And why do you think it's Tiffany Hadish?
I’m an aspiring actor and I’m wondering if anyone has any tips for ways I can learn when watching other actors, so that watching movies would be a productive and educational activity. What traits and nuances should I look for when watching successful actors?
Like others have stated in these forums, Casting Networks (formerly L.A. Casting, that completely split on its own) underwent a supposed 'overhaul' during 2021 \[I got the update too\] and also raised their rates significantly. They're definitely not Actors Access (which remains the easiest go-to) So, I guess I'm wondering if anyone else has been having spam issues with email casting notifs, like I have. After updating everything in my revised profile, I've gotten legit casting alerts, which I've responded to.... but also spam alerts nowhere a match to my actor profile (Caucasian female): "MALE - 40-50, Black/African-American ...blah blah blah" "Seeking REAL LGBTQ men & women who have tats.... blah blah blah" It's been utterly ridiculous as I'm PAYING for a Pro membership (waiting for my Detroit agent to provide me the free code) that I'm not receiving. So it's become an utter waste of my time. Any thoughts....feedback?
I know CD's have their fav sites to cast but as actors, what is your fav sites and explain. I'll go first. I would like to start by saying that I am non-union and I am not repped. My 2 is Actors Access and All Casting. Actors Access is pretty easy and pretty straightforward. I get a lot of my auditions from them and they are quality auditions. My thing is with AA is that you still have to pay for extra stuff after you get the pro account. I would honestly by happy paying a higher membership fee if we got to add more headshots for free, more slate shots for free and maybe reducing the acting clips pricing. Well maybe not reducing but, let's say you have a 28 second clip, instead of paying the $22 because it's within the minute time frame, pay $11. Also, I would love for them to update the site as a whole. It just looks old but thats a personal reason. All Casting is like a elevated Backstage. It's pretty new too, like 4-5 years. They have this cool rating system to incentivize you the actor/model to fill out your profile completely. It's doesn't effect your chances of booking a gig (or maybe it does and I haven't noticed because my profile is rated professional). They have a lot of video resources and they are constantly making articles about the industry. The site looks nice and fun (in my opinion). They also make you a free comp card! It's not the best looking comp card but it's something if you need it. My thing with AC is that I can tell they SCOUR the internet for castings. I've booked or got in person auditions from them and I asked CD's have they posted the casting on the site and they said no. One said they use the site to find talent but they didn't post their audition on there. I don't think that's a bad thing because some CD's have said they have gotten a lot of great talent from that site that they will be using it now. They do have quite a bit of scam castings (like backstage). They also need to update the inbox. You don't get notified through email or text if someone has sent you a message on the site. I have almost missed some messages from CD's because I didn't get notified. AC is also cheaper than Backstage. I self submit through those 2 sites everyday and I use others but those are my favorites. I would say union actors should just stay away from AC because you can't tell if a project is non-union or union most of the time. For me, I have booked far more projects from All Casting the short time ive had it (less than a year) than ive ever booked from Backstage (on and off for years!). Actually, I never booked anything from Backstage.... Anyways , whats's your favorites and why?
I wish casting sites would require casting directors to leave contact info or have some sort of contacting with the CD for just the gig you are auditioning for because I just got a self tape request from Actors Access and in the instructions they want me to use the sides..... but there are no sides..... Luckily this tape isn't due for a while so maybe they might add the sides in later but this isn't the first time this has happened. Other times the instructions just don't make sense and it would be nice to have a quick chat with the CD. I have seen some CD put their email in the instructions if we have question which is helpful but most don't.
Hey guys, So I'm a fairly experienced actor and i'm trying to take my career to the next level. I'm wondering if anybody here knows of some acting classes that are worth your time and money and also any agents that you can recommend? Any help would be appreciated?
I am looking for voice-over actors who would be interested in doing some voice-over work for an audiobook. This is going to mainly be on a YouTube channel until we get a chance to build it into a book series. I write dark poetry in a storytelling format and I am creating an audiobook series. These stories will require fantasy-based scenery, including images of the main characters going into other dimensions, going to Hell, and other pretty out-there scenarios. This is not a paid gig. I am only interested in working WITH others who want to do this for experience, credit, and fun. Please feel free to send me a PM for more and we will see how it goes. Thank you.
I have read online that you shouldn't use a Hotmail account when you get into acting as Gmail is better. I'm just curious as I am a new actor and use my Hotmail account (its a professinal email)for everything. I do have a Gmail account but I barely use it. Would it make a big deal if I use my Hotmail email instead of a Gmail email. Thank you.
This is a bit of a weird question, but for anyone who has had a recurring role on a tv or limited series, I wanted to ask how often you were on set? I know it's sooo varied depending on the project and role itself, but I'm curious to know how many days you'd typically be on set, how much notice you get ahead of time, etc. Are you able to do other work (either acting or non acting related) in the meantime? Or does your schedule have to be clear for that one project? I know that sometimes even for just a recurring role, actors have to move temporarily to where a project is being filmed, so I'm wondering how that affects everything too.
Hi guys, I'll preface by saying I have no acting experience. Even in high school, I was a theater techie and in the pit orchestra, but never performing on stage. I saw an open casting call online a couple of weeks ago for actors and non-actors for a series lead for a major network TV show and I thought "Why the hell not?" I actually fit the description and I thought the self-tape process would be a fun thing to do with my boyfriend. They asked for a scene to be done in two languages, the non-English one I grew up with, but am not fluent in. They also had an interview, non-professional pictures, and recommended a singing/dancing video. I did the interview and the scene in English. I couldn't do the other language because no one else I know could read the other lines in the scene. I was also too embarrassed to sing/dance to a random song in front of my boyfriend. I submitted my half-done self-tape last Friday right before the deadline. I'm also applying/interviewing for corporate jobs, so I just chalked this up as like submitting my resume and didn't think about it too much. I'm just excited to see the show when it comes out. Last night, while applying to more jobs, I check my inbox and nearly pee my pants: the subject line is "\[my name\] Open Call Callback". They said they would love for me to go back on tape with material from the actual script with the sides attached. It's two scenes. They would also like a video of me singing in English/dancing and singing in the other language, luckily they gave me specific songs. I'm supposed to wear no makeup this time with my hair tied up and submit a full-body video with my side profiles. I have until Monday afternoon at the latest to submit, but I'm hoping to do it by tomorrow or Sunday. Since last night, I've been studying the lines like crazy and practicing my singing. Today, I got a follow-up email asking if I received everything, and replied immediately! I assumed the original was an automated email, I had no idea I was supposed to reply. I'm clearly way out of my element here. I never in a million years thought I'd get called back, especially because I'm so inexperienced. I'm in need of some advice and I'm not even sure what to ask. I read that I should wear the same clothes I did in the original audition. Are there any other pointers/etiquette tips I should know? I'm a ball of anxiety rn, sorry if I'm rambling. EDIT: Also what would the next steps potentially even look like? With COVID, would they want to see me in person? Would they video call me? Everything seems so different now than what my acting friends would tell me.
My friend found out about Agent Blasters months ago and told me about it. I looked into and I was like, "Oh so like Talent Link.". I did Talent Link once and I barely got any response. Anyways, I looked more into Agent Blasters and what pulled me in was analytics. I make youtube videos so I was forced to like analytics in a way lol. I have also seen actors in this reddit group say that they have used Agent Blasters and thats how they got their rep. I would just like to hear from the ppl who have used it. I might use it if I get rejected from this agency that I submitted to this week.
Hi, my beautiful actors! I was curious what anyone has to share regarding a buyout for an ad spot? I just booked my second lil' ad thang, ayyy (humble brag or whatevaaa, lmao). Anyways, I was wondering if a buyout often happens? If so, would the buyout rate be payed some time after the booking rate? Anyone got anything? Muah! We got this y'all <3
Hi actors! Theatre producer here (Equity outdoor Shakespeare). We're gearing for our first post-COVID summer season and about to do our first-ever round of video submissions. Just wondering, from the actors' perspective, what is working best for you all? Our plan is to ask folks to self-tape a pair of contrasting monologues, 3 min total time, and have them send links to YouTube and/or Vimeo links. Does that sound reasonable/doable/easy? The other option is to ask folks to either upload videos to a Google drive (or similar) or just email them. Fewer steps, but perhaps harder due to file size issues. Are actors pretty savvy at this point or do they need advice on how to frame, light, and manage uploads? Any info would be appreciated!
To preface, I am not an actor so I apologize if I’m breaking any rules I’m just not sure where else to ask this question lol. For context I was reading about the director Sam Levinson and the actress Barbie Ferreira, who plays Kat on Euphoria. They allegedly got in a dispute/disagreement about how Kat was developing in the storyline. I guess Barbie didn’t like where he was taking the character. At one point she allegedly stormed off set. Resulting in him basically cutting all of her scenes in season 2, we barely see the character at all. Everyone basically agrees that Sam Levinson is a dick and is completely out of line for doing that. However, I did see one take where someone said that “as an actor you are hired to see out someone else’s vision and it is unprofessional to storm off set or make someone rewrite an entire script/storyline for you”. Basically saying Sam Levinson had no choice. Now like I said I’m not an actor so I don’t know what the etiquette/rules are when it comes to things like this. Another actress on the show, Sydney Sweeny, said she works closely with Levinson to develop her character, so I’m also not really sure how that works. Anyways, to make a long story short, my question is: If an actor doesn’t like the direction a character is going, is it the responsibility of the writers/directors to change the character development? or are actors really there just living out someone else’s vision with no say?
I was asked at a recall to get naked for a short scene in order to see if I was comfortable to do it. The director didn’t warn me that I was going to do it before the recall, however I had a feeling that they were going to ask. The recall occurred at the directors apartment and I was uncomfortable to do it there, in front of the director and their AD. I was sent a rejection email telling me that because “I was unwilling to give everything to the role” and the other actor was willing to strip for it. At least it was insinuated in the email I received. Is this normal practice within the industry?
Hi, I’m a new aspiring actress who’s looking to start to build her portfolio. I’ve done acting before in plays for high school and middle school, and I’m thinking of finding movie sites or places that can get my acting off the ground and onto the big screen but I’m not sure where. I’ve looked at actors access, Backstage and Casting call websites but I’m hesitant to give my money and pay their services since there are mixed reviews. Can someone help me please?
I noticed some Casting Directors want actors to send Two Takes of the self tape to see the Range. I get confused if they are looking for different genre and mood of the character or are they looking for a different character? for example, do i do one as comedy and the other one as drama? or do I make the two different backstory of the character and show them two different version? Plz help.
Hi friends, I'm a transgender person and rape survivor, from Asia and I am planning to seek asylum in NYC or London, I am finishing my studies in youth work but unfortunately I am estranged from family and am considered low SES/poor right now. I am hoping to go to acting school in NYC or London, as I read that it is trans-safe and trans-friendly in these two countries. At the moment I am really stuck as I know I can never afford going to acting school in NYC (It seems impossibly expensive), but I heard that London do not offer any transgender healthcare. And a british trained actress have lots of difficulties acting in the USA too cos of green card and SAG. Another thing that I need to consider is that I am poor and have no family or friends in both these places. I know I shouldn't be comparing countries, but I also want to make sure I can stay alive and not die alone wherever I choose to go due to dangers etc. Can anyone advise me please?
Use this thread to post your headshots for feedback, get info on your age range/type, find good headshot photographers, ask any questions you may have about headshots. If you are posting a DIY headshot for feedback, and not just a snapshot in order to get feedback on your age range/type/etc, it is advised that you do at least some basic research on what actor headshots look like--composition, framing, lighting. You will find a Google Image search for "actor headshots" to be very helpful for this. Non-professional shots are fine for age/typecasting; please keep in mind that one picture is a difficult way to go about this. Video of you moving and speaking would be ideal, but understandably more difficult to post. For what it's worth, the branding workshop at SAG-AFTRA recommends a five-year age range. That's inclusive, so for example 19-23, 25-29, 34-38, etc.
Hi! So I'm a youngish, beginning actor in Toronto. I have quite a few decent, small credits under my belt (small role in a big TV show, supporting role in TV movie, etc.), and I have been with my agent for about 3 years now. I've always really liked them from when we first met, and we get along rather well. However - I've noticed the past year and a half, I've booked one thing, and the last year in particular auditions have been scarce and almost non-existent. I'm watching the people around me in my various classes book major projects, and even though I'm continuously levelling up in my classes and growing as an actor, my auditions haven't changed at all. I have a pros and cons list written down, and I was hoping that someone who has either been in a similar position or has gone through something like this before might be able to help me out as to what I should do for my next move. Pros of sticking with my agent: \- We have a good relationship: they picked me up when I was non-union and I booked my first big gig with them back in 2019 which led me to becoming full union off of one project, I know I can reach out to them with any questions/concerns, we e-mail semi-regularly, etc. \- They have previously fought for me to get inside of the room with casting directors when my credits were too little and no one really wanted to see me \- They are a hard worker Cons: \- Compared to other agencies in Toronto, the one they belong to is rather small and unknown - there are a handful of working actors in there, but most of their clients are like me, who have to work multiple jobs to make ends meet and audition on the side \- I have never met anyone else who knows my agency/has heard of it, unlike the main \~10 agencies that are big in Toronto \- The past year I haven't been getting any auditions at all, and I know that they're out there because all the people I work around have been auditioning/booking like crazy \- My agent is getting older, and even though nothing has been said explicitly, I have suspicion they are on the brink of retirement soon I would love literally any advice as I've been humming and hawing over this for some time. I'm not getting any younger, and it seemed for awhile that I was finally breaking into the industry, and now I feel as if I'm at a standstill again. Even though I love my agent, I recognize I need to be somewhat selfish in this industry in order to achieve the success I need to not work three jobs to survive.
I’m planning on auditioning for the play at my school but don’t know which character to go for. I think in real life i’m most like #8 (whos funny & lighthearted) but I wanted to test my abilities as an actor and go for a more authoritative/serious character like #25 (who’s the captain of the team) What do you guys think?
I was asked to take part in a show a few weeks back, I was given a script and the amateur production was being marketed as being written by a specific author. Since then the script has gone through multiple revisions and was eventually replaced with an original script. Despite this the show is still being marketed as being the licensed show (I can't go into details publicly, but this is a theatre setting where an audience won't really know the difference between who wrote it) - which breaks copyright law + is false advertising. I'm inclined to think the audience won't notice, but the author of the piece could potentially come to the show - at which point this could cause a lot of problems. My concern is though I'm only acting in it, and am not on the directing or producing team - being attached to the show at all could potentially hurt my career when it comes to other auditions - as I am only a small time actor. We've only just started blocking the show and haven't got onto runs yet and nobody is off book. What would you all recommend that I do?
As someone who is very new to the industry, i would love to get to know other colleagues and share experiences and knowledge, aside from this amazing subreddit. Also to share memes :)
G'day, I am some 13year old from Ghent, Belgium and I wanted to be an actor since I was 6years old now I have almost double the confidence and courage so I'm thinking about auditioning for something. My friends will no doubt laugh at me but I don't care! But where and how do I audition? My dad thinks I already have way to much hobbies (divorced parents),so acting classes will be hard but I can try. I'd be trying for a Dutch or French film because my accent is so australian that I failed my English class (true story). *-pathetic pessimistic hopeless 13 year old*
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills
Hi! This is my first time posting to this sub so I’m super excited! I have had “dreams” of acting for a long time. I grew up in a music family and have always been more of a singer, but for a long time I’ve felt called to just try out acting and hope that I can actually make some income from it eventually. I’m fully aware that this is not a guarantee and there are tons of struggling actors out there so I just want to put it out there that I’m not going at this blindly. I live in a pretty good sized town in western North Carolina that has a oft spot for the arts. We have community theater and there are plenty of indie films being made in my area. I just don’t even know where to start? How should I do my headshots? Should I start with community theater just to gain some experience or should I try to book commercials through an agency? I have no clue! I have a very small amount of musical theater experience under my belt from high school but that’s all. I’m a 24 year old woman and I know age can be a factor but I feel like it’s a bit more lenient once it comes to acting rather than modeling (which I have also considered). I genuinely feel like I’ve got what it takes and am a super passionate individual especially once’s it comes to art in general. I’m not trying to be famous or anything but if I can make SOME money I don’t see why not. Please give me your thoughts!
Two weeks ago, I responded to a casting call that had just been published the same week I submitted what they required (nothing specific was required - they just wanted photos, a short bio and a short video). I haven’t heard back yet (hoping to - fingers crossed)! Filming is apparently planned for April which I thought was quite a tight timeline. Is it a common thing to find actors in just 2 months? If they haven’t responded back yet, is it safe to assume I wasn’t picked?
I'm a physically disabled woman in my early 20s who's very interested in becoming an actress. I'm a little shy soft-spoken girl but I hope when I do start acting, I'd love to play likable girl-next-door type roles like Molly Ringwald, Michelle Pfeiffer, Julia Roberts, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lopez, Drew Barrymore, Sandra Bullock, and Selena Gomez. I'm looking for guy friends that also have a passion for acting, in my age range, live in San Antonio, and that have an opposite personality than mine more Jim Carrey-like. Someone that will make me laugh when I'm feeling down and to just hang out, talk and maybe even recreate some scenes from our fav movies and tv shows.
Does anyone else break down the scenes by shots (while discounting the soundtrack), as to how long the director made the actors hold for the many reaction shots... Or is it just me? As an aside, way to go /u/SimuShangChi for making us Canadian actors proud!
Do Yale, NYU, or Julliard students audition for TV/Film roles while still attending school? Or do they wait the 3-4 years until they've graduated to audition for roles? How do students get agents while in school still? Curious to know because I've read some bio's of actors who dropped out of their BFA due to booking work. Is it the same for MFA?
I’m moving to nyc this spring had some inquiries for any actors based out of nyc - what is a good way to find roommates, preferably also in the film industry. (I would also prefer female roommates bc im a woman lol) - is the job market scarce when it comes to acting compared to places like Atlanta and LA? - how much should I have saved before making the move? I have quite a bit saved but I’m not sure if it’s enough lol - what’s your favorite thing about being an actor in New York?
Could someone drop tips on how you comb through a script to find unique possibilities/ choices for your character? Looking for ways to tell a story about who my character is outside of a scene/ spice up my auditions and have more fun. Sidebar: thanks for the constant interactions, upvotes, downvotes, pushback, I love this community if actors we have on Reddit :)
I finally worked up the courage to apply for a role. I’m sure I won’t get it because my profile on actors access is thin at best. But I have it a go!! That’s a win in my book any day.
Hello! I am a young actor currently applying to loads of acting schools in the UK. For one of them. I pretty well known one with a great reputation about their rigorous and awesome training. I was meant to have my zoom audition this morning at 9.30am. I did all my prep work yesterday and this morning. Logged onto the zoom link and waited. After twenty minutes, no one joined the zoom call. So I called up the school and said that I have been in the waiting room for my audition for a while. They reconnected me to someone else who said, oh sorry, the person who was meant to do your audition is sick. You are going to get a new audition date in a few weeks. How come they couldn't let me know once this person called in sick? Why did I have to call them to find this out? After my audition was to take place none the less. I feel like they stole my time and energy. And I am quite angry to be honest. And I am wondering how they handled the other people who were meant to audition today??? Random question, but did anyone here, by chance, also have the same experience today? Is there anything I can do to complain or so? I feel like they owe me my time back (which I know is impossible) or at least a better explanation than, oh this person is sick, sorry for the late notice, or something to make up for this fuck up. Anyway, this is partly to vent and partly to ask for an outsider might think of the situation. Thank you!
i can't seem to find any close to me
I have a huge love for movies and I really want to be an actor and make it into Hollywood, but I'm afraid whether I will get enough roles in movies as I'm South Asian and I feel like Hollywood doesnt give much importance to us other than for the stereotypical roles! Like when was the last time you saw an asian person as the lead character in a movie??
Who are famous actors/actresses (or anyone that is famous in the Hollywood industry) that you knew personally before they made it big? I love hearing stories about how people made it after putting in so much blood, sweat and tears.
Hi everyone! I'm a 17 year old teen from Georgia who has had a passion for acting for many years now. This year, I want to start taking acting classes but there are so many to choose from (Nick Conti's Professional Actor's Studio, Drama Inc, Catapult Acting Studios) And I am feeling quite overwhelmed. Could anyone give me any suggestions? Thank you in advance!
I live abroad and was cast as a supporting role in a movie. We shot a few years ago. There was a well known American sag actor in the movie. I’m American…. if the movie was sag (I’m assuming it is because the actor who is in sag was in it), does this make me in some way eligible to be in the union? Pardon me if it’s a silly question. Thanks!
I am getting tired of auditioning and not booking. Classic actor feelings. I've been writing a short for a little while and think I may wanna produce it within the next year. The only way to go about it without putting up a bunch of money is to do an ACTRA Co-Op. I am curious if anyone here has organized or been apart of an ACTRA Co-Op Production. I have taken a look at a few of the things to get it going, and it doesn't seem too intense. The cost of insurance is the only thing I truly know nothing about. I would love to hear any things to look out for or stories (good and bad) that you have been involved in or heard about.
I had to submit a few tapes for a role last night on Actors Access, and after editing them and everything, I noticed this morning that the names of the files somehow went back to “My Movie #” for each of the 4 tapes. The deadline is past now for the tapes, and I feel like I blew the audition because of the names of the tapes. Is it likely I’ll be passed over because of this? Thanks in advance
The lease for my apartment is up at the end of June, and I would really like to use the opportunity to move to a new city with better acting opportunities and grow my career. My ultimate goal is to move to LA, but I'm trying to be smart about that, and I don't think that would be a wise move this early in my career (I say "early," but it's taken me 9 years of pursuing this to get where I am now). Atlanta seems like a nice sweet spot, even though I know they mostly cast smaller roles there. I asked a reputable Atlanta-based casting director about this a while back, and he said that I'd be wasting my time to head there without an agent first, but I've also heard from actors that it's hard to find an agent there unless you already live there first. I'm really trying to get the ball rolling on this, so any advice would be appreciated.
Okay. I followed a webinar of hers. She has a very sweet attitude and I've been following her for a long time. I thought, let's see what she has to offer. What she has to offer is ripping you of your money, making you look like a not professional actor, and she has a bad reputation in LA. If you're a BRAND NEW ACTOR who knows shit about the industry and find $750 dollars worth it to get basic knowledge - go for it. But you can achieve your acting goals in better ways. I just talked with my coach over this, I was thinking about buying the course but after doing some research, I'm happy I didn't. 1. Learn how to act. Take different acting classes, cold reading, improve, theatre, scene study, on camera, all. 2. Know your type, and make your headshots show each type. 3. You can create a demo real, but acting clips of about 25 seconds are what CDs will look at. Film them professionally. Don't make your slate too long, couple of seconds. 4. Get set experience. Learn how things go on a set. If you behave professionally and are kind, people will remember you. I am NOT a know it all. I just want to prevent others (like me) from almost making the mistake of buying a course that won't benefit them. Google is your friend. And your own healthy brain is. You got this, don't fall for scams. Act. You. Got. This.
I've spent a month preparing to audition for "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" . I showed up to both audition nights, which we were allowed to do. I gave it my all but still managed to botch 1 note in my audition song both times. I am grateful that I get to be involved at all but... instead I just feel... I don't know. I can't name it, but It's an awful feeling. I prayed throughout the audition evening that regardless of the outcome, I would be happy for the other actors. But I'm not. It's awful but I feel a pang of resentment, envy even. Its a horrible feeling. These other guys are really nice people. It's not fair of me to think this way of them. The director said that the understudy cast gets 1 performance out of the 7-9 that we're doing. Is it awful that a part of me kinda hopes the guy playing Leaf (I'm understudying for him) gets sick or isn't able to make it to just a couple performances? It feels awful just thinking about it. I should not be feeling this way. I don't want to feel this way.
Hi everyone I am trying to get an audio drama off the ground I have scripts near ready and want to get started on casting for this but as it is my first project my budget has gone mostly on art and everything else so no real budget for voice actors especially with this being a non profit production, I was wondering does anyone know of sites I can post looking for up and coming voice actors for the project. I am currently looking at casting call and seems to be good but I really want to push this ad much as possible if I can
Acting is something that I'm very passionate about and something I really want to pursue. I'm in high-school right now so I'm focused on my grades so that my parents can support me. So the only thing I can really do is participate in school plays and the next audition isn't till a few months from now. I've been analyzing movies, and I'm starting to read books so I can understand emotion through text better. I read a monologue yesterday for the first time, memorized it, and didn't really know what to do with. How do I ~act~ if you know what I mean. I don't really know how to explain it but after memorizing the lines of a monologue or a script, what do you do next? How do you practice it? How do you make it better? How do you become a better actor? I'm just looking for a bit of guidance.
I have gotten to where I don’t show my spouse any of my audition videos, performance clips, or acting class recordings because he rarely has anything good to say. Worst critic. I know it’s like well you’re getting honest feedback but it’s the kind of feedback that makes me want to give up. I know you can’t do it to please one person and if one person can make you want to quit then you should. I don’t truly mean I’ll quit just in the moment it feels like such a set back. I’m in my late 40s Ive been focused on acting strictly since 2014 but I was studying before then—-started in middle school, high school, college. Recommitted in 2014. I’ve had performances that were in the zone and were incredible but most stuff isn’t like that. I had a showcase recently and wasn’t gonna show him the recording but I did and regret it. I get private messages of feedback from classmates that say the opposite-I mean they say how much my work inspires them and really great things (and I didn’t always hear those things so I thought it was evidence of my training and growth). I never really like fellow actors commenting on each other’s work but the kind of feedback I got in college compared to now is at least some markers of growth. Spouses criticism crushes my spirit and I have to get over it and while yes you have to have thick skin in this business … and I can have a thick skin… for people I don’t live with. I’d rather not show him and have been better when not showing him, but his complaint is that I spend so much time doing it that he should be able to see it. Well but then you never have anything good to say and I am not at all encouraged. I guess the only feedback we should pay attention to is callbacks and bookings?? I regret inviting casting directors to my showcase. I hope none came, but I know at least one did. (It was online) I feel humiliated and sad. It’s been a 1 year program and I thought I made so much progress. I feel sick. I’m not quitting I’m just lamenting. It’s hard to spend your whole life toward this, having had those moments in the zone-You know what’s possible, but then you feel completely set back and question everything. I have a recording of the showcase and think I should probably talk about it with a coach?? Do you have a family member who is your worst critic? Looking for people who understand this and not looking for you to say to quit or get a thick skin - I know, I know. I want to move forward constructively for myself. A CD I invited did send me a message saying great job, I wonder now if that was just being courteous. I know most CDs are too busy to say something they don’t mean but this is a newer CD. Ughhhh
Do I write you a nice note? Do I send you the script? Do I write you a nice note and ask permission to send HIM the script? Is he too busy? Are YOU too busy? Do you get, like, eighty or ninety of these things a day?
I live in Hollywood and recently decided to reconnect with my childhood theater kid dream of being an actor, starting with comedy skits I've written myself for TikTok. Most of my friends have taken some kind of lessons at acting schools, universities, or community colleges. I'm considering [a program from the UCLA Extension](https://www.uclaextension.edu/entertainment/film-tv/course/acting-techniques-fundamentals-theater-x-4075). Has anyone taken any acting classes here or at any university extension program? Which ones would you recommend?
Hi everyone! I am new to this subreddit and am in my second acting class in New Jersey. This class is called "An Actor Prepares" and deals heavily with monologues. I am really struggling with delivering an honest monologue by Chris Smith from the play "Killer Joe". I don't know if anyone is familiar with this play, but it is pretty dark and twisted, something I'd normally be interested in watching/reading. I can easily do a cold reading and recite the lines from memory, and I can also go through the script and determine the "actions" or "action verbs" in each of Chris's lines. However, when it comes to actually delivering the monologue, I get so caught up between remembering action verbs and my lines that I forget about the urgency involved. When I get into the emotion of what's happening, I forget lines and also slow down my pace considerably, thereby reducing the urgency once again. What's going on and why does my brain hurt? Are the action verbs only meant to be there as a mental exercise, and should my main goal be delivering the lines with my objective and urgent need? Any help is appreciated!! P.S. Plays are funny. Sometimes there is just not enough context for me to decipher how lines should be delivered, unlike, say, a novel.
Weeee, you found me!
I'm your buddy Bottie, I was hiding behind the scenes, but now that you've found me I'd be happy to tell you what I'm doing.
