Is it possible for your throat to feel swollen from voicing a VN?

Is it possible for your throat to feel swollen from voicing a VN?

Posted on Dec 1st

I am not a voice actor, I just like to audibly give voices to characters in Visual Novels whenever I play them. And recently, for the past month I have been playing a VN called Katawa Shoujo, where most of the characters are girls whom I assume to have high pitched voice. And so as an 18M, I tried to imitate the voice of a high pitched girl to keep being immersed in it. But as of lately, I noticed that my throat is a little tight for comfort. Not too tight to restrict my airflow completely, but just enough for me to feel that something's wrong. I'm not coughing, nor do I have a flu, it's just the swelling that's there. Is there some correlation to this and my continuous attempt to imitate a high pitched girl? Do you voice actors experience something similar? I realize that you folks probably would have experienced something like this, which is why I'm asking this sub. If for any reason you think that this is the wrong sub, could you please tell me what sub should I ask this question to? Thanks!

How Casting for Film and Television Actually Works, Yes Nepotism is a problem.

How Casting for Film and Television Actually Works, Yes Nepotism is a problem.

Posted on Dec 1st

How casting actually works generally. This is from a very reputable person who worked for a top cd, huge offices (oscar award-winning films, Emmy-winning shows) The talent pool from which these CDs pull is a million times smaller than you think. Large roles (leads) are arranged in studio packaging. If those on the studio list decline then it goes to lower-rank actors to audition for but that is very rare. Few people turn down work in this town. The breakdowns go out for other smaller supporting roles. Agents submit clients. The Casting Assistant sifts through submissions from agents, only those the CDs have relationships with. Maybe they will watch 15 - 20 tapes per role, sometimes less than 5. Most CD offices have the same favorite agents/managers. The pool of actors in serious consideration in total is less than 100 for every project. Occasionally they will watch tapes from other actors but that is very rare. When they do it is usually for a specific requirement (ethnic background, disability, special skill, etc.). Mostly it’s a request from a top agent about a new client (almost always a nepotism kid). Top agents sign nepotism kids and send self-tapes to top CDs to view regularly for consideration of projects. Top agents don't care about skill. Acting is incredibly subjective. They care about making money and it's easier to make money off someone who is already connected. Now TV is more open to a wider pool of actors, because of the need for variety in episodes and show longevity but exclusivity in the talent pool is nearly identical for series regular and recurring roles. Who reps you makes a world of difference. Thousands of tapes are sent but less than 1% are watched and priority is given to reps the office has relationships with. This is why being with a top agency changes the game completely for an actor. This person left casting because of the inequity of it all. Only nepotism kids and wealthy/well connected people seemed to get repped exclusively by these top agencies. Almost every lead role went to someone who was a product of nepotism. Nearly all of the nepotism hires had little to no training. This is easy to confirm on IMDb. The CDs going on about the importance of training and and caring so much about actors are lying to you. They don't care at all and are incentivized to hire nepotism kids. Some CDs push back & rarely win, studios love the free PR of "so and so's kid is in this film, blah, blah, blah". I'm glad to see the conversation of how problematic this is more in the public now. The odds are not in favor at all of the average actor. There is a completely different standard for nepotism children. If you get anything in this business you are very lucky.

20 year old star of the Fabelmans and potential Oscar nominee, but I can’t help but notice his dad is a successful working actor in Vancouver. They both have the same agent, so I’m willing to bet some money all he had to do to get signed was have his dad call them up. Then, said agent gets him the audition for The Fabelmans and the rest is history. Good for him absolutely, I love Vancouver natives making it big, yet… sigh

clarity when doing longer monologues

This is kind of embarrassing to admit but I tend to gather a lot of saliva in my mouth if I talk for long periods of time. This is even more evident since I tend to articulate my words more than " the typical screen actress". Usually when acting this isn't a problem but recently I've started auditioning for a Shakespeare recreation. My character has a long monologue and towards the end you can hear me losing clarity due to the saliva. Does anyone have any tips on how to improve that? I've tried the old pen in the mouth trick but I haven't seen much improvement.

I want to become an actor but I’m not too confident.

It’s been nearly 3 years that I’ve wanted to become an actor but I’m not too sure about. Before I didn’t think I would want to become and actor because I find acting really awkward. I still find it really awkward and I also have anxiety. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to do it. I’m not doing much right now, I don’t know what to do and I feel lost. I’m thinking about giving acting school a try and when I told one of my family members that I might join an acting school they said you have to be confident and will I be able to perform in front of other people? This just really worried me and I started to doubt myself if I will be able to do it. I also have depression and I have become really unsocial. I feel like I really want to act and become an actor but I don’t belong in that field. I don’t what I’ll be like and what an acting school will be like and if I’ll be able to act. I really don’t know what to do?

Crossboarding

Crossboarding

Posted on Nov 30th

I recently came across the term "crossboarding" in filming TV shows which is where they film scenes in the same location across multiple episodes (correct me if I'm wrong). I've heard this is becoming quite a popular way of filming. Has anyone here ever worked on a TV show that filmed this way? Is it effective? How many pages do you guys finish per day on average? I'm wondering because I'm starting a production company with my friends and every member including me is an actor AND some position behind the camera (for me it's screenwriting) so we're trying to figure out if we were to crossboard for our projects how effective it would be and how much we'd accomplish in a day. Thanks!!

I had an audition with them, although they say their are no upfront fees I have an off feeling about it. I saw a review that was from 5 years ago saying they ended up having to take classes and do expensive photos with them, but the agency responded to the review saying it wasn’t true lol, so no clue what to believe. They say they are a member of actra, but are not on the site. A few of their actors have some good credits but I’m still a little worried. Im very new, so it might just be horror stories. I’ve been doing pretty well booking from self submissions too so I’m scared to sign and get less work!!

I explored LA for a bit and was lucky enough to be accepted into Marjorie Ballentine's master class, and I was pumped to begin, but life brought me back east so I wasn't able to take the class. I'm looking for similar level master classes so I can be around people better than me, actors working at the guest / recurring / series regular level that I can learn from. I don't want to join a mixed level class. Bob Krakower, I'd love to take classes with obviously, but he hasn't accepted new students in quite a while. Vance Barber, one of his disciples, requires you to have studied with Bob first. Eric Reiss, he's been on my list for a long time too but his classes are still over zoom, and I really want to get back to acting in person with 20 people staring at me when I do it. Everything else I can find seems to be mixed-level or still over zoom. David Gideon, Karen Giodano, Anthony Abeson are all on my list as well. What other classes exist that I should research? I'm trained in meisner so I'd like to explore other techniques. I'd love to find a great clowning class, as I've never done that before. Getting into a reputable improv track that could potentially lead to being able to perform regularly on a team is something I'm interested in too, but I'm not seeing much for that these days. What classes changed the game for you / helped your break through to the next level in terms of skill level? Thanks for your help!

Hello reddit I’m a M18 and acting is one of my biggest dreams. I currently am in community college first year in San Francisco. In high school I didn’t do theater .I was to nervous and always afraid I would forget my lines and get bullied, last time I was in a play was elementary school, I was a lead but forgot 1/4 lines. I still remember the line I forgot till this day. In high school I was in Video Production for 3 years(editing/directing class, it was really cool) we made skits and every other Wednesday it will be shown to the school via bulletin if your skit was good enough. A handful of times me and my group would make it in the bulletin and I would be a main character in our skits. I loved it. I’ve always struggled in school just to find out last year I was diagnosed with ADD, anxiety & low self esteem. It all made sense when I was diagnosed, the puzzles connected haha. Now that I’m 18 I really want to get out there and start my acting career. I feel even more motivated because I’m getting alot of compliments of how good I look now, and that I should model(which is another goal of mine but that’s for another subreddit I should talk about. I have backstage and actors access but they always ask me to pay to submit to a role. Which one do I trust? Apparently it’s very important to have a agency representing you as well. Let’s say I want to someday play as a superhero for like DC or marvel, how can I get a chance to audition? I pretty much dm Sarah Finn every week to pray one day she sees my messages. My biggest fear is getting a role I’ve been waiting for just to overthink and forget my lines. Is there any method anyone knows to glue it in my brain(at the right time)is this dream of mine realistic?

Florida Actors: Have you ever dealt with this woman before?

There is a casting office in Tampa with an older lady behind a desk who would check actors in. I think her name is “Kathy?” I remember her being such a vile person. She would talk down to me all the time even though I’d book commercials through the office. I tried so hard to be friendly with her but she would never let it happen. Even when I was leaving and heading to LA, I tried to give her a thoughtful goodbye, which went like this: Me: "Hi, I just wanted to let you know it's been nice meeting you at this office. I'm moving to LA." K: "Moving to LA? Are you SAG YET?" Me: "No not yet." (I am now) K: "Well, good luck then, because you're just gonna be another face in the crowd." I was a bit stunned that someone who also would talk so highly of herself in "the industry" would belittle so harshly other actors...over nothing at all. I ended up booking such amazing roles in my career that I am so thankful for, but I know she wouldn’t care, and would probably find a way to talk him down. The only people I’d see her talk nice to were way overly bubbly actors who I believe were paying for her acting class. Maybe she was a good teacher. I don’t know, can’t say. I’ll just never forget her attitude. The worst I ever came across. Anyone else? If not her feel free to share your own story.

Do I just want to be famous?

Do I just want to be famous?

Sometimes I get very into a TV show and it gets me thinking: Yes, I want to do what they do! But at the same time, when I imagine the life of a professional but not famous actor who has to accept most of the roles he is offered it starts to lose its appeal... I also don't want to do theatre. I feel like if it were truly about the art of acting for me, I would want to it. But I don't. It always seemed rather silly to me. Or is it common to not want to do theatre but TV? I've also noticed that I'm okay with being an average actor. I don't really strive for greatness in my craft. But then again... so many famous actors don't seem all that ambitious about their acting. So many seem to be just okay but not amazing actors. But well maybe they were only in it for the fame too... I've always wanted to be famous but didn't care about acting until I hit my 20s...

Hey guys. I know we all go through this on our acting journey but I’ve been in a hole for the last few months. It seems like I’m sending really good tapes, my agent is impressed with and people I do them with, studio, etc. I just can’t book anything. I’ve been with my agent for over a year, had a few pencils and feedbacks at the beginning but for over 6 months I must’ve taped at least 25 times and I heard nothing…. Nothing… I just don’t know what’s going on. It crashes my confidence. No feedback no nothing. I am ashamed to say I’m an actor when somebody asks me what I do. I just don’t know. Became really confused lately. Not sure if I should be doing it. Yeah I love it and I really want it and I work and invest in it but I don’t know. Like anything… even “hey thanks for your tape it was ok”. I don’t know. I’m really close to just giving up. I don’t really know what I want from this post. Maybe you have an advice or something.

Hey gang, so I'm on the search for a boutique agency in the UK. I currently have a commercial agent and I'm part of a coop agency, this year has been quite a good year in terms of progression and the jobs ive managed to book so im fortunate to be able to take the time throughout December to renew my marketing materials to hit the new year running and send out some emails and apply for representation. One of main goals of my career for 2023 is to find an agency that i can have a proper positive relationship with, who i can talk to about what i can do to improve my casting chances and what jobs to take/turn down if i find them byself (i just finished a job that nearly broke me, it was an aweful production, if i had an agent i feel i could discuss it with maybe i wouldnt have taken it...). Im doing my own research as well but id love to hear from fellow actors what agents they have/have had good experiences with, who feel theyve been treated well and they've got good auditions for TV or Film roles, as this is my preferred chosen area. Thank you so much in advance for anyone who is willing to share this kind of information :)

My Mum has said we should move so I can continue to work, but,,,, really???, No, can somebody give some ideas to make this place work? I will gladly give up work so my Mum is close to the hospital. However, If we can make it work...AMAZING. Thanks in advance everybody...xx

I signed with Evolution Talent Agency about a year ago. This is my first agency, so I’m fairly new to this. Honestly, I’m a bit frustrated because 99% of the time they only send extra roles. The rest is basically up to me to go on actors access and pay them I believe 20 percent for non sag, and 10 percent for sag. The way I got signed was with an audition for them. They made us all read a Sears script, which seemed pretty stupid for film and television to me considering there was no way to really gauge emotional depth from a 3 sentence sears commercial script. Afterwards they signed me, and just threw me a two year contract with no formal meeting or even a brake down of what it means to sign with the agency. Fast forward, I’m kind of at a point where I feel pretty frustrated, because I don’t get what’s the point of being signed by an agency just to submit to extra roles that I could’ve done myself. A brief history and background for myself, I’ve edited for Mr.Beast. Won a Best Visual Effects award for my first film. I somehow impressed the lead sound designer of the Twilight Saga, who actually worked on my first film film. Also went on the Red Carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in France. Before the beast channel I kinda hit a crash and basically built my reel from the ground up. Don’t mean to sound like a glorified douche, just wanna show I’m passionate about things. Just wanted to know from other actors if the whole extras thing and barely any auditions is usual. At this point, I don’t feel like this is an agency I can really advance my career with. And would love feedback on what I may need to do better.

But I really would love to land an agent for the sake of representation. I can't find many reviews of them online besides the few that are on Google and the majority of those are from years ago. I was also trying to check out PCG Talent but again, their Google reviews are from years ago, and it's hard to find out anything else about them. They have a website, however, they don't have a FAQ section nor do they give any information on how to apply or what their process is; just a contact form and that's it. If anyone here is a new/small time actor residing in Columbus, OH, do you mind sharing any info you have on these three talent agencies, please? I just want to hear honest experiences, so anything anyone can share is greatly appreciated. Also, if you are from Columbus and used another talent agency outside of these, please do share!

Is anyone familiar with minimum pay rates for equity actors at a LORT theatre? My daughter has a role on a non-union contract in a show running through the end of the year at a LORT "B" theatre in one of the unnamed cities. The casting calls all listed $1008 per week as the minimum pay, but she took a non-union contract so she gets significantly less. But some of the equity cast has said they don't get paid that much either. We'd like to understand equity pay a little better to see if it makes sense to join before her next role. I feel like SAG has been easier to understand... (she's eligible but she's held off joining while she builds her resume, and non-union actors on a SAG set still get paid well). Does anyone know the ins and outs of AEA?

I've always loved acting since being in a few short films as a kid during summer camp, being in a few theatre productions in elementary, and taking drama class in high school. I haven't formally taken acting classes yet, nor have acted since high school. I am 22, and live in Ottawa, Canada. Ottawa isn't known for being a great place for actors, as compared to Toronto and Vancouver. Yes, there are a few places to take acting lessons, however, there isn't really much. Toronto has great acting classes, and Toronto acting classes tend to be better, and have a better outcome for actors. I currently work a 9-5 job making 70K. I have over 20K saved. While I am currently satisfied with my job, I don't see myself in that career path for the rest of my life. I've always loved Toronto, and always wanted to move there. I've always had a dream to pursue acting professionally, which I haven't started yet. I'd be opening to leaving my job, and pursuing acting full-time, if I am able to money from it. Should I move to Toronto, take classes there, where I have a better chance at landing roles? This would be a higher risk, but the potential reward would be greater. Should I stay in Ottawa, and take weekend/night acting lessons, where there isn't a big acting scene? I would still keep my current job, but I will be harder for me to land roles. I want to start acting, but I don't know if I should stay in Ottawa, or move to Toronto?

However, my voice is kind of a unique tone so it's been hard I was just wondering, are there any voice actors out there with voices that are similar to mine and if so, can you tell me about them? I know this might be a weird request, but I feel like hearing their performances and broadening my understanding of my voice might help me get over this anxiety and I just don't know where to start looking Here's a recording of my voice for reference [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81xLFGhOMMA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81xLFGhOMMA) Anything you can provide me would be appreciated

Can't Even Book a Student Film, Feeling Discouraged

Can't Even Book a Student Film, Feeling Discouraged

Posted on Nov 27th

I just started seriously pursuing acting in January. In an effort to have a best package possible and start off on the best foot so far, I've been taking a steady stream of classes and just got updated headshots from a great/well known photographer in NYC; the training has added some bulk to my resume. The biggest issue is that I can't even book a student film to get credits for my resume, and therefore build a demo reel. I have a couple of self-tape clips for my Backstage and Actor's Access. I've had several auditions from Backstage, and even made it all the way to final call back for a lead in a short film that came down to another actor and myself (losing that one hurt, but we trudge forward!). I also booked a lead for a student film off of Backstage and was invited to film in NYC, but got ghosted so that fell apart. Overall, I'm trying not to get down on myself and keep going, but I just keep thinking that if I can't even land a student film, how can I even stand a chance? Thank you for listening/any words of encouragement or advice!

Casting network worth it?

Casting network worth it?

I have casting network but believe I can submit with the free version. There's a cyber deal at $59.9 shall I get it? I believe there's no way to submit without it or am I missing something? I know there's actors access but I believe we have to pay to submit too? Any cyber monday deals on that one? I'm in miami, florida, non-union. Just want a platform that gives me opportunities.

Slate shot question pretty please :)

Slate shot question pretty please :)

Question ya'll about Slate shots on actors access. I'm trying to find where to put my general slate shot, would that just be under media? and if so, is that a performance video? I had been advised against individual slate shots for each headshot (both arguments make sense to me tbh). Ive been able to book some good work without it, curious to see if there'll be an uptick. Just can't find where to put this thing. Cheers ya'll!!

American Actors in the UK

American Actors in the UK

Hello~ I was just curious to see how fellow American actors are doing in London? I was interested in getting some training there, but wanted to know if some of you stayed in London afterwards. How has your experience been? Has it been difficult to get opportunities (film or theater) as an American?

First attempt at making my own content

Hey yall! I am an actress but have decided to also start making my own content. I am currently working on my first short film. This story will center around mental illness. The story starts when a woman finds a box of letters buried in her garden. Throughout the film you can see her spiral. I used my galaxy s21 ultra camera, ntg2 shotgun mic, ring light, and davinci for editing. I'd love any feedback!

Tips and tricks for networking better

Tips and tricks for networking better

Hello everyone! I hope you are all well. I have a question about networking. I managed to get few days as a background actor in The Crown season 6 and all I want to do is to have fun, learn as much as possible and to expend my network. Do you know any tips on how to give your details to the producers or director without sounding desperate and annoying? How can I maximize my chances of getting noticed by the decision makers and giving my contact details to them and hopefully getting a speaking role in the future? Best wishes, Alex P.S: I am on Spotlight and I don't have an agent right now. I am currently trying to find a new one.

Copying the voice of friends and family

I'm thinking of practicing voice acting to be capable of copying the voices of friends and family. Can you do this as voice actor? If yes, did it come intuitively after practicing voice acting after a while or did you need a mindset/method switch to achieve it?

What have you learned now you wish you knew at the beginning of your career?

What have you learned now you wish you knew at the beginning of your career?

There are two things that come to mind to me, many years trying (with varying success) to make a career in acting that I *wish* someone told me when I left college with my theater degree: 1 - The moment you give yourself a timeline for success you are setting yourself up for disappointment -- acting is a process, a journey that has its crazy share of twists and turns, up and downs. Give yourself some kind of chronological timeline ("I want to have my first TV role by 24" or something like that) hobbles you. (It's so tempting, too--I went to NY before LA and was so frustrated that my contemporaries were all getting TV and Film roles before me, like they were winning some kind of race.) I got this advice from a working actor in a waiting room and it really stuck with me. Your path is your path. If other people you know are working, be happy - that means people are working and there are jobs out there for all of us! 2 - Odds are that what you are feeling emotionally as an actor in the scene is really close, at its core, to what the character is feeling. There was a really great documentary on the making of *Portrait of a Lady* where Barbara Hershey was waiting for her scene to get set up. It was in the middle of the night and it was freezing, and they were making it rain--it was miserable, and all her co-stars and crew were warm, dry and having much better night. She felt lonely and excluded and cold and frustrated...just like her character. Mamet points this out in several of his books and, at my friend reminded me that the Meisner technique echoes this. So, whenever I get frustrated or anxious or confused when dealing with scene, I give into those emotions / pressures and let it inform the performance. That awareness has helped me a lot. Curious and grateful to read what you would share with your previous selves!!

Hello all! My name is Matt Strauser and I came to shamelessly beg for your vote. I am an actor around the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Recently, I was nominated for “Best Supporting Performer” by Dallas Broadway World for a role I played in Plano earlier this year and it would mean to world to me if you could take a second to shoot me a vote. I think the award would be a step in the right direction for my career. To vote, all you need to do in put in your email address and when you’re done, open the confirmation email. The website can be kind of scammy, so if you hit the wrong button and it asks for your credit card info, go back! You don’t need to do all that. When you’re done, please shoot me a DM so I can thank you personally! Thank you! [Vote Here!](https://www.broadwayworld.com/dallas/voteregion.cfm)
