101) As for compensation, we were thinking of giving each VA 50$ for their participation and add them to the list of contributors on github+website. As we're fully donation funded we, unfortunately, can't pay competitive market rates. If you're interested please contact me here on Reddit or directly on our discord (preferred). If you have any questions I can answer them right here in this thread. TL;DR: Voicing a set of lines for a popular open-source Minecraft mod. Target language English, variable Accents, Dialects, and Personality types.
